Celebrate the 50th anniversary of Sound of Music! Academy Award-winning actress and singer Julie Andrews performs "Edelweiss" with André Previn conducting the NHK Symphony Orchestra during an August 1993 concert at NHK Hall in Tokyo, Japan.
The song is named after the edelweiss, a white flower found high in the Alps and popular among Austrians. Rodgers provided a haunting waltz-time melody to the simple lyric that Hammerstein wrote about the appearance of the edelweiss flower. This song turned out to be one of the most beloved songs in the musical, and also one of the best-loved songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein. It was the last song the two wrote together prior to Hammerstein's death.
I mixed the concert footage with HD aerial footage of the Austrian Alps. I thought not only did the smooth visuals of the Austrian Alps blend with the graceful rhythm of "Edelweiss" but, as the unofficial anthem of Austria, it was an ideal backdrop to Andrews' performance.
NHK, Japan's national TV network, broadcast the concert to celebrate the 20th anniversary of NHK Hall, which opened in Shibuya, Tokyo in 1973. It's perhaps the best telecast of a Julie Andrews concert performance ever.

J.A. used to have one of the greatest singing voices of all time...a rich, burnished mezzo soprano with clear diction and considerable volume. And although she retired from singing in the late nineties, her vocal artistry is forever preserved via the many movies, cast albums, film soundtracks and solo albums she has left us. The first time I went to a theater with my family, I was 10 years old. The theater' name was "Teatro Marzano" in Miraflores, Lima - 🇵🇪 Perú. The Musical Play " La Novicia Rebelde", the maun actor: Oswaldo Cattonnr ( from 🇦🇷, owner of the theater and Peruvian citizen) , as Captain Mr Trapp and the 1sr Actress Regina Alcover( Radio Speaker and Mother of Gianmarco Zignano- Peruvian songwriter and singer(my favourite) , as the Novice... among others.. This was amaxing for me. Then, some months after that, I had the opportunity to go to the cinema and watch the Movie with Mrs Julie Andres as 1st Actress. I loved her.. I couldn't help it this brought me into tears and a smile that surely brings joy to to one's soul as I recall fond cherished memoirs of childhood that includes listening to this kind of music so endearing, enchanting indeed!! Who would ever forget this movie THE SOUND OF MUSIC, staring roles of JULIE ANDREWS with her incredible beautiful voice, CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER AND THE 7 young actors as the VON TRAPP children. My siblings and I as babes, toddlers to young children and adults were so lucky to grow up with this music of the classic era of the 60's to the 80's. I wish we can turn back the hands of time or if we have a time machine just in this age of technology I will definitely jump in!!

🇭🇲🦘 Beautiful music. Magnificent orchestra and the magical, unique voice of Julie Andrews. Not only a wonderful singer, but actress too. The song 'EDELWEISS' has a special place in my heart and memories. My late dear grandmother (who reached the age of 103) loved this song very much, and would often ask me to sing it to her (accompanied by my guitar) and I would. She would close her eyes and 'see' the beautiful Austrian countryside, imagining she was there. We both loved the movie the song had come from, but all of the music too. This was something that I could share with a lovely lady (my grandmother) who was born in 1889. Memories of happy times.👋👍

Lukas Previn (son of Andre) related how he was at this concert in Japan. He was 12 or so and he remembers that he was crying "like a little girl." I completely understand that. This was the emotional finale to the concert. Everyone was moved. Julie had distinct tears in her eyes as she came to the final notes.

I wonder if anyone takes notice of the poignant character of the words and music. I can't help thinking about how Captain von Trapp and his family were saying goodbye to the Austria they knew and loved when they sang this song prior to leaving the country. The Edelweiss takes on a symbolic meaning for them as the symbol of the incorruptible part of the Austria they knew. In a way this song fits the situational meaning of their dislocation, and yet gave them strength and courage to move on.

Yes, the edelweiss is symbolic and the family would have felt great sadness about the Nazi terror. I think they would have been overwhelmed by relief at being able to escape the terror. @Kai C, you're missing the point - the film is about freedom and beauty, and the film 'symbolizes freedom throuhg the eidelweiss connection.

La película la novicia rebelde al menos en Chile ,no fui muy conocida para toda la fama que tuvo por las nuevas generaciones de niños y niñas por algo que percibí por la sencilla razon tenía una temática para adulto en todo lo bella y trágica llegó subtitulada tanto los diálogos como las hermosas canciones y eso hizo que no se pudiera ver y disfrutar en familia y eso me pasó y a cuantos más ,a excesion como ejemplo la película ya un clásico Nery Poppin traducida al Español -Latino tanto el el diálogo como las canciones y hay se pudo disfrutar con la familia o simplemente los niños y niñas un pequeño y gran detalle les cuesta leer a los más pequeños.Una observación de mi parte.
