@@2ndChanceTackle I couldn't get the chrome sideplate to come off. Had to soak it wd40 and then pry it off. I spent about 4 1/2 hours working on it but I finally got it all together. I remembered how far mine used to cast when new. Hopefully I'll get those distances again now that it's serviced. I've landed hundred's of big carp with it and a few nice cats. Of those hundreds of carp, I can only remember losing 2 and that's no fish story. With the extra smooth drag they just couldn't get away. I'm on my third pawl and my second worm gear. Back in the 80's when I bought the reel and had to replace the pawl, Penn sent me 2 for free. I think the longer distance casting was the product of the USA made mono we were able to buy back in those days.

@2ndchancetackle - Dennis, Excellently detailed and descriptive video as usual! Given currently available lines what would be your preferred brand/type/weight you would use on Penn 10 for large fish? Also, could you refer some make/model of modern reels which would approach the functionality of Penn 10 and their pros and cons?
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
I would use up to 50 pound braid for this reel. Today's Shimano Cardiff, Corvalus and Calcutta would be comparable. Those would be closest. Hopefully we can talk soon - Dennis

Dennis. I stripped down my Penn 10 watching this video and found that the pinion gear doesn't slide off the shaft. I had to take out the four screws from the bridge to get the spool out as a result. It's very clean and spins on the shaft with no problem. It's going to be very hard to reassemble the reel if I can't slide the pinion into the yoke separately. I don't want to force the pinion off the shaft. Any suggestions?
@2ndChanceTackle Жыл бұрын
You need two remove the pinion gear for reassembly. Soak it is a penetrating oil. It is rusted on. You cannot twist it off, because it has a slot that grips the spool. Let the oil sit overnight and then try prying it using a screwdriver on opposite sides to push up and out. Be careful not to damage the spool. If that fails, the only other answer is heat. I use a plumbers torch, but you can also use a grill starter, it will just take longer to heat it through. The spool shaft and the pinion gear are different metals and will expand differently using heat. That usually breaks the seal and lets you complete the task. If you try this, please be careful. It is an open flame and hot to handle - Dennis

Excellent videos Dennis! Just recently purchased one of these and seems to be in good condition except for when I reel in line I hear a slight scraping noise. My first thought was that the spool is scraping so I backed off on the spool tension knob and the noise seems to go away a little but not completely. Do you have any thoughts on how I could fix this? Thank you for your time
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
That spool may be warped, or the inside of the reel may just need some grease and oil. Start by removing the spool tension knob and putting grease or oil in there. It may may a difference. -Thanks for asking - Dennis

I have one that I just purchased but it doesn’t have the anti reverse lever option. Where those only made limited time or do I have an oddball year?
@2ndChanceTackle2 жыл бұрын
The earlier model 10's did not include the over-ride. I believe that was added in year two of the production runs. Your reel is among the first made - Thanks for asking - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle I also have one without the anti-reverse lever. Is it possible to purchase the parts and convert it?

Excellent video Dennis! I have a question. I just got one of these in for service, disassembled, cleaned, lubed, and reassembled, but now it feels like it's catching somewhere as I crank. When I take off the crank side and turn it with no spool, it spins nice and smooth. Is it possible something is out of alignment? What are your thoughts?
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
If it was working properly before the service, then chances are that you will need to take the side plate off again and recheck it. My first guess would be that the earned washer may have slipped out of the main gear when you went to reseat the bridge or that the anti-reverse dog is mis-set. If the reel was not working when you got it is, then there is a good chance that the frame is bent, usually at the reel seat, or that the spool is bent. I would check each - Good luck - Dennis
@brasshnkey4 жыл бұрын
@@2ndChanceTackle Thank you for the reply. It was working when I got it. I will check the eared washer like you were saying. Thanks again.

Hello Dennis, I went to look at the plastic gear and I saw that it had about 9 or 8 broken teeth, could this interfere with anything?
@2ndChanceTackle10 ай бұрын
If the teeth are missing, your worm gear will not turn all of the time and the line guide will not advance properly. The idler gear needs to be replaced - Dennis
@BeniEditze10 ай бұрын
Dennis, do you know what could be the problem with my penn 10 guide? It doesn't go up or down
@2ndChanceTackle10 ай бұрын
It is likely the broken plastic idler gear that you described. That won't drive the worm gear if it is missing teeth. If it isn't that, then the line guide pawl would likely need to be replaced
@BeniEditze10 ай бұрын
Dennis, can you tell me a website where I can buy this plastic gear?

Hi again Dennis I looked on eBay for the Abu Garcia 7000 would it be wise to pay more for the older reel then a new one ? PS the one I get will get a lot of use for five to fifty pound blue catfish .
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
The older ones have a better reputation than the newer ones, but of course condition is everything. It the older one has not been maintained, then go new. In the end, there isn't that much different and Abu still makes a nice reel. Dennis

Depending on where and how I am fishing, here is what I like. If I am on a boat, I like the Daiwa Sealine 50H, old school or the Shimano Tekota, new school. I generally use open face conventional reels when casting from shore. Old school Penn Squidder, new school mostly Shimano or Tica like the Toriun or Cayman.
