I have an old ditty named The Gum-tree Canoe. Written by David Hartford, printed in 1883. Different words to the ones you sing. 3 verses. You may talk of your pleasure, but give unto me Afloat on the Murray in the bark of a tree: You may boast of your pleasures and trips to the Zoo, But Australia for me in her Gumtree Canoe. The main thing with this song is it exactly matches the kind of rhythm of the rowed boat of a determined person. Not someone wanting to to break records, but someone out fishing or delivering goods to the Confederate soldiers/fleet. If I ever get to visit the southern states I'll be wanting to play this song whilst exploring the Mississippi River in a small craft.

Just now noticed the palmetto on the banjo head. NEAT! Don't see many gum trees anymore. In a way, it’s sad that this isn’t as popular as the other tunes of the time period. It’s a nice romance ballad. Though, in another way, it’s nice that it isn’t as well-known as the others, since it saves it from being too terribly corrupted from its original form. It hasn’t gone through the multiple adaptations that “Listen to the Mockingbird” or “Dixie” have, which have diluted the original lyrics to the point of parody. It’s nice, it’s wholesome, and it makes for a great song to sing to your true love.
