WONDERFULLY Sung, Beautiful Jazz Rendition of a CLASSIC Song
@kitty2pat7 жыл бұрын
I love the sound of Angie etc., and I keep playing it but Angie substituted some of the words. Red wrote this song about his parents. His Mom left the family when he was 3 and it's a song about how hurtful it was to come up without his mother not knowing if she was dead or alive or why she left. His father was broken and never remarried. He says: " strangled by the wishes of Pater: yearning for the arms of Mater... " The story is quite sad and touching.
@davidspatola62866 жыл бұрын
He talks about pater (father) and mater (mother). You're right, the song loses meaning when she changed lyrics
@awickedtribe5 жыл бұрын
No one can touch the original but even with the lyric change this song is overall, the better cover out there.
@vanessajazp63415 жыл бұрын
He says it was about that moment when it's time to leave home, and he's reflecting on all the memories growing up, including what you mentioned about his parents. "Holding on" is that last, long moment before letting go and moving on. The beauty of it is that it can be interpreted in so many meaningful ways.
@SCfanIam1004 жыл бұрын

Normally changing the lyrics to a great song is a dis-service but sometimes, just sometimes, it works. I might be biased because I am a big fan of Angie Stone, but I like this version, it's by far the better one I have yet to hear. A well written song is one without definite content, it's interpretable in different ways, but only if the feel of the original is part of that content. Angie and her band did that here, in my opinion. Still, the original is light years ahead.
@marilynlawson82164 жыл бұрын
I agree.
