I'm glad you specified "first elected British female MP to take her seat in British House of Commons". Because the first elected female in general in what was then the UK including Ireland was Constance Markievicz who would not take her seat but begin the process of independence for Ireland.

John Ballance PM from 1890-1893 had actually led the charge for the woman's vote, and to put an end to land grabbing from the Maori... He's my father in-laws (Norman Ballance) uncle through John's brother. Ballance was actively involved in the advocacy of women's suffrage, declaring to Parliament that he believed in the "absolute equality of the sexes." This was a cause he had partially inherited from his colleague in the Stout government, Julius Vogel, and in which he was influenced by his politically astute wife. Ballance was also responsible for the establishment, in 1891, of the progressive land taxand progressive income tax. He was widely praised for his handling of the economy, which expanded greatly during his term. [

Incorrect. The first colony where women had the vote was Pitcairn Island, in 1838. The first country was Australia and the first country where women could stand for election was Australia. New Zealand’s claim of first having universal suffrage is false.

@@historypod Plainly incorrect. New Zealand became a nation in 1907. The Kiwis get extraordinarily upset when it’s pointed out that Pitcairn Island was the first colony where women had the franchise and Australia the first country (nation). New Zealand also likes to proclaim a loophole of self-governing, which is plainly not true given that it had a Governor General and British armed forces and had no control over currency or external affairs, in just the same way South Australia where women were voting at the same time as New Zealand was not a country/nation, it was a colony.

The video is talking about the New Zealand suffrage movement winning the right for women to vote in 1893. The video then jumps ahead to the 1919 when the first British member of parliament was elected in Britain. Look up info on Kate Sheppard on wikipedia for more info on the New Zealand women's suffrage movement.
