Yes, that's a wedding procession you just saw outside the window. Weddings happen with a lot of aplomb in India and people dance to all kinds of musical instruments on the streets -- often blocking traffic in narrow lanes. Festivals is a big thing in India. Did you also see a horse on which the bridegroom rides to get his bride? You may have. The bridegroom usually rides a horse to get married to the bride. Great adoption story, I loved the vlog and cried with you guys, particularly since I am from Kolkata and a Bengali myself, I somehow felt very connected. That's groom and party going to bride. The gigantic thing that you said is a chariot pulled by real horses. Groom sits on it while all the other relatives dances and proceeds towards bride's home/banquet hall where all the other ceremonies will be held. The lights are held by men and they who moves along with the procession. The boom sound you described is done by fire works/ fire cracker, which marks groom coming to take the bride.

That is a wedding procession an age old tradition of the groom and his family, friends reaching the brides place in celebration for the wedding ceremony and bring her back home with them.

The wedding ceremony you saw is caled barat (ba-ra-t) the groom comes on hoseback to the venue where bride family welcomes the groom and his family... these are usually grand and over the top coz we indian loves royal bling and over the top ceremonies.
