Just found one of these in my basement. Do you spool the line underhand or overhand and do you run the line through those 2 horizontal posts in the front or over or under?
@2ndChanceTackle3 жыл бұрын
The reel faces up as a top mount on the pole. The line spools over the top forward bar. It does not got between the crossposts. You need to manually guide the line back and forth with your thumb as you reel in order to avoid bunching - Dennis

Hey Dennis, if I wanted to increase the drag max I read somewhere that you can add an additional carbon fiber washer between the main gear and the bridge plate, my question to you is : would the added drag washer be under the the stock washer touching the plate or on top touching the main gear ? Or is the added drag washer replacing the stock washer ? Thanks for your how to vids.
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
To increase max drag, you need to increase surface area, so replacing them does not get that done. You should put the extra on top of the last.flat washer and then put the cap washer on before reinstalling the bridge - Dennis

Thanks for the videos. I've repaired several penn senators and a couple of long beaches. Videos were very helpful. Got a question though; have you ever repaired or done a video on a Long Beach 66 pre 1953? I believe I have one based on the fact that it has the copper strap in lieu of the dog spring. Additionally there are some differences between post 1953 Long Beach 66 and post. The side plates are slightly different and there are some additional parts. I put it back together the way it came apart but something doesn't feel right with it. Any suggestions?
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
The flat dog spring was used not he early Penn Reels and most were converted over to the coil spring by 1957. The set ups on the 66 are similar throughout the production. The drag stack used thicker washers then. If it is not working right, I would get the schematic from Mysticparts.com, available in the parts section, and check the assembly again. It should be just like an older Senator black sided reel - Thanks for asking
@tdraleigh4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the response. Mystic parts for the Long Beach I have are not helpful. The model I have has the drag washers accessible from outside the reel. I did find some info looking at the 113 4/0 diagram that mentions older reels had a felt washer and a collar with drag washers being accessed outside the reel. I did this by looking at miscellaneous side plates on eBay because my side plate does not match any of the other 66s I've seen. Happy new year!

Oh and I see you did mention it is like the old senators in your original response. You were exactly right. I just didn't comprehend what you were saying until just now.

Aloha! How's it going Dennis, I recently bought a Penn long beach 67 and I was wondering if the spool is interchangeable with the older style Penn 113H Special Senator Reel? TIA and great informative videos!
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
I can't say for certain. You are correct to note that the older 67/68 Long Beach reels shared a lot of parts with the Senator 4/0 series. I am just not certain on the spool. if you have both reels, you can swap one out and give it a try. Unfortunately, the schematics list different part numbers for the spools, but that may be a matter of one being aluminum and another being the older chromed version. Dennis

Dennis, great channel! I have a penn long beach 60 and the drag is really tight. When star is in contact with the handle, drag it is tight. When you turn star a 1/2 turn it is 100% tight. Not sure what the problems is. Drag/Washer count is standard, the same as in your video, it just seems really tight. Any advice would be appreciated? I also have another question, my LB60 has a small hole on the non gear side plate. I have also seen this on some of the LB65's. It is about 3/16 in diameter. Do you know what this hole is for? Thanks Kevin
@2ndChanceTackleАй бұрын
The tight drag is likely associated with worn or compressed drag washers. Both limit the effective range of adjustment. It would be best to replace them to restore the drag functions. Do these.reels have the bait alarm clicker? It may be that the hole is where that was located if it is missing - Dennis

That may be what it is for, but it is missing. The hole has flats for accommodating a nut.

Hi Dennis, have been watching a few of your videos which have proved very informative. In the process of getting new worm and pawl for a Penn GT 320LD which should see that reel working again once installed. In regards to this video i also have my first ever reel a Peen Long Beach 66 which is overdue for a service. I notice you did not refer to the 66 in your video. Are there any notable differences i should be looking out for before i start pulling it to bits?
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
Robert - first, thank you for watching. The Penn 66,67 and 68 are the next size up from the others, that is why it was not mentioned in the same group as the 60 and 65. The 66 and above share the internals with the older black sided Senator 4/0. From a service perspective, the stars are the same and the location of the springs and internal parts do not differ significantly. Good luck on the tune ups. They are great reels - Dennis

Dennis what do i do if the knob is tight on the handle? or did i miss you talking about that? it turns, but it's not nice and loose...
@2ndChanceTackle5 жыл бұрын
David. Assuming that there is not a mechanical blockage, like the end of the handle being bent and interfering with the complete turn of the knob, then the first treatment is to spray a penetrating oil like WD40 or Liquid Wrench on the base, where the shaft connects to the handle arm. If you have the rubber handle with the hole up top, then give it a squirt there as well. Let it sit for 15 minutes or so and then turn to work it free. - Dennis

These were one of the earliest designs and models that Penn made. There were first offered in the 1940s and were produced for over 60 years. The reels varied in side plate design and color, so it is hard to say when one was made without further research. They were most popular in the 1970s and 80s
