Discussable. It probably started earlier, but the most common example is from the 1950's car design when it went for the "forward look" program. This means that things started to be made just to appeal to the eye. In other words, sell the same car but make it look cooler. That design died out as another fad, but the idea of facelifting cars goes on to sell same old shit but more expensive. Just like with cell phones. Especially flagship models.

Everything looks the same now, and the fact that your colour choices are white, black, or 185,000 shades of gray/silver, that gets pretty boring too. I miss the old bold looks of the 1990's when all the cool cars were teal, electric blue, lemon yellow, or teal. And did I mention teal?

I'm from the UK and my third car was a Honda Accord, 1984. It was way back in the early 90s I had it. Really reliable motor. Don't see any on the roads over here anymore....just all the modern, no character crap. Where are the classic cars of the future?

My uncle has an 84 he keeps in his barn for when he goes out drinking on Saturdays. He says if he can operate the stick shift then he's ok to drive. Yeah I know, he's kind of a dope. Every bit of rubber on that thing is dry rotted, but it some how keeps going down the road. Only had to replace the water pump, epoxy a cracked fuel pump housing, and get a new battery in the last 10 years. You know Hondas are reliable when the fuel pump housing cracks from age and heat and the pump is still going strong. Edited to add: I know what you mean about modern cars not having much character. It's funny that that was one of the complaints about Japanese cars when they first started popping up here in the States in large numbers, that they were boxy and plain and too practical looking. I never saw that, I've always dug their styling. Hopefully a generation from now there will be a couple models that withstand the styling test of time, I'm just not seeing it right now...

Hello, just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy watching your videos. Two of my buddies owned Hondas back in high school: Chris had an N600 sedan and Mark had the coupe. Being rich kids from Malibu, their parents BOUGHT them as gifts, brand new (I drove an old '58 VW Beetle, and girls still wanted rides!). The tiny Honda was super popular in SoCal, with a cult, much like the Austin Mini: wild paint jobs (Japanese flag on the roof, of course, in homage to the Mini's with their union jacks), mag wheels, big carbs, straight pipes. Too bad Honda doesn't bring them back! As for Isetta: my math teacher in 7th grade drove one to school every day! Fun to watch the front end open up, like a giant egg shell! Los Angeles in the 60's and early 70's was the mecca of bizarre imported cars: seeing Steve McQueen in his Ferrarri or Porsche 356 or his Mini Cooper S on Sunset Blvd was not unusual. And of course, Mercedes 300SL and Shelby Cobras were not scarce like they are today. Subaru 360's were used as tiny race cars on a dirt track, and crashed into each other. You could buy an old Maserati Ghibli for under $10K. And of course, Fiats everywhere, and French cars were common (my dad's buddy owned FIVE Citroen DS21 Pallas sedans! Parked next to them was a Berkeley Sports SA492). It saddens me that MY kids didn't get to live through the 60's renaissance of cool and unique imported cars. But safety and smog killed those now extinct unicorns. Best wishes from Veneta, Oregon. p.s. there was a huge cult following around the Honda Accord: my aunt owned FIVE Honda Accords, starting from her first one in 1978).

At the time we were very proud of its modern looks and Honda heritage.

Those are the original seats. The 4 door back seats always crack due to the window heat. Replaced the panels in 3 of my originals. The key ignition switches always go out due to the amount of amps directly on the contacts. This happens on all Hondas up to the late 80s.

I had a 1978 version of this car with a 5-speed. The CVCC carb was so tricky and complex that a normal owner could only screw it up if trying DIY tune-up. It was probably the car I've owned which was the most fun to drive. By the standard of the time, it was quite trouble-free even with the overly complex fuel system. Letting a grandson play shadetree mechanic on this car should have been a death sentence; they got lucky. (Their metallic silver paint seems to have held up. After 13 years, the roof on mine was going fast. That color didn't hold up well on a wide variety of brands from that time.)

Had one up until '92. Got it from a family that was the original buyer, but went thru several generations of that family as the primary users. By the time it got to the grandson 10 years later, it was pretty neglected. That 3-door hatchback configuration is sooo "70s and '80s. It is so incredibly versatile. With the hatch open, you can haul a refrigerator in it. During the times you don't need to schlepp large household appliances, it's just an economical car of the right size. Two doors make it easy for anybody without a brood to get in and out, and there is no Doric B-pillar to obstruct your view. Looking at the instrument cluster, the three throwback items are the odometer that was not expected to go much past 100 000 miles, then start over. The DOT=mandated speedo only reads to 85 mph, with the 55 mark thought to deserve a place of prominence. The digital clock is right in keeping with the kind of alarm clocks that were on everyone's nightstands during the era, with a gear-driven counter that flipped the numbers over. What a touching piece of nostalgia. Mine was a 5-speed. The long gearing and the light weight of the car gave you pretty good fuel economy around town and on the freeway, even if the under-hood technology (carbs, wires, cap and rotor) was on the way out. The light weight also made it easy to just not bother with power steering leaks. You just needed it little bit of extra muscle maneuvering into a tight spot. Any other time it didn't matter. It was always said that with the founder of Honda having started his career as a mechanic that these cars would be easy to work on. Hogwash, poppycock and horsefeathers! Nothing was easy to get to. A water pump replacement was a trying experience. Oil filter changes were made much easier if you took the added step of removing the spark plugs. The filter itself is only accessible with the smaller-than-standard steel-band wrench. The front-hinged hood is an anomaly among manufacturers and for a reason. Even Scotty K.had to resort to some trickery to get a CVCC valve back into place. Seeing these cars of my youth on the street today is just about as rare as seeing a Model T. Technology marches on, and there are things that I wouldn't want to be without on a car today that a '79 Honda Accord simply didn't have. But remember, every time we move on to new things, we lose something in the process.

Great video bud. I was a wild teenager with a set of wheels so I was out everyday and night chasing the girls through Pensacola Florida. That's was a happening place in the mid 80s. Good little car, the only problem that I had with it was the brake rotors needed to be replaced. They had worn too thin and would warm when hot. I wish I had had the CVCC engine. Apparently that engine was ahead of it's time. It was a lean burn engine, with a pre-chamber in which a rich mixture was ignited by the spark plug and subsequently would ignite the lean mixture in the main cylinder. The fuel economy was better than its competitors for several years.

Funny, that was my first car in 1990, same color and interior. Was sitting in a farmers field for 3 years, had some rear quarter damage. Paid $50 cash, and $10 for a junkyard battery. Drove it 3 years, replaced one turn signal bulb and 3 oil changes in all that time. Clutch was starting to go, so sold it for $500. Should be still driving it, my retirement account would probably be quadruple the size. These $55k F-150's every 4-5 years are killing me....

Had a 1982 Civic new. Remember all those old Hondas, they were great cars except NO resistance to rust, and if one of the dozens of vacuum hoses on the carbureted versions failed, it was hell to find it.

Wow! i love that car!

Hondas never die. Keep in mind that Honda is an Engine company that also happens to manufacture cars. This is the reason why they last and are Soo reliable

Eh not really. They're known to have transmission issues, especially on their V6's. Most cars can last for a long time if you take care of them.

Honda Accord is the greatest car ever made. I’m on my 6th one. My first car was a 91 and I now have a 13 V6 coupe. As fast as a mustang and better in every way.

I love the 1976-1993 Hondas, but the 1976-1984 models are so hard for me to find.
