This video features the drive into Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in Colorado, which is the newest national park in the state. There is very limited driving inside the park itself so after we pass the visitor center, the video concludes with some pictures I took during my time in the park in June 2021.

Would be totally awesome place to visit. All the differences. Towering mountains, high grasslands, then big Sand Dunes in the middle of nowhere. Must be thrilling.

This brought back some memories. I was there as a little boy in the early 60s, and loved the place (although it did seem almost unbearably dry and there was little greenery near the campgrounds). Funny story - back then I really liked horses. My parents were very careful and made sure I didn't learn that there were wild horses in the area - they later told me about it (after we'd returned home) because they were afraid I'd take off and try to find the horses. I remember quite clearly climbing the dunes and walking along the ridge, with the wind blowing sand in a layer a few inches above my feet (while on the crest). It's a great place to visit! It's more striking and beautiful now IMO. It used to be that people could drive on the sand portion - a 4 wheel drive was recommended, but I remember us driving to a picnic area on the sands and enjoying lunch. The water we drank from there was a little bitter and hard, but potable.

BTW - one of your pictures brought back another memory - of being on the crest of dunes and looking down - in the low areas there were some greenery and in one or two there was some water (my dad warned us to not try to drink it or even taste it).

Best time to go to the Sand Dunes is in the late Spring (May-June) when Medano Creek is running at the base of the Dunes (bring your bug spray!). By July it's pretty well dried up. I also recommend going to Zapata Falls, which is a few miles south of the park. 😃

Another NP off the beaten path. Nice video, by the way. Mesa Verde is on my "visit" list. Have you ever been through the Petrified Forest NP? Next time you're in AZ on the I-40, take a couple of hours to do so-I highly recommend it.

A very amazing place, been there twice and it's always been pleasant. If you aren't used to the altitude it's gonna tire you out quick but a fun experience to hike and enjoy a peaceful quiet time. First time i went there got to see a couple lightning strikes from afar up in the top mountains.

Have you ever considered a trip east to see the Appalachians? Lots of great videos to be produced there - Blue Ridge Parkway, I-40 over the Smokies, I-68 in Western Maryland.

The cost of traveling has been so expensive the last few years. I have no idea when I’ll head that far east, time will tell when funds become available.

@@InterstateKyle I was going to do a roadtrip across the whole country to see cities on the east coast like Boston, NYC, Philadelphia, DC, etc. However, with the insanely high gas prices due the war in Ukraine, I found that it would be around the same price to just fly out. So I did that, and rented a car to drive between Boston and Atlanta, visiting the aforementioned cities as well as Niagara Falls, the Outer Banks in NC, and then I visited my brother in Columbia, SC before flying back home from Atlanta. It was a great trip, and I spent two weeks on the East Coast (I'd already visited some of the Appalachians previously, so I really wanted to visit some of America's biggest and oldest cities).

Thanks for the tour of Great Sand Dune National park & the photos too. Just wondering, do you use the National park service app? It's an interesting app esp for if you're interested in the National parks.

I don’t use the app I just do my research before I visit and know what I want to see pretty much.
