Have you ever wondered how to make a faux wood beam mantel, or maybe even wondered how to make a floating mantel, or install one?
Our fireplace has only been on our To Do list for 5 years now 😂 so we thought it was time to getter done! Come see how we made a beautiful faux wood beam mantel without visible seams, at a fraction of the cost of a real, thick and heavy beam!

I love how KZbin comes up with a video of EXACTLY what I had planned to do. Except I am putting it right over the thin painted mantel. Thanks!😊

SO glad our video fits your project so perfectly! That's gotta make things easier on your end! As we've continued to improve our DIY skills since this video was filmed, there is one thing we'd do differently to make this project easier! Lay out all the pieces of the mantel box (inside surfaces facing down) and but the mitered edges together. Then add painters tape to cover the seam where they meet. Then when you add glue and fold in the edges to secure with the brad nailer, the tape will help hold things together! 🙌🏻 Hope that helps even more. Good luck with your project. Be sure to let us know how it turns out.

Hi, thanks for your video, it was great. Question, I have been working with Pine and started using a conditioner for the wood so it takes the stain better. Do you use the wood conditioner? thanks again Shelley
@2thesunnyside

Hi Shelley, thanks for watching our tutorial. No we haven't used the wood conditioner, but yes, it will definitely help the wood take the stain more evenly.

Great suggestion! We're always learning how to improve our videos, thank you for your suggestion. (Sometimes we get into project mode and only think to show our viewers what we're working on. We did a whole series on the fireplace and were trying to reveal other areas at different times, so we probably thought we'd be revealing too much if we took a step back.) You can see full images of the entire fireplace and surround in this blog post: www.2thesunnyside.com/brick-veneer-fireplace-surround/ And all of the other videos from this series can be found in this playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLliomZ89tP0F0KZiqheIaxS9GZ-r1CWbu Hope you have a blessed Holiday season and enjoy the finished fireplace look! Thanks again for your suggestion! We really appreciate it!

Nice job, you can use the round shaft on a screw driver to work your edges over to tighten up your miters.

This is exactly how I imagined making my mantel and I hope to do it soon! Did you fill the screw holes after attaching the box to the cleat? I'm sure that part isn't super visible, but I'm trying to consider all parts of this!
@2thesunnyside
@2thesunnyside 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching Katherine! No we didn't fill in those holes. The detail molding above the mantel covered them. Hope that helps, and good luck with your project! You'll have to let us know how it turns out 😀

Hi there! Love this! Did you use oil or water base stain?
@2thesunnyside
@2thesunnyside 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Syde! We used oil based stains by varathane and mixwax. We used a couple shades to create our own custom color. To see each that we used as well as proportions, you can get more info from our blog post here: www.2thesunnyside.com/faux-wood-beam-mantel/ Links to each stain: rstyle.me/+_nLSHw3qnBOwyKhI9cUo4A rstyle.me/+yKkbJjWm1y8mFudGBhj7RQ rstyle.me/+sk5uePmvk42hK3B1ZCF2Jw Thanks again for watching. I love this but I just want to put it over my existing fireplace mantel...do you think that is possible and how?
@2thesunnyside
@2thesunnyside 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, we're glad you like our video. The existing mantle would act as the cleat, so you could totally design the faux beam to fit. Then you'd just secure it into the existing mantle.

How to you cut a miter edge down the long side of the board? The short sides are easy, but how do you make sure the long sides are equal?
@2thesunnyside
@2thesunnyside 2 жыл бұрын
Great question Kemi! There may be an easier or better method than what we did since we're not professional wood workers by any means...but we set the blade on the table saw at the angle we needed and then secured the fence to the table saw at the width of the wood. Then we were able to slide the long boards through the table saw to get the mitered cut. Hope that helps 😀 (So the fence kept the wood snugged up right where we needed to cut)

You could have used blue tape to butt them side to side together and then glued the edges and then fold. Then you can tack it with 16 GA.

I know...looking back at our filming we should've shown more. Since we were filming several videos for our fireplace series we didn't want to show too much of the other details coming up in other videos. Here's a link to one of them. It should start around the 9 minute mark where it will show the mantel more. kzbin.info/www/bejne/en2aoH17nqyjrbc
