2nd Viva Raw Recall in 6 Months… What Happened?

I am so tired of searching for a trustworthy pet food company! Every time I think I've found one, something like this happens. The story is usually that the company was good at one time, and then the founders sold it, or the company expanded and became just like all other rapacious evil corporations. Do these founders even care anymore, about their reputation if not their company endangering pets?? Zach Ao and Jennifer Wu should be commenting on this. Their silence speaks volumes. They have claimed that they founded Viva in part as a response to other pet food companies lack of transparency (!) and how hard it was to find wholesome food to feed their beloved dog. The irony.

You can look for something that has been in business for many years, or even decades so you can look at their track record. I feed a rotation of Dr. Harvey's (never had a recall, in business for 40 years), Grandma Lucy's (never had a recall, in business for 25 years), Carna4 (never recalled, in business for 14 years).

That's terrible!!! I wanted to try Viva Raw & now I don't trust them! Thanks for sharing! Glad I know now not to buy from Viva RAW. I wasn't happy with the first recall in January and definitely not happy that there's another one! I'm feeding Stella and Chewy's Raw Dinner Morsels, but wanted to try Viva Raw & Fetching Foods. I can try Darwin's to see.

Darwins has had recalls in the past and so has stella and chewy's. Stellas was also for listeria. My point being trying to avoid brands with recalls is a losing battle.

My dogs are all (3) not eating dog food. They will eat, however, steamed vegies and slow cooked chicken and other meats. Also, homemade goodies at times. They are small dogs, so it's not too horrific. But they eat now. One of them is a vegetarian. She has liver shunts. So far home cooking is working. She gets small amounts of egg, cheese, and cottage cheese at times. They all love fruit, too. Also, raw turnips and the like.

My cat lost weight eating exclusively viva raw which is not good. I also noticed a change in the recent batch...the meat looks like it has pink dye of some sort and the rabbit looked watery. So sad, They seemed good....but I feel the quality has gone down. I also didnt know they used copackers...that is definitely not good. My cat also seems hesitant to eat it. I think i am going to try homemade, at least i know what is in it. I gotva recipe from Tge Little Carnivore

When I fed Darwins I found out they were sending less than 400 cal a day when my vet recommended 800 cal and my puppy lost weight. Unfortunately allowing myself to buy into the raw marketing and holistic medicine prolonged my dogs suffering as he has IBD. I believed channels like this and unfortunately I have likely caused further irreversible scarring to my dogs GI tract because I didn’t trust Hill’s prescription diet. I know this movement is very convincing but I hope my short story can maybe push you to look into WSAVA foods outside this echo chamber. These companies like viva raw prey on our love of our dogs and convince us they are the solution to the fears they manufacture, and now a dog is dead. At least, maybe check the calories companies send, because in mine and other cases they dramatically underfeed.

​@@emerson23946 How are you related to Hills? Are you paid by them? A dog is dead, you say. A single dog. Big corporate pet food murders many dogs per year. Purina One is currently murdering pets. Hill’s "prescription" diet is trash. Have you seen the lawsuit against them? Have you looked at the ingredients list?? I wouldn't feed my worst enemy 4D meats. Dead, dying, diseased, and disabled animals that are left to rot unrefrigerated for days, and then cooked and extremely high heat to kill the pathogens, which denatures the proteins. Cats don't need wheat and corn and soybean oil and dried beet pulp, they need wholesome meat.

I’ve been feeding Open Farm Freeze Dried Raw Patties to my working line boxer! I have been worried about the grain free part but what are your opinions on this food?!!??!!

The problem with grain free is when they add legumes that they feel are blocking the uptake of taurine which is so important for heart health for dogs and cats. I don’t feed my cats anything with legumes or potatoes and I give them 1/8 teaspoon of powder taurine(500 mg which is much higher than Aafco standards so I know that they aren’t deficient in taurine) Animals can’t “overdose” on taurine as the body expels what it doesn’t need. Open Farm freeze dried patties doesn’t use ingredients that block taurine. It’s when grain free food replaces the grain with legumes and potatoes that potentially create the problem. There is a great blog on Dr Judy Morgan’s website about the mechanisms of taurine in the body.
