This is definitely going into the back of my head for the next night out with the gang and somebody complains about the long lines to the women's. I'll bring up, in slurred speech and 6 pints 4 shots in, this amazing idea I can't remember where I got from but will absolutely try to perpetuate as my own novel thought. Thanks, Philip!

This is actually exactly the design, minus the urimals, my college implemented. Naturally the girls complained that they were sharing surfaces with boys. But the open design removed the "we could be attacked" argument and it all greatly improved efficiency. Cubicles were nearly sealed floor to ceiling so you felt properly private. fully sealed toilets are my favourite places when in public. A little heaven to relax in.

Toilet blocks have doors to keep the smell in. I worked outside an "open" toilet block for about a year and a half, and when doors were installed on the front of the block it was like bliss. My office no longer stunk of shit and piss. Also, from the same thought process - not to be rude, but women's bathroom habits stink. Really bad. Fishy fanny period smell is not something I ever want to smell again. Most disabled toilets have button-operated electric doors, as well. I'm staunchly against charging for the privilege of using the facilities, though.
@christopherstein2024
@christopherstein2024 2 жыл бұрын
I used to be against charging as well but I have found that toilets that charge a small fee are much nicer with much less piss on the seats. And WE are paying for them anyway! Might as well be the exact people that acutally use them. However the people have maintain controll on the means of urination. 50 cents is ok with me.
@Tondadrd
@Tondadrd 2 жыл бұрын
@@christopherstein2024 I strongly disagree. Letting in only the people who are willing to pay causes the other to piss outside smelling up the place. It's unneeded restriction dividing people based on money. And added cost of money collecting be it personnel or machine. It just happend to me that I wanted to pay, there was a card terminal, but it didn't accept the card, didn't work. I had to go to under the spinning tri-pipe. Wasted my time and added anxiety to my toilet visit.
@christopherstein2024
@christopherstein2024 2 жыл бұрын
@@Tondadrd If not pissing on the road / your dignity isn't worth 50 cent to someone then that's a much bigger and problem concerning culture that should be addressed. If there is a pretty and private bush outside and you're finding it nicer to piss there for free using your water bottle to wash your hands then that's a completely legitimate option imo and I've done that pretty often. "It's unneeded restriction deviding people based on money." This is a very far reaching statement. We restrict people all the time based on money. You're kind of asking "Why do we even have to pay for things?". The loo doesn't build and clean itself and the people doing it for you most likely want something in return. Money is very efficient at organizing the exchange of values. So that's why we pay for things and concerning the toilet: either the people using it pay for it or a larger group of people including those who don't use it pay for it. In a restaurant it may be efficient to charge everyone a bit extra on the food to pay for the toilet. But in a city it's maybe better to have the people using it pay for it since since lot's of people don't use public restrooms. Many free public toilet are so nasty that I would rather pee in the bushes anyway but the ones wich required some money in my experience are clean and nice so I prefer those.
@Tondadrd
@Tondadrd 2 жыл бұрын
@@christopherstein2024 It's not about dignity. There are homeless people. I would like to pay for them to use the toilet for peeing. I don't like to give money to anyone if they might use it for something, like buying more alcohol. If I can pay specifically for the toilet, that would be grand. Like I (only rarely) buy food directly for them. I would rather have a public toilet on the train station than a paid one. Like we all pay for infrastructure, I would like to add toilets to that list. People need to pee, so just let them. I would rather have the payment baked in than think whether I want to pee now or in 10 minutes on the train. I just want a cleaner city, where everyone lives, paid by everyone. Including me.

A true shitpost! I had to pause when you got to the communal urinal, because I experienced a 4 man urinal while at a concert last week. It was a large tank with four spots on each side, such that we were all standing opposite to another person, like a plus sign. This formation made it easy, but somehow not awkward, to see and talk to the other people who were also hyped for the concert, while still giving enough privacy, since you could not see other people past your own corner, except from the upper torso and up. On the top of the urinal was a cup holder for your alcohol, fantastic experience.

Great use of your mapping skills, Philip! A great visualisation of what world pees could look like. To add to your urinal suggestion, i propose the inverted comural, where people stand in a circle with their backs to each other, pissing into a hole shaped like a ring around the pissing men. The "Comuring". That would give more privacy in (almost) the same space. One spot needs to be sacrificed for a bridge over the Comuring's ring-shaped hole in order to allow men to enter the Comuring. but i believe it will pay off, as more men will feel comfortable using it at the same time.

So I have one problem with two of the things you propose: Piss stinks. That means, you will need more separation between the actual toilets and the entry, because you don't want the stench outside. Putting a room with the sinks first and after that the toilets should work. I'm also not a fan of the trough, because unlike a urinal, the piss hangs around much longer making it a lot smellier.
@killingtimeitself
@killingtimeitself 2 жыл бұрын
you could get around that by providing a negative pressure zone in the bathroom, causing a natrual flow of air from the outside to the inside, isolating airflow, also for the piss troughs, you would want to design it such that it isnt a literal trough, more so a slanted basin that leads into a small maybe half inch gap at the very bottom into a collection pipe, this will help with smell substantially. Though you could just add some form of washing system but thats fairly convoluted and lets be realistc here.

It mostly stink when it's allowed to hang around for long. And nothing makes it hang around more than if you miss the urinal completely. A big advantage of the trough design is that it's impossible to miss it as long as you stand close enough (that requires regular cleaning so that you are not tempted to stand further back; but that is true of all public toilets). All urinals require automatic flushing to prevent smell; so this design requires a bit more water; but it's easily scalable to fit different traffic, so it's not as big a problem. Also it's just as easy to use for tall people as for children; while separate urinals are usually optimal for only one height, and impossible for most children.

The design at my university had a wall down the middle ending at a communal hand washing space close to the door, and two rows of cubicles either side. There were two entrances, but neither were marked. It created this interesting illusion of being a gendered toilet, because there are two entrances and two distinct halves, when in reality it was unified. If women entered one side, a man would typically enter the other side, despite technically entering the same restroom. It simultaneously provided the security and comfort for people who didn't want to share a restroom, but also the lack of labels where everyone was free to use all the cubicles at once. It's been years but this video reminded me of how good that restroom design was.

My sixth form did this - I think it was because the male cubicles didn't have bins for sanitary products (which in general isn't a good practice as what about men with incontinence pads or nappies, trans men with menstrual products, etc), absolutely awful for everyone and decreasing capacity significantly. In school environments I think this effect is worsened because if all one gender's toilets are taken up people will be less comfortable going to the other side even though it's the same and just a cubicle, in a workplace or public place there's going to be less stigma and potentially less mocking so people will just make use of the other cubicles in a design like this. No reason for it though, just dumb.

I work at a place with separate bathrooms, I don't want people to bone in the communal bathroom, your prototype needs a deterrent. I suggest the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, an American single-seat, twin-engine, straight-wing jet aircraft developed by Fairchild-Republic in the early 1970s. It is the only United States Air Force aircraft designed solely for close air support of ground forces, which will come in handy when obliterating any couple entering the stall together. The A-10 was built to attack tanks, armored vehicles, and other ground targets with limited air defenses so there will be no worries about the ammunition being ineffective due to the stall being indoors. Equiped with the GAU-8 Avenger, a rotary cannon that is the airplane's primary armament and the heaviest such cannon mounted on an aircraft it would have sufficient firepower and precision to slay any transgressor of the no boneing rule. With all this in mind I'd ask for a phone with a hotline to the Warthog be installed and funds put aside for ammunition fuel and roughly 3 A-10s for maximum coverage in terms of shift rotation and redundancy so a craft can circle the bathroom at all times.

I'm a design student and I actually love this idea! Some really good points from your part. My school has unisex toilets (and probably had them for ages), mainly because there aren't enough restrooms there. There are only two restrooms at each floor, and since it's a pretty big building, they are probably like a hundred meters apart, which would be just too far for whichever sex is unlucky enough to have them further from their classroom. Plus, we're an art school, so we often work with paint and other materials, so having a source of water nearby (for washing hands, brushes, tools or whatever else) is important (and apart from the restrooms, there are no sinks). Lastly, many people are gender fluid these days, especially at a school like ours, so it's just so much easier and more efficient to have unisex toilets. Cubicles offer enough privacy. There are virtually no urinals at our school (there is one in some of the restrooms, but nobody really uses them), they are not necessary, especially given that over 3/4 of people in the building are female. You made a great point about women having to wait in lines at busy places (and as we all know, they often go to men's toilets if they are in a hurry), and I like your solution too. Maybe apart from the Yellow Shower :D But separating the urinals like that is great. So is making the toilets unisex and removing the door (goodbye me having to press the door handle with my elbow, with a finger through a sleeve or kicking the door open). If I ever get to designing interiors (which I hope I will), some of your ideas will surely come in handy!

I have often gone down a Wikipedia rabbit hole of toilet designs. Inventors have tried to make female urinals but they never really worked out well enough. I think one potential flaw with this is that during peak toilet times, women would end up sharing their limited cubicle capacity with men who decide to use cubicles in the absence of any free urinals, it may well cause women to have to wait even longer for toilets. Perhaps some sort of mathematical model based on toileting behaviour data to test it out is in order.

The door is pretty important for ventilation. Also, have you ever been on a camping ground with doorless toilets? You can smell them from 10m away, and that is in open space. The piss-trough is a great invention, it serves as a 2nd option sink for drunks, generating entertainment for others. One thing that is different for our US friends is, that public toilet stalls often have gaps in the doors sides, giving a nice view inside while walking past. Officially, to disincentivize drug abuse.
@killingtimeitself

For the ventilation issue, the 2-way push door mentioned would probably be preferable. I would advise a transparent door, though, so you can see someone coming and so there's still an openness about it. It should also be double doors, so there isn't that awkward situation of a person on either side trying to get in. They can just follow driving rules and enter their respective door.

At my school, they added a gender neutral toilet. Unfortunately they didn't have urinals so the toilet seats were covered in piss. It got so bad that individual stalls were regendered so females could have clean seats. Also in many jurisdictions they have laws that dictate the number of male and female toilets depending on the building occupancy. So the gender neutral toilets need to be built in addition to traditional toilets, which is less efficient. That said, great video. This is definitely the future once we get past the growing pains.

the thing about doors on toilets - shopping centres (in australia) get this perfect. the door is just a 90 degree hallway entrance. there's 0 risk of accidentally peering in, but no need to use a door either. very swag.
