My observations after taking a whack at this on a 2001 ML320: The overflow nipple on the upper driver's side of the radiator is easy to break off by accident when working in this corner of the vehicle. You want to let the vehicle cool off overnight before doing the power steering pump, or at least wear gloves, since you'll be very close to the upper radiator hose and exhaust manifold. Make sure you have a new o-ring for the pressure hose. The pump I received didn't come with one, and the old o-ring was squashed and split. You can hold the belt tensioner with a wrench and a tie-down strap wrapped around the frame. I used a torx socket rather than attaching to the outer nut since I didn't want to accidentally loosen the nut. The pressure hose can come in contact with the power steering pump's pulley and get cut open if the hose is at the wrong angle. Replacing the pressure hose is more difficult than it looks due to not having much room to get two hands in to maneuver the rack end of the pressure hose to the correct angle. You'll want to have a set of extra o-rings and a dental pick as well, since every time you fail and pull the hose out of the rack, the threads pull the o-ring off the end of the hose. The two bolts at the rear of the pump are twice as hard to get back on as they are to get off. Removing the wheel, fender plastic, and exhaust manifold heat shield provide better access. If you jack the front wheels off the ground, you can bleed the power steering with the motor off by slowly turning the wheels stop to stop until no more bubbles come up. If you turn the wheel too fast, the reservoir can overflow and make a mess or you can suck bubbles back down into the system. If you clamp a mirror and light in place, you don't need an assistant.

Thank you, straight to the point. All the other videos are 20 min plus! Also I recommend to people to go with BOSCH I have had bad luck with the quality of Amazon parts. Not much room for profit on a $60 pump so they are going to cut corners on quality.

Is this procedure applicable to the ML430 Year 2000 as well? Some screws (and maybe locations) that need to be taken out are definitely different compared to the ML500 from what I can tell.

When I changed the reservoir, I noticed the inlet connector for the reservoir on the pump was able to be spin around and was able to be manipulated in all directions. I was assuming this piece should be tightly sealed and affixed. Is this correct? I think that potentially broken inlet connector is the cause of my continued leak.

To everyone complaining about this video, I think it’s made with the assumption that you have at least a basic knowledge of mechanical work. So they don’t need to go into specifics because all you do is look at your new pump that you undoubtedly already have since you’re replacing your pump?? Look at the holes, this is kindergarten stuff. Or search the MB forums. Geez...

Ordered my new PS pump WITH new reservoir as one defect could have effected the other. Few questions 1. Same methods apply for 2000 ML320? 2. Knowing the new unit comes with pulley do I need to remove old one to access hardware to remove unit? 3. Is it a MUST to use MB fluid or is there a common available product that would be acceptable? Thanks a lot Looking forward to this NOT so fun job 😳😂

Pat Patt that’s insane. The pump is $60 on Amazon for w163 w/ warranty and shipped (Prime). As you can see it’s about a 1 labor hour job, 2 max if you’re taking your time. +new fluid $20-30? $900 is absurd.

Depending on if you take it to a normal garage or the dealer probably anywhere from 1200 to 2300. I'm just guessing different factors can bring the price up or down such as availability of the unit.

Your skipped the two most important steps. First always do a flush before removing the old pump so you dont run the new pump with old fluid. Second, After filling the new pump reservoir with new fluid you need to hand turn the pully to prime the pump so its not dry. Otherwise you damage der new pump right away after starting the engine..
