I love how you mentioned the population grew after the freeways were built by 1970, when the population was 26,000; now it's 75,000. I am guessing it became popular to a lot of people from Phoenix, for example, which is now a two hour drive instead of many more hours when you only had US 89 intersecting 66 in Ash Fork which is 50 miles from Flagstaff. Or the mountainous "shortcut" of US 89-A; both of which have since been demoted to state highways.

Old Route 66...Next time in Flagstaff, I'll take that little drive. Williams is another town that has thrived despite being bypassed, but others-especially in New Mexico like Tucumcari-have withered.

It's crazy how the San Francisco Peaks just stand out in an otherwise flat, high-altitude forest. It seems that apart from the occasional transition into another biome, most of Arizona's elevation changes are pretty gradual. Haven't been in the state much, though, so...

Wait until you see the next video as we go from the Verde Valley and up the Mogollon Rim, the elevation changes are very sudden!
