RECORDED ON NOVEMBER 22nd, 2019.
Dr. Colin DeYoung is Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Minnesota. In his research in personality psychology, he has examined the theoretical structure of personality and the biological basis of personality.
In this episode, we talk about the Big Five personality traits and their ten aspects. We first go through the ten aspects. We then talk about the personality traits of liberals and conservatives, and gender differences in personality. We discuss the behavioral genetics of personality, the neuroscience of it, and the changes in personality that occur across the lifespan. In the latter part of the conversation, Dr. DeYoung explains his Cybernetic Big Five Theory (CB5T), and a cybernetic theory of psychopathology. We also refer to the difficulties in the classification of mental disorders.

Fantastic discussion. It is always a pleasure to listen to DeYoung. I hope you can invite him again in the future. Would have been interesting to hear more about his work on the two higher-order factors of big five. As I understand it, there is a ongoing debate on whether the higher order factors derived from factor analysis of self-reports are a product of some kind of response bias or if they reflect true higher order traits. It would also be interesting to hear more about Deyoungs view on the HEXACO-model as an alternative to Big Five.

Agreed, I'd really like to hear Colin's thoughts on this in a more informal forum - it is a very interesting topic at the moment. (At least to those who enjoy scrutinising thought the personality literature).

Thanks for the video. Just a aesthetic question, are you able to adjust your guest’s screen so you are both the same size? Ironic question for a personality interview I know.

Does anyone know the meta-analysis about psychotherapy and changes in personality? I would love to read that.

My guess is that those who are neurotic may become moreso if given the chance to verbal ruminate out loud. What do you think?

@@divinegon4671 I’m not sure that’s the case, ruminating (as in free thinking) allows people to express associations related to symptoms, but then it’s needed some direction to make cognitive restructuring or other techniques. I was asking if someone has the link to the paper.
