Man, do you know hard hard it is to find thorough tutorials on youtube. Thank you so much for this

You're welcome! I found the same problem which is what led me to drill down on these tricky-difficult fundamentals my students were struggling to learn from books

Hi, i want to thnak you as your series of videos is the best resource one coudl find about the topic on YT(given some prior knowledge). You explain the concepts in such an easy to understand way that it hurts to watch other videos :) You definitely deserve more views. I wish I had foudn your videos before investing some money on gumroad tutorials. Thanks again.

Thank you for the video! I really like the insight of using the combination of several reference units in the ground plane in order to find the position of another vanishing point in the horizon line. I have been trying to find some method to find elevation vanishing points away from the center, and I use that same method together with inverse trigonometric functions in order to find different elevations in two point perspective. Never had thought of using it in the horizon line though.

Yeah, the more you really get your head around this stuff the more you realize how powerful the HL is! What an amazing discovery they made; an amazing tool. I'm a little confused by "elevation" and "vanishing points". I think you're meaning vertical heights? Vanishing points will always be on the Horizon Line... well, unless you do sloped planes, objects, staircases, roof pitches, etc., then you can have vanishing points up in the air above or below the HL as needed to maintain the slope of the plane. But for heights, one easy way to work is just through relative accuracy. So for example if your horizon line is at 5 feet, then if you draw a vertical edge anywhere in perspective, say far away, then the distance from the ground plane (whatever you mark as "the ground") to the HL will be that same number, 5 feet, so far away objects or things I need to float above the HL, say 12', then I can measure vertically, to the HL is 5, take that same measurement above the HL and that's now 10 above ground, add a little less than another half and you're at approximately 12 feet. Same logic if working in metric. This is so much easier to explain in person in class! Good luck and enjoy the journey!

what kind of mechanical pencils are those the red and blue ones?

I just use mechanical pencils with color leads from Pentel. I wrap the pencils in color electrical tape so I can find them easily!

Why the measuring points? Why not strike lines between the VP and the marks on the Horizontal Measuring Line.
@LaForteDailyDemos
@LaForteDailyDemos 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry I didn't see your question sooner! Without the measuring points then the grid doesn't compress properly for distance, as it should, needs to. Many grids are wrong in this way, in fact, the "grid" feature in Sketchbook for tablets/mobile, is wrong. It's ok for mapping out a general understanding of the ground plane and VPs, but doesn't take into consideration foreshortening, therefore can't be used in any meaningful way for scaling objects into the distance.

How do I know how far should I put the vanishing points?

Honestly, it's trial and error. It'll depend on the size paper you use, what you want to focus on, an product object or architecture exterior or interior space, etc. and so this is very difficult to define until you play around some and also have a specific intention. This video is meant to be general enough that it covers the concept principles and can be adapted from there.
