Wow cool car. My first car was the redesigned 1982 sedan. It had a 4 spd automatic But no passenger mirror. Lol. I bought it in 1988 from my aunt when I was 16. It had 90k miles and I gave her $4000 for it. I Drove it thru high school until 1991 and a lady pulled out in front of me and totaled it. So glad you posted this. Brings back old Honda memories.

@@marvib4850 It probably well-and-truly did her car, those Accords were pretty tough cars for Japanese metal of the period. The were massively popular in banger racing in the UK as, even when they were too rotten to have a chance of going on the road, they were still plenty tough enough to absolutely massacre the Ford and Vauxhall stuff of the same, and even the next period of cars. A guy I knew, who was into banger racing, largely because he ran a garage and tended to accumulate old cars that were too far gone to have further useful life, ran an Accord 4-door of this era in 3 events, that was 9 basically demolition derby races and won all of them. That old Honda killed a LOT of other cars. He "retired" it after the third event, partly to give the opposition a chance but mostly because he was threatened with being excluded if he entered the same car again lol...

You gave her new car money for a car with 90k and 6 years on it? Sorry pal but your Aunt scammed the shit out of you, these cars sold for around 7,000 when new and a new Civic could be purchased for as low as 6500 in the late 1980s... If you *really* wanted a new car for 4,000 you could have bought a mid-range Yugo, a GVX even with the larger engine if you wanted to spend a little extra!

Greetings: In 1981 I bought new in same color in a four door. It was the first car ever to pay 10K new. And dealership would not come down on price. Mind was a 5 speed transmission with air conditioning and power windows and locks. Only issues was a water pump. We kept that Honda Accord up to 1988. In my opinion it was the true beginning of Honda today. Take a look at the technology of the day. In 1986 my wife purchased a two door Honda Accord LXI 5 Speed transmission. We have been a Honda Accord family ever since. Thank you

I had an 82' (gold paint) that had the same engine with the 5 speed manual transmission. When I bought it in 97' she had 29k+ on the clock. When she was parked in 06' (parked due to throwing a timing belt and bending a valve) there was just over 315k on her. Scrappers came on to the property where it was parked and destroyed the hood not knowing how it actually opened and took the copper/brass radiator and various other parts. Due to all of the damage done, I had to let her go to the salvage yard. It was one of the last that was built and shipped from Japan before production was moved to the US from what I could find. I still have the original key and the shift knob!! Mine didn't have the buzzer for the key in ignition though, it was a faint bell/dinger. I miss that car and all the road trips we had together! Thank you posting this and taking me back a bit!!!!!

I just bought an '82 hatch a month ago. Super clean and original, blue on blue, and a 5 speed manual. It even has the factory accessory louvers on the rear window. '82 would be the first year of the second gen of these cars, but it still looks very similar to the first gen, though a little less rounded. I'm currently learning manual in it.

I had an '81 4-door Accord 5 speed. It was this green color. Fun to drive. Had interior replaced and kept in top condition. Was my first car in high school. Would take car out and shampoo. LOL. Wish I would have kept it but it needed a lot of engine work. AC compressor seized up. Needed a new rack for the steering and had severe oil leak.

I had two of these when I was younger. A silver/burgundy five speed sedan, and a blue/blue automatic hatchback. I loved that sedan like you would not believe. Getting another one and restoring it is my dream car. Definitely hard to find and getting pricey when you do find them. Edit: Oh, this car will definitely do above 60. They're so light that little 70 hp engine would still get them moving. So light that having four adult dudes in the hatchback on a winding road was utterly terrifying. I got bumped by a school bus in the hatchback once. It cracked the tail light. Pushed the damn car across the road, but the only damage was the tail light. The last one I saw, honestly, was probably 15 years ago. Someone in the town I lived in at the time had a tan hatchback.

I have a 1979 Honda Accord Sedan, which from the front is almost identical to this little car, including many of the engine components... It has been in mothballs for almost 20 years. I hope to get it running again someday. Automatic transmission... Was a really fun car to drive. The emissions on it were excellent - was practically blowing bubbles. I think the fuel pump went out on it.

I had a blue 81 Accord for a few years way back in 88. I loved it, but It was pretty badly abused before I got it, the clutch chattered, the electrical was a bit burnt up and the transmission lost 5th, then reverse. At that point I junked it and got a 86 Civic Si, which was a supremely fun car.

1986 .. that was the last time. I grew up with that car, in that color with that cloth green interior, although it was a 4 door sedan. Belonged to my sister-in-law who bought it new in 1980 and she said she had to wait extra for delivery to the dealer, because she specifically requested it, because she has green eyes. Very cool story actually.

Had an 80 model for several years. Brown and Rusty . I got it off a guy for 250 bucks without an engine. Or transmission. Picked up an import engine and trans from japan for 375 dollars. Go it back on the road for under a thousand dollars. I probably put a hundred thousand on that thing in about 3 years. Hated that 3 speed but it was better than the 2 speed that came from japan.. Cruising the interstate, it turned 4200 rpm constantly. Top speed was about eighty five. Right at the redline. Had a lot of fun in that raggedy car and one day it went into the crusher. There were 10 possible torque converters for that car, and I could not find the right one. Was looking to turn it into a five speed , but could never get all the parts together. Oh well. Cool video, ty.

I use to own and drive a 1982 Honda Acord about 7 or 8 years ago I replaced the cracked head on it and then I drove it to town and the radiator had a rubber seal in pit cock that was ruined when I took it to the radiator shop during the replacement of the head gasket long story short it ran out of water and I didnt realize it and cracked the head again. That was one tough cookie to take apart and put back together I marked all the lines with tape and a marker. It ran great but it ran out of water again and blew the head again. I had the salvage come and get it. And it was in mint condition my grandmothers car and she kept it like new. Before the head cracked I got a couple of hundred thousand miles out of it.

I owned one, a 1981 Accord 2 door hatchback 5 speed in brown. I believe mine had a 1600 cc engine, as it was sold in Canada. It got good gas mileage but it had no power. Passing a truck on the highway took a lot of planning. The suspension was soft compared to a VW scirocco of the same era. The E brake cable seized every year but the rest of the car was reliable. I enjoyed driving the car and kept it about 6 years.

My dad had a 4 door '81 Accord that same color. As I recall, they offered only three colors for each model at that point. The "factory A/C" was always dealer installed option. Ours had the manual transmission and was sluggish because there was a cam lubrication issue with these cars and the cam lobes wore down with the miles. Badly rusted out in Massachusetts by 1990, 29 years ago.

Anyone had the time to read "War and Peace" , a novel by the Russian author Leo Tolstoy? If you have, then please read my comment post here. My Accord Details: Purchased on 01/26/1981, from Honda City Honda, in Baltimore MD. A/C, 5 speed manual, LX hatchback, Michelin steel belted radial tires, rust prevention undercoating, color "Hempstead Green", paid $7,800, digital clock that does not make noice. Nice stereo, Blaupunkt am/fm stereo cassette with 2 speakers mounted on door panels. 30 MPG when driving from Virginia to Long Island NY. Purchased it new because my original 1977 silver Accord Hatchback was totaled by a drunk driver 17 year old girl, after attending and leaving a "Outlaws-Foghat" concert at the Capital Center in Landover MD. While waiting in traffic (at a standstill), to yield onto Interstate I-495 northbound, she rear ended me at 35-45 MPH, leaving the venue. Yes, hospital stay was my next stop and so for her too. Man she messed up her face really bad. Stereo system enhancements: Alpine AM/FM Stereo Cassette Radio with DBX noice reduction ($700). Alpine stereo equalizer with 20 watts per channel (mounted under driver site seat) to power the two front speakers. Alipine stereo 40 watts per channel (mounted under driver site seat) to power the 4 rear radio shack speakers mounted (wired in parallel) on a wood panel resting on hatchback upper panel. Alpine digital time delay unit for concert hall effects. Original Sony CD Discman player ($300) mounted on stick shift side panel (removed and placed in glove box when parking). When parking the car, the panel of 4 speakers were placed behind the rear seats under hatch panel, to prevent visibilty and theft. Yes, believe it or not, a Sanyo BetaMax portable tape recorder/player ($800) for continuos 5 hours of high quality stereo LP and CD playback, using a manual remote control. Music playback from Virginia to New York without commercial interruptions (1985), before stuff like SiriusXM radio came about. Radio Shack wireless radio alarm paging system for front hood, rear hatch, and side doors (vibration sensor based) to prevent car theft and stereo system theft. Had 2 attempted break-ins thwarted, because thieves did not know my wireless pager whent off, alerting me to them, once at 3:00 AM in the morning. Had to replace passenger door lock as a result. It's amazing what a large aluminum baseball bat can do to convince them to flee the seen. These days, you need a concealed 9MM pistol on your waste, to accomplish the same result. All in all, over $2,000 for the stereo setup. Finally, my 1981 is in my car port waiting minor repairs, covered with a car cover, It needs a carburetor float replaced (for the 3rd time) , master break cylinder replaced (for second time) and 2 drive shafts (optional right now, CV boot cover ripped). Warning! , next stuff is not PC. Not more than 2 weeks and less than 500 miles after buying this new car I was side swiped by a female driver taking her grandfather somewhere. She pulled out of a left turn lane and side swiped my car while I was driving past her from the front fender and all the way back to the rear quarter panel. $800 dollar repair by GEICO. Not my fault, but insurance rate increase, You got to love this stuff. The Car has been hit an additional times by 3 females in 38 years. Rear ended left corner, bumper replaced, rear right side quarter panel dented. I just pocket the insurance money, no repairs. So, I decided not to purchase any new cars since, just used, and guess what, no other accidents! Now that I'm retired, this is going to be a long term body repair project. The car just will not die. Rust work yes, but workable. This all brings back fond memories for me . . . can't let this green machine go ... has antique plates now. Thanks for the video. Cheers.

I bought a 1981 3 door hatch in New Zealand. It had the updated 1802cc motor in it. NZ had more older English cars and also Holdens (GM) and Fords from Australia. The new Japanese smaller cars like the Accord and Civic were so much more well built and full of innovation than the English cars of the day. My first car in 1970was a second hand Ford 1955 Prefect 100E 4 door 1200cc. Vacuum wipers 3 speed gearbox. floor mounted headlight dimmer switch. I had to use an oil can with hydraulic fluid to top up the front shock absorbers. A great time to be in.

I had a 1981 Honda accord lx 5-speed in a darker green. Loved it but someone pulled out in front of me and I totaled it. Mine had a set of sweet black louvers on the back.

Awesome car, these are virtually non existent in my neck of the rust belt, they dissolved like alka-seltzers once the winter road salts got them.

Currently own a 1982 accord sedan in silver with the blue interior. It has only 82,000 kilometers on it and runs like a dream. Sad to say it is rusty and has a hole in the floor

I used to own a 2nd gen Accord facelifted model and carburetored.Mine was JDM unit so the vacuum hoses is the same as in the video while our locally assembled model has fewer vacuum hoses.Emission perhaps?

I have a 1979 MK2 Ford Escort Ghia 1600cc Sedan With a similar carburetor with automatic choke, it came like this from the factory, but is not electric. Webber Bressel Made in Spain. Is like a clock, runs great in every Gear and speed, it has a 4 speed manual.

dont touch that clock !! you leave that alone. those are sounds of when america was great. honda was trying to tell its new customers back then that if you had bought that american front wheel drive car, it would have trans and engine noise like our custom dashclock that reminds you of why you made a good purchase. the buick analog clocks had a second hand that tic very softly, then at 10,000 miles no tic no more. no children drivers allowed.
