Many Thanks, Dennis. I had a #9 that I couldn't get to go into free spool. With the help of your fine video it is working great. I don't think I'm ever going to be a big fan of working on Penn reels. They seem to have been designed by a man with three hands. I'd much rather work on an old Abu 5000.

Great video and explanations. I found a very dusty peerless 9 in my grandma's attic and am now in the process of rebuilding it. It needed a new drag and I ordered new spool bearings at the same time....overkill?
@2ndChanceTackle5 жыл бұрын
I always replace the drags on my reels when doing an annual, or longer, service. They are cheap enough for the peace of mind they provide. The bearings are probably overkill, but as long as you fo not know the history of the reel and the condition of the bearings, then a fresh start with replacing them is OK. These parts rarely wear out and a shot of oil during routine service keeps them working - Thanks for asking - Good luck with the rebuild. The #9 is a great reel - Dennis
@barryz19695 жыл бұрын
@@2ndChanceTackle Thanks again! The rebuild went great and the reel feels and operates as new. It was pretty gritty so I tore it all down and degreased in naptha, polished the bakelite with plastic polish and polished the chrome. then put it together with new Penn grease and oil. I love using the vintage gear to put fish in the boat, it seems to be as well built as my Ocean City 922 topsail reel that helped me get a nice Chinook salmon last fall on the Siletz river.

How can you tell when an HT-100 drag is worn out? I changed one recently that didn't seem soft enough...but I should take the reel back apart to see if I missed the spring washer. The carbon fiber drags didn't seem to be worn. I wouldn't use steel wool around assembled/clean parts. 000 steel wool sheds a lot. That flat spring surprised me, I haven't been inside a Peerless 9 yet. That seems odd.
@2ndChanceTackle6 жыл бұрын
First clue is that the drags don't hold under pressure. There is a dimple grid on the HT-100 washers. If these are worn smooth, then they need to be replaced. The smooth face will cause the drags to slip. These washers are stiff by nature, so having limited flexibility is not necessarily a cause. Penn uses two types of anti-reverse springs. There is the small coil spring and then there is the flat spring shown in this video. The flat spring is found on some older reels like the early Long Beach, Delmar and Beachmasters. - Dennis

I am also having a bit of trouble with the line guide - that doesn't turn either upon re-assembly. I've followed your instructions from the video but am still experiencing the issue. Any tips?
@2ndChanceTackle9 ай бұрын
You may want to back off the non gear side plate adjuster. Also, make sure that the slot on the pinion gear is facing the spool. Finally, did you take the pawl out of the line guide? If you did, you need to make sure it is seated properly when you reinstall it. The reel will not turn if the pawl is not in the track of the worm gear - Dennis

Thanks for the video, have a question about the penn peer 9 I just cleaned and lubed. I had to straighten the line guide slightly in order for it to ride and stay in the upper track, working fine but seems to be quite a bit of lateral play to the worm and curious if this is normal.
@2ndChanceTackle3 жыл бұрын
There should be some lateral play but not a lot. Have you tightened down the screw adjuster on the handle side of the reel? That controls tension on the worm gear and side to side play. Tighten it down completed and then back it off about 1/4 to 1/2 turn to get the ideal free play. Dennis
@ob64983 жыл бұрын
@@2ndChanceTackle Thanks for the reply. Have tightened it down as far as it goes, looks like it should go another 1/2 turn but won't go. Have backed it out and tightened it several times with no change, Reel seems to be working alright, very smooth, has about 1/8" play with screw adjuster tight.

@otroflores916 жыл бұрын
@@nicholassmerk I think a 500 that has been converted to narrow is called a yellow tail special. Don't quote me on that tho.
@2ndChanceTackle6 жыл бұрын
Most handles for the older Penn reels will fit this. Try one from the Model 155 or the larger one from the Long Beach series. They have the same size gear sleeve. They cannot be converted to non-levelwind, but you can disable the feature. You can remover the line guide and worm and fish this as a conventional reel. Just take the pawl out of the line guide, so that it moves freely, then take the side plate screw out to remove the worm gear shaft. That will give you room to remove the line guide. You could then reinsert the worm gear or leave it out. Your line guide may be popping out because the channel is not aligned properly on the cross post. Try loosening the side plate screws on the top post and rotating it towards the line guide tip until it is firmly in the channel. That may help. - Dennis

You do not have a problem. Some anti-reverse dogs make the clicking sound, some do not. It is usually a matter of whiter there is grease on the gear sleeve or not. The free spool is normal as well from what you are describing. Dennis

Hi Dennis why do level winds have plastic gears
@2ndChanceTackle3 жыл бұрын
There needs to be flex in the gears that mesh the worm drive and the drive gear. The plastic gear gives it that play and actually saves the reel is it gets hung up. If the plastic gear breaks, it eliminates a lot more severe damage that could occur within the reel if the reel was to keep cranking

@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
That is a tough question to answer. Is your spool turning? I assume you mean that you are pushing the free spool release lever. If the spool is not turning easily, try backing off the side plate adjuster bearing. If the spool is turning, it should be able to cast. If the bearing does not solve the issue, then something is incorrect in the way you put the gearing back together. Also, Check the work gear and idler gears that drive the line guide and check the pawl to make sure they move freely. - Dennis

Something is binding that shouldn't be. Check to make sure your earred washers are in the grooves inside the main drag. If they are not, then the reel will bind. Also, check to see if the line guide is traveling smoothly or if that is the cause. Take the pawl out of the line guide. The will allow the line guide to go left and right without and resistance. If it is binding, then readjust to top post with the groove to take the pressure off of the line guide.

It all depends on your type of fishing. In saltwater, the Long Beach 60/65 is great for drop fishing. The Senator 3/0 is very versatile.
