Sorry guys, this video took me much longer than I expected it to take because the amount of dickery went so deep. It's not as though I previously didn't know about this stuff, but investigating properly... jeez, poor AMD :( Time and time again, it's the same story. I investigate.
0:08 - PhysX
1:16 - Tessellation (Important to understand later examples)
1:45 - Crysis 2's DX11 upgrade
2:31 - Fallout 4's Godrays
2:51 - Witcher 3's Hairworks
3:02 - Nvidia Gameworks Controversy
3:42 - Why hasn't AMD prepared for this? + Nvidia's defence
4:08 - AMD's competing technologies and open sourcery
4:59 - OPENGPU VS Gameworks... but will Nvidia accept?
5:36 - 3D Vision and Gsync
6:36 - Shadowplay XOXOXOX
7:15 - Conclusion
I knew this would happen, but there are a number of recurring responses from people. I'm pleased with this video because it says what I wanted to quickly and without getting off-topic to defend myself. But I'll do it here:
'Nvidia's a company! They're not meant to play nice!!!'
...no, which is why they're DICKS. What they're doing isn't illegal, but it's anti-competitive. It's not about using their own technologies. It's about deliberately making life hard for everybody else, which DOES have a knock-on effect for users of competing products.
'Nvidia is more than half the audience!!!11'
Doesn't change what I said tbh. But if you factor in Intel, who also does graphics, then they are about 50-50.
'AMD HAS RAPTR!!!!'
Yeah I mention this. Raptr's video capture is GVR. It's good, but can't support EVERY application or desktop use, which is very useful for me on a day-to-day basis. It's also only HD, and the limitations in other areas are lower as well. It's not quite good enough.
I would have included links to all of the sources but a quick google search of them works just as well. This video originally started off as a comparison between Nvidia and AMD technologies but naturally evolved into this as I investigated them.
Brought to you by an Nvidia user.

I know I'm very late to the party, but I feel the same way: gonna switch to AMD for my next build. I've been watching videos by AdoredTV about the same topic, really shows how shady Nvidia is. I realize that they are allowed to do as they see fit when it comes to pricing, but with the recent release of their RTX cards their pricing really can't be justified. We as consumers can choose what we buy and who we buy from.

Competition doesn't have to go down like that. They could be competing to beat each others performance and price to performance, rather than competing purely for profits. My idealism knows no bounds. Technically possible though, ya know, if people weren't dicks. I love both Nvidia and AMD as producers of amazing technology, it is truly incredible what they have made. I hate Nvidia as a business.

I'm an indie game dev. When it came time to decide what type of graphics card to focus on while developing my game, I looked around at what people were saying about AMD and NVIDIA, and I chose AMD. My rationale was that NVIDIA was faster, more performant, and had lots of bells and whistles AMD lacked, therefore if I developed for AMD, my game would run well for everyone, but if I developed for NVIDIA, it would only run well for NVIDIA customers, and I wanted the largest playerbase possible.

Actually as Indie game developer his game may look like shit, but also demands tons of resources from your device due to poorly done optimization. Dude, even big triple A companies tend to fuck up on optimization, that is why Indie games are very often 2D games that are much easier to optimize and even if they are poorly optimized, they still will never demand so much from your device as fully 3D title

Wait? Let me get this straight. Nvidia is giving away a free development tool that favors their technology over a competitor? That sounds like a good business plan rather then being a dick. Honestly, what company in their right mind would try to support their competitor or elevate them to the same level? It would be more work for Nvidia to aide a company that wants to put them out of business. This video seems like it's from the perspective that both AMD and Nvidia are non-profits.

+Barnacules Nerdgasm Exactly , Nvidia is SPENDING money. They got right to make exclusive things. But thats not what they are doing. They invented CUDA API, which allows developers to send C code into GPU's. Thats heaven for us. They have used CUDA to develop physic simulations and give it away for free(not open source, but free licencing) thats even better. But AMD refused to implement Cuda on their GPU's, at this point there is nothing Nvidia can do. They already made it so that PhysX can run on CPU for AMD users. This is not something that "happens-by-default" CPU implementation is required for this. And they did it, Borderlands, Metro physx can run on CPU. This clearly shows Nvidias attempts to make PhysX avaible for everyone. Catch is, CPU cant handle PhysX anywhere close to GPU can. I will answer some complete retarded claims. Neon Rouge - GameWorks API runs on DirectX , its not "nvidia specific" code. It does exact same in Nvidia cards as it does on AMD cards. There are very few ways to communicate with GPU's. OpenGL , OpenCL , DirectCompute, DirectX and Cuda. OpenCL , DirectCompute and Cuda are compute languages, you cant make "games" around them, you can use them to make GPU "calculate" things not for rendering things. DirectX and OpenGL are for "rendering" things, turning load of information to frames we can see. Only Cuda is Nvidia exclusive, and thats because Cuda is made by Nvidia and AMD refues to implement Cuda. Why Cuda? Because Cuda is the most powerful of compute apis.

I dont know about the later cards, but on my R9 280X ReLive performs just as good as OBS, wich is horrible with the included encoder. The 960 performed much better in this case, and the 10 series has capture card quality. Most likely Vega will wreck everything in terms of recording, since that is what youtubers do and they have a large audience, wich again makes for great advertising. Hopefully it will also be built on DX12, wich would mean that AMD could easily win the race with the 10/11 series thanks to the fact that they always had much more raw power.

If Nvidia manages to get rid of AMD then there will not longer be competition and Nvidia will be able to charge what ever they want and PC gaming would get super expensive, and then die. Do you only want consoles? because that is what would happen. Also innovation would stop completely because they wouldn't have to compete even remotely.

"AMD have to be more innovative"... "AMD have to be more innovative"... that's what I see a lot in the comment. Do you know AMD leading the development of MANY things? Back during the memory tech from GDDR3 onwards till today's HBM, multi-core CPU I believe AMD plays a part? Consumer 64 bit CPU? Then Mantle that pushes the development of DX12... What else did I miss? (correction required if any is wrong) .... And you guys still thinks AMD is not innovative? I am glad of AMD doing things for a better future, rather than acting like an ass hole just to fill their pocket. It is true, that what they develope been taken by other companies to beat AMD back. AMD need helps. They probably do get helps, now with 3rd party companies helping them in manufacturing their next GPU lineup (instead of throw money building their own fabrication plant), maybe we will see better improvements in their future products.

Nvidia drivers are a pain and lack behind the newest features. Intel's and AMD's drivers are open source and in the kernel, no need to download drivers and updates happen with the kernel.

It kind of sounds like NVIDIA is trying to play the old console wars game, except with PC gaming components. The issue there is, while (apart from Nintendo's bullshit third-party stranglehold in the old-old-olden days) the choice of platform often came down to first-party-published franchises prior to the PS3 and 360 generation, NVIDIA is purely a hardware manufacturer and seeks to manipulate third parties into limiting themselves to making games that only run optimal on their specific hardware--it ceases being about what games you can run on what platform and becomes about deceptively convoluting a single gaming platform. This is bad for PC gaming on the whole. As a relatively new PC gamer myself (rocking an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 card that was graciously donated to me after its former owner upgraded to something in the 950+ range) I'm all too aware that PC gaming comes with a significant barrier to entry even when you have good hardware: the inevitable settings tweaking, double-checking, controller input fiddling, and general complications of not knowing that you're playing a game specifically designed for specific hardware and specific graphical settings. NVIDIA is attempting, essentially, to turn their graphics card line into a PC gaming "console" by nudging developers toward a place where their own cards "simplify" the process while AMD's bring out the worst in the PC gaming *process,* essentially making itself not only the company with a hardware monopoly on popular games but also the one most inviting to console gamers looking to break into the PC gaming market (now that there's not as much divide as there used to be in what games are offered between PC and consoles). The problem there is, PC gaming is still "on the rise" as far as mainstream popularity is concerned, since the PC gaming library has largely merged with the console library over the past decade or so. We aren't dealing with the same market it was back during the 8-bit/16-bit/32-bit days when not just the titles but also the genres on offer were largely different than the ones popularized on consoles. Consoles have adopted old PC mainstays and old console mainstays are freely available on PC gaming platforms now. The gaming market has merged and now thrives on an environment of very limited exclusivity. AMD knows that PC gaming's strength is in sharing and freedom of customizability in combination with good tech--it's why their AMD Gaming Evolved program, powered by Raptr, attempts not only to consolidate the PC gaming experience but also to provide a community hub for console gamers as well. It also works just dandy when you're using NVIDIA's GPUs. I've got an AMD FX-4300 Quad-Core CPU in here alongside my NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 GPU. My experience with this mix has been quite pleasant, but my next upgrade may well be to an AMD GPU if current trends continue. NVIDIA's tactics are greedy ones, but more importantly, they undermine the main draw of PC gaming and throw an artificial smokescreen in front of the entryway for newcomers.

+Silkfox Can't say I'm immersed deep enough in PC gaming community stuff to make any judgment calls about that, but simply being a PC gamer doesn't mean one truly understands the intricacies of PC gaming hardware: it's easy enough to find out what parts to get and how to install them than to learn about what the parts actually do or why this company is limited in this way and another isn't. PC gaming is on the rise, but that also means it isn't the domain of people who know their stuff anymore--the same dilemma that occurs when a previously "niche" franchise or nerd culture market finds mainstream appeal, sort of. In the past, consoles were marketed more towards kids while PC gaming was a more dedicated adult crowd. Console gamers have gotten older and diversified their tastes, but PC gamers have invited a more diverse market in as their library has absorbed much of what used to make the console market unique compared to PC.

It's true - Nvidia makes some amazing hardware and they offer great features. I generally prefer Nvidia cards because they perform to my needs and have functions I want - but goddamnit, their obstructionist attitude to competition and anti-consumer tendencies sour the whole thing... It almost gives me that nasty Apple sort of vibe but in a different way. It is incredibly shitty that genuinely good tech can't realistically be used to it's full extent just because Nvidia would rather nobody have the cookie rather than to have to share it. The last insult in the way of anticonsumerism was the slap in the face that was FORCED registration in order to use geforce experience (and thus shadowplay functionality most importantly). There is NO technical reason whatsoever that you actually should need to register yourself with an online account in order to use the features of that software. In fact, previous versions did all the same things without this requirement - but now it's mandatory to register (and get tracked and mined for data) if you actually want to use core functionality of the hardware you just bought. FUCK THAT. Imagine if you needed to register with Intel to use your CPU properly, register with MSI to get your motherboard functions to work and register with corsair for your mouse and keyboard to have all their buttons working. Un-fucking-acceptable!

Funny how back in old days the before released versions of the gts8800 was supporting physX even before company was bought. Nvidia knows if they work on it they can make old customers just a bit more glad. But no exclusivity to push force users to buy the new lineup and be forced to compete against miners to skyrocket the demand and prices. Also Good job AMD. Didn't had the resources for AI technology to respond to Nvidia. But in 2 years they turned it around yet again with FSR. With universal AI solution that even gave love to old Nvidia cards. While Nvidia is too busy scratching their balls while considering if they should put 3 or 4 zeroes to their new low end entry gpu models for 4000 series. I really really WISH the Apple-like badge fame gloat around Nvidia would end. Esspecially on laptop sector. I know not everyone PCMASTERRACE knowledgeable. Paranoid nonsense. I can't believe people seriously imply that Nvidia goes in and forces developers to tessellate random geometry to make AMD look bad, or cripples their own performance in order to make AMD look marginally worse. Developers are responsible for optimization, not Nvidia, and developers have full control of which Gameworks features they use or don't. It's optional middleware that they can choose not to use entirely. There is no boogey man. The main reason AMD releases everything opensource isn't because they're dogooders that want the best for gamers, it's because they're cloning features that Nvidia made first and AMD is playing catch up. The only way they can compete is by giving some incentive for developers, and opensourcing it is that incentive.
@StandardsFtw
@StandardsFtw 8 жыл бұрын
+Stan V " it's because they're cloning features that Nvidia made first" This is patently untrue. Freesync and tressfx both existed far before G-sync and hairworks did, it's just that nvidia took those ideas, not necessarily "copied", and put more engineers and a bigger budget than AMD into them. That's not a bad thing, but to say AMD is copying Nvidia is factually incorrect.
@Voidward
@Voidward 8 жыл бұрын
Standards The concept for display syncing existed before, nobody implemented it as a real product before Nvidia. AMD didn't have any plans to make this into a real product before they actually had to compete with Nvidia. Hair physics also existed as various tech demos for the longest time. Yes, AMD got it into exactly one game before Nvidia did it. That's a point for them.
@StandardsFtw
@StandardsFtw 8 жыл бұрын
Stan V " The concept for display syncing existed before" Yes, as the open standard of adaptive v-sync. "nobody implemented it as a real product before Nvidia" This is true, that nobody implemented it in an actual marketed *product*, yes, but AMD worked on freesync, which is what spurred Nvidia to create G-Sync. The same thing happened with Shadowplay. NVENC (the driver-level recording) was very much in response to what AMD had done with Raptr. Nvidia does these things because they have a much larger budget and many better engineers.

descent777 From what I remember AMD had a patent for a similar technology from like 8 years ago that was somewhat implemented in eDP which they kind of just sat on. It was mainly for allowing laptops to not need to render frames over and over when idle rather than syncing with the GPU, but the core tech allowed for that capability. To some extent, the way Nvidia implemented Gsync with the FPGA board is possibly a way to circumvent that patent. If that was the case, then that's borderline anti-competitive patent trolling.

7 years later and it still is very relevant with RT and supersampling. Man I remember when Physix was a big thing we talked about in school. I always had ATI and later AMD GPUs, because in my country the price difference was just too big to ignore but these things were hype. In the end most of these computational tasks were replaced by lower quality CPU solution which works for everyone and with Lumen we are approaching the same destination for RT GI. Other thing which is insane is looking at the tests of these old cards being done in 4k. I totally forgot that 1080Ti and 290 were someday considered high Resolution GPUs.

The GTX lineup is not supported due to hardware limitation, i.e. no tensor core while DLSS relies heavily on those for hardware acceleration. I think they could in theory enable DLSS for GTX cards, after all, machine learning can be done on regular cuda cores. But the fps benefit of DLSS would be so low, it'd better just to lower the resolution. At the end of the day, AMD came to the rescue again, with an upscaling implementation that benefits all cards, we'll see how good FSR is.
@RJH755

@@RJH755 Yeah, I doubt Nvidia will let AMD use it (they invest too much into their R&D department just to let it be used by competitor's product). However, Nvidia has been quite charitable when it comes to supporting their old cards. They had never as far as I remember, intentionally gimped their old cards just because. It's just that they innovate fast, which makes old cards seemingly obsolete faster too. On that note, I also think the reason AMD is not a dick, is because they cannot afford to be one. They are definitely at the tail end when it comes to innovation. And that created this balancing dynamic between both of them, where Nvidia keeps innovating, while AMD keeps making things accessible.

The price gap is not as large. Apple ridiculously overpriced for a technically inferior device. Apple is about social status, and have stated as much. nVidia has a bit of that, but it's more due to it's customers rather nVidia pushing that image. They are actually very mum on marketing to players. The cards speak for themselves. Comparatively, top of the line AMD cards are almost just as expensive but not nearly as performing. The middle of the road AMD cards are cheaper, but are proportionately also not as performing. They best is in the low end, where they are actually cheaper for what you get. Remember, as this video showed, AMD cards can't actually perform as well as they seem like they should on paper.

Unless this is what you were trying to say, It's the other way around. AMD has been the one producing great value gpu's. Fair enough, the gtx 1060 is a strong competitor of the rx480, altough again they are a bit greedy with their VRAM, even the rx470 has a 8gb version. Amd cpu's are affordable too, but in no way competitive with intel at the moment. I hope with Zen everything is going to improve, and I believe it will. At the moment there is no strong competitor of the gtx 1070/1080, but the rx 490 is coming + new vega, and in the future navi.

At dx11, wich dominates the gaming market right now, the gtx 1060 is better. I didn't say the gtx 1060 was the better card btw, but that it was a strong competitor. Nvidia has the best high end gpu's, hands down. Just like intel has the best cpu's at the moment, hands down. But the rx 480 changes up the game by releasing a card that's capable of delivering 200 dollar with the same performance of 300/400 dollar cards of the previous generation. But if you take a look at the pascals, titans, 1070's, 1080's, amd is just always one step behind nvidia. One day that might change, but if you look how much money nvidia made, their market share, the declining PC market, their R&D budget, I don't think AMD is going to be able to catch up. The cpu market is a completely different story, and to be fair, this is where the real battle is going to be fought, and that's why Zen is long time overdue. Again about the rx480, at the moment prices are a little high, but in time I'm sure it will be brought down closer to 200 dollar. Crossfire, meh, I admit that it's a dick move from nvidia not to release SLI support, but crossfire is very ineffective because scaling is a tricky thing, altough it might get better with dx12, we will see. In any case, it's always better to buy a higher end card instead of crossfire/sli. Like I said, at the moment there is no real competitor of the gtx 1070/1080, The fury uses too much power +4gb ram, but with the rx490 and vega cards coming I'm sure that will change. The rx490 will have 16gb of VRAM I believe, so much better then the gtx1070 and gtx1080 8gb, wich forces their customers to buy higher end gpu's with more VRAM. And the dude above me is obviously wrong lol. Dollar per fps, AMD/ati has always delivered the better results.

This reminds me of the thing that happened decades ago with revolver designs. Smith & Wesson bought the patent to be able to bore completely through the cylinder, meaning that everyone else either tried it and got lawyer-ed into oblivion, or had to make some shitty alternative designs to try and compete. This copyright nearly destroyed the revolver market because it meant that not only could S&W use the best method exclusively, but that also meant that less companies could tinker and potentially improve upon it (equating to hampered competition, which we all know is bad for the consumer) This is sort of like that, although Nvidia doesn't have as much of an iron grip (and still is causing plenty issue)

ive seen a lot of people so far saying they dont see the problem with AMD bankrupting and nvidia keeping their stuff for them selves and playing unfair games. well lets see at this past year, after AMD released their 390 which were cheaper and better performing than the 970 so people complained of the 970's prices, so nvidia dropped the prices of their 970's. If AMD goes bankrupt and cant release new cards, we will be stuck with an overpriced monopole of a graphics card which will be nvidia. And also if intel beats AMD on the processor game, buying a computer will suddenly become a much much bigger hole in your wallet than before.

+Felix Desrochers The problem with Raptr is that it's bloatware. It's a bundled social network thing. It's also not very RAM efficient, and even the recording features are bad. AMD made a bad call collabing with Raptr on Gaming Evolved, which really saddens me. It might have gotten better since its release, but I haven't used it since since I recall it being a bitch to remove from my computer properly.

+Felix Desrochers i tried to use the raptr campture feature half a year ago until i upgraded to nvidia. The raptr thing never worked good. it made my game lag. the videos were buggy (graphic bugs and stuttering everywhere) and the videos were huge. I thought shadowplay would be the same but it is nearly perfect. no sound/graphic bugs, easy to set up and nearly no performance issues. I definitly like shadowplay way more than the raptr thing.

Yeah, Vega KILLS any nvidea product out there as of now. Though nvidea buys out all the major game devs that will sell out. They put tech in games that will purposely make AMD cards run worse in those titles. Simply because it is impossible for AMD to optimize their hardware for the nvidea exclusive features, they run worse only when those features are in the game in question. What I find funny is how the nvidea fanboys refuse to accept the fact that when it comes to non-game related GPU programs, VEGA is always in the lead. Sometimes by twice as much as the titan xp.
@xSolarPhantomx
@xSolarPhantomx 6 жыл бұрын
The vega 64 is better in some aspects compared to the 1080, but the 1080 still runs about 1-2% better and surprisingly is over $100 cheaper than the vega. So the vega, currently is not worth the buy. The 1080TI destroys the vega. But that is because well, its Nvidias flagship and we all know how overboard Nvidia goes to gain that edge. I do hope for a day when AMD cards are dead equal to Nvidia because I FUCKING HATE THE GOD DAMN PRICE OF NVIDIA CARDS..... I also wish for a day when AMD and Intel are equal on the playing field too. This one i can see happening in a couple years though with how well the ryzen is doing, but on their graphics front, they are not doing as well as they could be.

@DeadLink 404 I can essentially say the same thing about ATI/AMD drivers affecting 6-7 computers I've worked on. Open source had terrible performance and overheated, proprietary had a bunch of feature and compatibility issues (and its performance outright sucked compared to the Windows driver). At the same time, Nvidia was running the same codebase for Windows and Linux, had the same or better performance on Linux, and for the most part worked out of the box (most of the issues were related to Bumblebee and such). Even if AMD did change some things later on, we had already endured a decade of ATI/AMD cards essentially being paperweights on Linux.

+prettylittleditty89 keeping your technology going into the cards open source does not make it collaboration. If AMD and Nvidia collaborated it would be on the design of the chip, the pcb, the cooler, etc. Not on software used by the chips them selves. Releasing the software makes an even playing field proving who truly has the better chip. When the software is closed source a card from either company can perform better or worse even with the same specs.

***** "New" dirty level? Since when is closed source / proprietary software "new"? Do you know the trend in software is moving towards open-source, and not away from it? It's a good thing tech nerds are generally such a fan of open standards over shotgun-strategy technologies, which is why Internet Explorer 11 was completely competitive against Chrome. Huh? Oh, wait... A bit of history. I am one of those people who gave IE11 an extensive chance. It's important to note, I'm a web developer, so my viewpoint comes from the tech side, not just the end result. Basically, whenever I found IE11 broke with some new web technology, I would go "Stupid Microsoft!" and then look it up, only to find a blog post from Microsoft saying "X feature was badly designed before standardization - we're proposing an open standard that solves its issues, and it's actually likely going to be accepted." But websites tended to develop for specific browsers to "give the best experience", and so a lot of websites kind of shuffle their feet nervously if you're not using an iPhone, or Chrome. It's usually not because IE11 doesn't support their features, but because many of them were still writing "IF userAgent contains IE then..." code that actually made everything worse. In the present situation, both Edge and Opera now have to pretend to be Chrome in their "user Agent" to avoid getting shut out entirely. The takeaway from the browser war of the past few years is that the winner couldn't get there by waiting for standardization. In this allegory, Google / NVidia don't have to wait for anyone to say that a particular feature is okay or makes sense, or even bawk at how sloppy their initial code interface is (Making 400 "game profiles" inside your graphics driver is not particularly good design). The end result is just that "it works". (Another thing to keep in mind; it's easier to license the use of outside technologies if you don't plan to open-source your project.) It's also worth noting that it's not necessarily "Gameworks makes games look bad on AMD". It really could be as simple as "Development studios often CAN'T make those features at all, and with Gameworks they can - although the optimization is only on one end." I'll admit, AMD doesn't have the manpower or budget to provide a similar service, and thus developers aren't as open to support them. That's kind of disappointing. But, ultimately it's not NVidia's unfairness; it's a basic consequence of the circumstance. I've bought only NVidia cards, but I at least hope for AMD to catch up with DirectX 12. I am very much aware of the horrors of a one-horse race - I just worry NVidia gets a disproportionate amount of the blame.

+Katana (Sorry, just recalled another point!) As with IE11, it actually made a lot of sense for IE to be super-standardized, as opposed to Chrome's strategy of loading up the kitchen sink. If they had gone on another ActiveX tirade, developers would quite quickly look at the two browsers - one used by everyone, and one used by none, and specifically use the features of the popular one, leaving any IE11-specific technologies to sit in the dust. It made sense to go for technologies that could be shared, that are viewed as "cross-platform", because then a developer can look at the options and at least think "Hey, by aiming for the standardized technologies, we can hit both platforms". It's worth noting that after Microsoft lost a lot of ground on technology, they started making a lot of their products open-source, as an ultimately effective measure to win developers back who needed to make technologies work everywhere. So, don't view AMD's open-source gestures as just them being "nice" or "good for the whole graphics industry". It's a very logical business move, since due to their recent unpopularity, they could never convince anyone to tightly integrate "AMDworks" into their game.

+Katana you use the word allegory, but I don't think it means what you think it means. I want to point out how Battlefront looks and how Fallout 4 looks, AMD games are prettier and run fine on both techs, so I don't see the problem here. Since you know all this crap, it makes me wonder why you chose nvidia gpu? At first when I wanted new graphics card, I just checked the one that has most sales (960) but was very disappointed with its performance, so I kept digging and ended up getting r9 390. It just offers more performance for less cash. It isn't hard to find best performance for $$ so I don't get why is nvidia selling so many cards, it confuses me.
@Katana314
@Katana314 8 жыл бұрын
You're right, I may have been trying to think of another word and picked out the wrong one. I actually recognize that in raw numbers, AMD cards usually give great bang for buck, but there were a mountain of individual "crashes on AMD", "poor performance on AMD", "stupid AMD drivers" posts that eventually made me think that I'd get a more reliable performance baseline with NVidia and their drivers, no matter what the actual numbers are. So far, I feel like I've been mostly right. Another deciding aspect for me was how Nvidia develops supporting technologies like ShadowPlay (always worked better for me than AMD's recorder), GameStream, and PhysX. Again, you might hate that they don't open those up, but it's an investment and they want to make the most of it. And, AMD wants to make the most of similar technologies by encouraging people to use cross-platform, open-source software, thus equalizing the playing field. Sadly, like Microsoft Office vs LibreOffice, sometimes the proprietary technologies are just more reliable.

Katana that driver thing is a myth. I looked at performance of 290x benchmarks and compare them to performance of 390x benchmarks. 390 is basically like 290 with more vram, and it seems AMD performance is increased with age due to drivers. I have gtx 660 atm (waiting for 390 to upgrade) and my display drivers shut down every now and then since gameready drivers came, they are crappy. Plus check out the nvidia forums of people complaining how their old cards are not working up to their full potential, they have trouble for same reason AMD cards have in new games - gameworks. That is why I didn't get 970. Pricier, riskier, shorter life span, they lied about vram - only good thing about it was the power consumption, but I can live with a little extra power consumed on full load. Adds up to a buck a month or something silly like that.
@ABaumstumpf
@ABaumstumpf 8 жыл бұрын
+Mario D. Zmaj Of course old Nvidia cards will have trouble with gameworks - as that is heavily designed to fit the new architecture - that is quite a bit more focused on shaders and tesselation. The difference between nvidia an AMD is quite simple - Nvidia talks and cooperates with game-devs. They sent out their own teams to help gamedevs incorporate GameWorks as on their own they would not be able to make anything nearly as good. It takes a lot of work to get a decent hair-simulation up and running, more than the devs would have the time or budget for. This is where Nvidia shines. Yeah, AMD cards have the better raw power in many fields - and nvidia makes up for that with better drivers and support. Leading to their cards givving an overall better impression and performance for the same money.
