1:55 Don't sell yourself short when it comes to FX not being center stage. I remember many seens in Akira where it was the kick-up of clouds and debris that gave the excitement to the film. A quick cheat that I use to animate cloud rolling is to shift a cloud textured thru a distorted poly-mesh but it's pretty timid as to what you can express. It mostly works well making effects for frothing stew pots.

Wow, I enjoyed your pacing a lot. I'll have to check out other videos of yours. I came trying to find some pointers in doing dust for a stampeding herd of elephants. This helps me.

I'll give you a tip, Character animators do FX all the time. Characters are active, clothes, hair, dangly jewellery are all reactive. FX is mostly reactive. So if you're doing dust it's reacting to the force. If you're animating a flag, it's reacting to the wind. If you start thinking"how would X react to Y, you'll start to see you already know a lot of the stuff. The rest is just paying attention to different materials in the world. :)
