Penn 10 Mag tuned fishing reel how to service the reel and repair a fauly line guide

This reel came to my shop with a defective level line feature. This video shows how to diagnose the problem and do a complete service and take apart on the reels.

Just scored one of these guys in mint condition at a thrift store , spoiled it up and landed a 6ft 85lb white sturgeon ! Had a blast reeling him in on this reel and now i want 5hem on all my sturgeon rods lol

This was relatively rare, but it is one of the best reels Penn made. It is really a narrow body Penn Squidder with a Penn Jigmaster gear set. Very powerful reel in a small format

I'm subscribed and give you my "Like " , yes it may only be be one like , but compared to thousands of daily dislikes , your batting a Thousand ! Do these reels actually eliminate the danger of a backlash? I know spinning reels very well but I don’t know about magnetic conventional reels. I always put a double layer of shop towels (blue) on my workbench to keep everything clean, absorb oils, and help me to see as I am visually impaired. I seem to end up doing a lot of “balancing acts” while working on fishing reels. It is probably my inexperience. I’ve worked on over 200 reels but there is so much I don’t know. I really like my spinning reels that have worm gear mechanism. They are some of my best spinning reels. You did your customary excellent job on this reel! I sent you a bunch of photos of my infamous “666” reel tonight as well as a unique Daiwa I got as a “tuition” reel. I think you’ll like both these reels! ---Chris

They help to slow the spool at a consistent rate so that a abrupt stop does not cause the backlash. It is an assist, not a panacea - Dennis

I have a new to me Penn 320 GT2 and wanted to fit it to an Ugly Stik Tiger lite rod but the reel seat or foot i call it is too long , not by much at all to fit the real seat area on the rod. Does 310 GTI have a shorter smaller reel foot that I need to match the reel to the rod? thanks sir.

The reel seats are about the same size throughout the 300 series. Sounds like the rod may have been made for low profile bait casters or a spinning reel. as Tiger is a spinning reel. You may need to take your reel to a sporting goods store that sells rods and match it up to the right pole

The first year Penn Mag 10 doesn't have that anti-reverse override switch....Approx 2000 made that year per Mystic Parts

That is correct. I often get asked why a person's Mag 10 doesn't have the switch and yes, that is the answer - there was an upgraded engineering change made early in the production cycle to give it the additional feature - Thanks - Dennis

Are there any idler gears with bearings? I use mine for surf fishing, looking for ways to speed it up a but still keep the levelwind.

Not that I am aware of. The more things you put on the reel, the slower it will go, so any level wind will struggle with speed. I like the Shimano and Daiwa reels that use the gear side drive for the worm gear. When. you go into free spool, it disconnect the level wind and allows faster spool turn. The problem with that design is that the line still needs to go through the line guide, so there is drag there. Thanks for asking - Dennis

The Penn 10 mag I have doesn't have the anti reverse override, would it be an older model or were they available either way?

Yes - it is an older model. It is also rarer. Penn switched the design early in production, so yours is one of the first of that model - Thanks for asking - Dennis
