couldn't they offset each block by the thickness of one rod and put rods from each block next ot each other on the a custom crankshaft? Then change the timing of one of the head by 90 degrees. That would allow them to keep the heads and camshaft stock. Why do you think it wasn't done this way? Or am I getting something wrong, geometrically?

You need to index the camshaft on the second block after you turn the crankshaft 90°. One of your cams is totally and completely off. One set of pistons is running and keeping the engine turning over that’s why the other side is blowing flames. You will also probably be way better off running two separate distributors.

Basically each block would be one half a crank case and the adaptor just a flange to allow you to bolt them together around the outside .. put together like a VW.. not bad idea.... It might be easier to do it with a push rod engine because you can flip one block over and then use the same camshaft to drive full of sets of pushrods? Lol 😂

Hey guys. You know, 2 stroke outboard boat engines typically have split caged roller needle bearings in their main and rod bearing locations(at least the older ones that I've worked on). Instead of using ball bearings and subjecting them to the intense heat of welding(which burns the grease out of them and overheats them), you can use the split roller needle bearings from a 2 stroke boat engine and install the bearings in halves after the welding is done.
