Just a quick note of thanks for this simple diagram and awesome explanation of the process. I'm in the planning stages of a new tank fresh water setup, and I'm surprised how difficult it is to find basic "Sump 101" information. Looking forward to the remainder of your build videos. Thanks!

Looks great! I don’t know much about dumps but my LFS has prebuilt ones and the design looks pretty similar. Great job!

Awesome build. I have a 100g tank I'm wanting to sump. Your videos answered lots of questions I had. How do you like your sump build? Anything you would have done different? I'm going to use your videos to make my sump setup. Love the drawing 👍👍

I don’t have the sump anymore that was a while back. But I had no issues it worked great.

Make a bracket after the heater baffle to hold the biowheels if you plan on using them, would make a cleaner/simpler setup. I love the dual heaters. Have you thought of wrapping the sump in foam to help efficiency even more? Can’t wait to see what you come up with

On the return, you could tee off the line and run it back to the start of the sump, with a gate value, this way you can dial back the return flow, but not add pressure to the pump

Excellent video! I'm looking forward to the rest of them then building one for my 37. I am planning on just tubing in and out of my tank and skipping a HOB. You may have answered this following question in one of the upcoming videos but in case you didn't, how do you know what GPH should each pump pull to take into account that one is pulling with gravity and the other against?

That's a tough question.

I like your concept none like those science geeks who loves to use words that we regular humans dont use or understand they should also learn to keep it real and simple its called diy because some of us takes better care of. What we create rather than what we brought we brought from an expensive store selling us what we may never use

I run a 55g sump on my 180gallon. If it were me designing your sump I wouldn't use the biowheel. It just makes the design unessesarily complicated.. In a power loss, once your overflows are below the water line the chance of overflowing the sump is mute as the water will always equalise ....I prefer a weaker flow from my pump as this allows the water more time to be in the sump and be in contact with the bio and sponges. I also have a whole section that I use as a riparium ...helps greatly to reduce nitrates and keep water clean....and it looks good.

Agree with M no ned for the bio wheel, get decent bio media and you will be stellar with this design, get the heighs/flow/sump capacity right and there should be no problems
@jdofishtank60187 жыл бұрын
Jakes I don't think you guys are understanding. The bio wheel filter is only being used to disperse the water more evenly, it's no even going to be plugged in, it's only being used as a fill box.

I understand it now since you uploaded your final setup video the other day...which looks pretty sweet I might add. . Don't worry about it, our comments relate to before we understood what you were planning.

Very good. But I donot have so much space for sump. I am planning for 18 x 18 x 18 inch for my 75 gallon tank
@jdofishtank60187 жыл бұрын
Ya....I just realized this 29 gallon won't fit through the cabinet doors on my 75 gal stand, I may have to lower it from the top of the stand, which means removing the 75.
@Subu42197 жыл бұрын
Donot remove the 75 gallon. Use a smaller tank about 15-18 gallon as a sump.

I’m no professional but I do know that when building a sump it’s a good idea to make sure that in case of a power outage it has a siphon break to keep the display tank from draining into the sump and causing it to overflow. So I’m thinking you might have the water level in the sump a bit high according to the drawing since there isn’t much capacity left in the sump once it’s running. Also the overflow shouldn’t stick too far down into the display tank so that if the power does go out it can only drain to that point before it starts sucking air. Which will keep the sump from overflowing. If that makes any sense. Last, if you are going to have the return pump filling the tank in the biowheel obviously that filter needs to be able to drain the water into the tank and not back up and spill water everywhere. In my opinion it’s much safer to drill the back of the tank and let the water drain that way instead of the hang on the back overflow. It basically negates the possibility of the sump overflowing. How’s that for a novel lol. Looks like a bitchin start tho I am anxiously awaiting the finished product. Good luck broski.

I don't want to drill my tank
@allaboutdiy13757 жыл бұрын
JDO Fishtank I totally understand that. I’m always nervous about doing it. But it might prove more reliable if you ever have a problem with your setup. But in the end thousands of people do it just how your doing it and don’t seem to have any problems. You’ll probably have to make some mods to it to get it just right but it’s nothing you can’t handle. Good luck it’s gunna be effing sweet. 👍👍

If you donot want to drill , get a good overflow box as per your pump size , or do a DIY overflow. For return you can simply use a spraybar , that will spread your water.
