Definitely an F head. Army called their version M38A1. They can run flat out in high range about 70-75. Drove one in Army 1957 as Motorpool parts specialist. A simple and rugged runner. Will turn over if pushed hard enough.

It was called the Willys Jeep station wagon, and came in 2-door, 4-door and panel van models. I remember riding in one as a kid. They were Super rugged, could take tons of abuse, and were very dependable - but not necessarily comfortable, as they were essentially trucks, with truck springs.

For some time after the 1949 introduction of a four-wheel drive option, the 2WD was sold as "Station Wagon", while the 4WD was marketed as "Utility Wagon".[4] The 4WD Willys Jeep Wagon is often considered the first production sport utility vehicle.

My family had one of these when I was a kid, along with a pickup with a Miner" body in the back. It had seating along the sides. We always called these "Jeep Station Wagons." The wagon had a four cylinder engine and the truck had a six. All of this was in Mexico. Perhaps of interest is that in Mexico City I saw an Isetta flatbed truck. The rear wheels' track was the sam as the front and it had a differential. It is the only one I have ever seen.

To me, that front wheel hub looked like the sort that manually you need to switch in and out. You need to fold those levers out, give them half a turn and then fold them back in again. I recall with the early British 4 cylinder Landrovers in order to give them more "go" and fuel economy on highway use, a popular aftermarket fitment was a similar type of "freewheeling" front hub. (Later they became standard and some types are auto-engaging) That meant that the front half axles and front diff didn't need to be whizzing around when in normal 2 wheeldrive. If there was a chance you were gonna need 4wd sometime soon, then, before you got to the mud/snow/sand whatever, then stop and lock in those front hubs (they can be fiddly and you may need to rock the car forward and back a little) Then you can select 4 wd on your auxilliary gearstick and know that you're really getting drive to those front wheels also ! I've heard of people being bogged in, out in the bush, and when rescued, they had the transfer gearbox selector in 4 wd, but the front hubs were still set to freewheeling, so no drive power was getting to the front wheels.

Exactly correct!

These were called locking hubs. We had them on our ‘64 IH Scout 4X4. Yes you sometimes had to rock the vehicle slightly to get them to engage. And both front wheels had to be locked or unlocked otherwise damage could occur.

I hopped it, killed it and bounced it by setting on a boat cushion but got it there. That was 61 years ago and I still have it in pristine condition with 36,000 miles. Drive it often when warm. No top but it does have a Jeep heater. Numerous people want to buy it but not for sale.

I spotted one similar to this in Fillmore, CA. It was two wheel drive and called a Jeepster. It was for sale in front of a repair shop and in talking to the owner it had been "hot rodded" with some Buick v6. He was pretty proud of it but it was too much & I would have preferred to do my own mods so it didn't come together. Pretty cool! I hope the customer gives it new life and hands it down to his kids some day.
@Al-thecarhistorian4 жыл бұрын
What you came across was a later ‘60’s Jeepster that was developed to compete with the IH Scout and Ford Bronco. The old Buick V6 had been purchased by Kaiser Willys and was used in the “new” Jeepster. The original Willys Overland Jeepster ran from ‘48 thru ‘51.

The cool, different, or in this case rare 4x4s seem to find their way to you...I wonder if the owner knows what he's got. This is going back a few years, but I saw a similar Willys (although a frame -off resto) fetch about $50k at Barrett-Jackson. Of course, he just might rather have it for the sentimental value. I look forward to any videos on this classic.

The flathead 134.2 cubic inch motor was rated at 60 hp. The one you have in the wagon is rated around 72 hp. Both are good motors. I had the flathead in a 1946 CJ2A and the motor you have in a 1957 CJ5.

These vehicles are prone to wearing the shaft that the brake and clutch ride on. You can re bush the pedal. This will no fully correct this but I came up with a permanent solution. Cut the shaft off that runs through the Chassis while leaving the part through the rails. Use a drill to clear out the ID of that shaft. I made a stainless steel shaft then with a threaded portion and a smooth on the outside of the rail to hold it in place. The portion which was cut off previously has very thin grease grooves cut into it to trap grease when it is reassembled. The portion on the inside of the Chassis rails is the exact length matching what was cut off previously with a washer and cotter pin to keep every thing in place. I placed felt washers or maybe it was indoor outdoor carpet to bush up any pedal caps. Fully grease it up then you are good for the life of the vehicle. It will outlast the next 2 owners.

These were called the Jeep station wagon if 2 wheel drive and utility wagon if 4 wheel drive. Willys is pronounced WILLUS. I pronounced it WILLIES incorrectly for years! Basic, hard-working all-American vehicle. If Consumer Reports was evaluating it, they would not recommend it because it doesn’t have forward collision warning or automatic emergency braking. Oh, and no back-up camera. But it would get points for having a manual gear box!

These are pretty bullet proof compared to Jeep's made in the past 15 years. Since FIAT took over, most Jeep models feature FIAT power trains that as local automotive expert (Scotty Kilmer on KZbin) are pure junk.
