Not only does 2D allow you to show off your drawing skills and has unlimited possibilities, but it ages much better than 3D.

People are placing too much importance on Miyazaki's recent Oscar win. The movie won because most people think it will be his last opportunity to be in the running as he is getting older and likely will not continue to work on films. He's also not a staunch anti-3D reactionary. He's worked on CG with Studio Ghibli, most notably Boro the Caterpillar and for background elements in his more recent films. Still, the Boy and the Heron doesn't have the audience outreach to change anything in Hollywood. Studios are laying off artists left and right with many looking to further remove the human element and start leaning more heavily on AI. Even so, it's not the visual qualities that are hurting Western animation right now, it's the writing. Nobody seems to have a clear vision for how to proceed in the industry. With heavy hitters like Disney, DreamWorks, Sony, and Illumination leaning hard on franchise recognition and remakes, it's hard for anything original to get a green light out there. And when something does pop up, it's lost in the shuffle of nostalgia and branding. Audiences are just as much to blame. The Boy and the Heron pulled in less than $50 million domestically. Wish was considered a flop at $15 million more than that. Hell, Elemental was considered a flop and it pulled in three times as much at the box office. People are much more likely to go to a domestic CGI film that's bad than a foreign 2D feature that's good, though. The numbers for the Boy and the Heron don't show any major demand for more films like it, so we're not likely to see any studios follow suit. Every new traditionally animated film that pops up we get excited and say "maybe this will be the thing that brings back 2D" but it never does. Until we see a classically animated movie bring in money like Across the Spiderverse, the best we're going to get are small indie releases and low budget movies based on TV series. There's nothing to motivate the major studios to change tactics. Until then, 2D will still have a home in TV and web animation. Budgets are lower and modern tools make it more cost effective than CG in many cases. Overall, this video kind of reads like a high school presentation. There's a lot of superfluous information and some inaccuracies when defining 2D vs 3D animation (like how the industry transitioned away from cel animation in the 1990s and started coloring on computers, traditional ink and paint hasn't been a major part of 2D animation in decades, even at Studio Ghibli). The Flintstones wasn't an adult animation, it was targeting families which was why it aired during a prime time block. Adult animation got it's start in theaters. It's disappointing (I know, I work professionally as a 2D animator), but really don't get your hopes up over this. Nothing short of a massive financial windfall will get the major studios to take notice in the medium, again.

I believe 3D and 2D animation should both coexist both theatrically and on television, no matter the style. I think it’s time to move traditional hand-drawn animation from a series of moving papers to the digital pad, where it can get the proper upgrade. 🤘😎👍

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, a 3D film, is one of the most visually stunning animated films I've ever seen. But so is Princess Mononoke, a 2D film. It would be very sad if we had to live in a world with one but not the other. As someone who grew up with the Disney Renaissance, there's an element of artistry and a sense of earnest wonder that 3D animation still can't replicate; a human connection you can make with a drawing, more so than a 3D model. 3D animation feels like it's grounded in physical space, but in 2D animation, you enter a reality that's just a bit more abstract, more fluid, more dreamlike, even if the story stays fairly grounded. Take the Elephant Graveyard scene from The Lion King, where you have the characters sliding down skeletons and rib cages. That movie has a fairly grounded story, but it can still play with your sense of space and scale to turn the environment into a scary labyrinth. Can three hyenas really fit inside an elephant skull? No. But the film presents it as this big, towering space, and you just accept what you're seeing. 3D films don't do that.

I'm hoping illumination will do 2d animated movies in the future like dreamworks and disney did, unless they would end up bad too

i think it would be amazing to see 2d make a comeback, but does spider verse really count as an example for 3d animation lacking feeling and possibly seeming soulless? the movies makes an attempt to take a different approach on 3d animation to make it stylized and not seem like it lacks the love 2d animation is visibly full of and succeeds in many peoples eyes. it also has many 2d elements such as having many details, large or small, drawn onto the characters 3d models, smear frames rather than motion blur much 3d uses to seem more realistic, or making some scenes appear like watercolor paintings with beautiful colors blending into each other, reflecting how characters feel in the moment and really helps pull off some scenes. those elements really seem like they put love into those movies and had the wonderful look of 2d in mind. (sorry if you didnt really mean to trash on spider verse with it on the cover image next to the boy and the heron, an amazing movie, which both fanbases of those movies have argued over which is better for a while. please tell me if so and ill probably delete this entire thing or smth lel.) but i just felt the need to explain spider verse doesnt really count in comparison to many 3d animated films. also uhh if it makes you feel better, at least 3d films are getting more creative in utilizing 2d elements, with things like puss in boots: the last wish or teenage mutant ninja turtles: mutant mayhem!! :D thanks for reading all this if you have and have a wonderful day. :)

Hi @milezmoralmillieX3 I agree with your Point. But, Please watch the full video. I didn't mean to say that Spider-Verse or any other cartoons are bad. It's just about people's preferences between old and new cartoons and the different feelings and vibes of classic cartoons. Every cartoon has its own uniqueness, but Miyazaki's movie was able to win awards against Spider-Verse. The main purpose of the video is to continue 2D animation along with 3D. Thanks for watching the Video!

@@milezmoralezmillieX3 What made Disney so great back 90's, is that there wasn't much competition outside of Anastasia. Now days there is so much competition that Disney lost the will to take risks. Not helping matters is that Disney has a bad habit of going over budget like Atlantis and Treasure Planet.
