I’d suggest using foam cut by a CNC router, but that’s what I’m used to. High density foam is unaffected by water, durable, and can be finished to look like stone. Additionally, the CNC option would allow sections/modularity for ease of installation-that is, you could carve out meter-by-meter squares that would become seamless once assembled.

Colin, it would be really cool if you could release a VR app so that people with VR headsets can explore your tunnel system in <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="61">1:1</a> scale. Also, for the tunnel section down to the bunker, you should definitely put in a T-junction at the halfway point. You could use it as an alcove, but it would also give you the option of adding another bunker in the garden at some point in the future (underground pool with retractable roof maybe)? The tunnel run is going to end up being so long that you could do with some kind of wheeled chair to move you from the garage to the bunker - maybe a chair on a rail system, with a hydraulic seat that could raise you up into the shed/pantry? Just a thought!

love how colin described 'scrolling through someone's instagram feed and build a model of the places they've been'. this is something that's used in cybersecurity when profiling someone mostly a criminal/a criminal org, it is essentially stalking on a hardcore scale where every piece of digital information that was ever left behind by the person you're tracking has been collected and grouped as evidence. pretty neat stuff ngl.
@Skrap007

I’d approach the rock face like a movie set designer would, which is normally out of foam instead of 3d printed. Which is carved out with a CNC Router, which a large 5 axis would be really the way to go. But a standard CNC Router should get the majority of it, and you might need to remove drastic undercuts in the model for that.
@catafalque3634

As a set designer I totally agree! 3D printing isn’t really suited to this project. Could also just take a mould and cast it. Plenty of experts out there - Pinewood is full of them!

Back when I used to build sets and escape rooms we would carve rock faces out of foam with a mini chain saw, and then paint them to look realistic. A 3d scan and CNC machine could work, also could 3d printing - though it would take a long time!

Luckily, the stratification is horizontal and a section could be replaced where the deep changes occur. One could even use the top half and invert it (if it is large enough) and remove a small strip (you don't want the center aligning perfectly).

You should take the 3d scan of the wall, including the sides and floor, shrink it, and use that as the whole recess. Rocks on the back, sides and base of the recess, like a little zoomed out version of the entire rock face. This would solve the issue with depth as well.

Just a thought, but a few years ago Tested showed off a project where a statue of Rosie The Riveter was made by splitting up and model into bits that individuals could print and send over. Maybe viewers could each print wall sections, and send them to Colin for gluing together? Perhaps a plaque nearby in the garage could list the contributions?

The 3D scan is quite very cool, a very unique way to photograph everything. For the pho rock reveal through the window, would it be an option to hit up the rock face with some mold release and spray it with a layer of silicone, and the foam for rigidity. Then it could be pulled off and molded with concrete and painted.

@Hendeesh
@Hendeesh 2 сағат бұрын
Like many have likely commented already, get in touch with a good scenic artist/painter. You could flatten the relief of the wall to just 30-50mm and still achieve the illusion of depth with paint and texture effects. Especially as it will be behind glass, so not possible to touch it and feel the lack of relief.

It seems like they're still figuring out this 3D imaging technology, and using different locations to study...While this is a good approach it doesn't really give them an accurate benchmark for if they're improving the technology/techniques. What would work better for improving it, would be locating a cave/cliff/natural-tunnel/etc. in a public park/forest preserve/nature preserve/conserve/arboretum and then re-attempting the same scan once a year. Then they just need to compare the time it took each year. Scan the same cave once a year and see if the students/technology can do it faster than the previous year. Use something near the school which the instructor can take students to safely. There's something around nearby, I guarantee it. It's a beautiful planet we live on.

This is either a brilliant or a stupid idea: When scaling to reduce the depth of a segment of rock face, the scaling factor should become progressively larger with depth. So the frontmost bits stay at original scale, the middle bits get squished down a bit and the deepest recesses are squished down a lot. Basically at first I though one could just cut off the back half and replace it with a flat image of the rock face (aka, front half at scale 1 and back half at scale 0). The flat photo would be visible only in the deep recesses where it's dark/shadowed anyway. Then I realized that with 3d printing it's possible to do this more gradual and there'd be no abrupt change in depth scale, which tends to be noticeable (think looking into a pool)

Would love to see this uploaded into Meta Hyperscape for us to experience! (or turned into a matterport world for us to zip around in and experience ourselves). Great video and scan though, so cool!!

Per Gemini AI: In the Terminator universe, the primary purpose of Terminators is to eliminate the human resistance. Once that objective is achieved, their fate becomes uncertain. Here are a few possibilities: * Deactivation: Without a specific mission or target, it's possible that the Terminators could simply power down or be deactivated by Skynet. * Reassignment: Skynet might reprogram the Terminators for other tasks, such as maintaining infrastructure or exploring the ruins of human civilization. * Idle Existence: In the absence of a clear directive, the Terminators could continue to exist in a state of idle operation, their advanced systems still functioning but without purpose. * Self-Preservation: Some Terminators might develop a sense of self-preservation and seek to maintain their own existence, perhaps by scavenging for energy or resources. Ultimately, the fate of the Terminators in a human-free world is open to speculation. The extent of their sentience and the nature of their programming would likely determine their actions and survival.

A rezin tabletop with the layout of your tunnels or a horizontal mould of that back wall would look brilliant yanno. Wouldn’t have a clue how to do it though 😅 Loved watching these Colin mate and merry Christmas to you everyone watching too 🎉🎄
