Spoiler warning: Shae's experience of leaving the family and coming back connected with me on too many levels. I could feel her anxiety about her failure in a foreign country because she fought hard to go there. I think its a matter of being part of the diaspora away from home and family in a different culture. Theres thousands of examples of people settled perfectly away from the family because they didnt want to continue within the family business or legacy, but came back in an instant if the family needed them. I suppose it is a eastern thing or a diaspora/immigrant thing. I completely connected with Shae's experience.

Nerdy take from a Godfather and a Green bone Nerd: I understand that there is need in humans to compare art to something that was created in the past. However, I sincerely believe that when people say that it is Godfather in a modern setting with magic, they are wrong 😎. That is unfair to the Green Bone Saga and the Godfather. Ofcourse we can crowbar some elements to match it to Godfather but honour, turf war, revenge, family legacy, loyalty, organized crime etc are not just the purview of the Godfather. Anything that has gangster elements does not automatically make the Godfather. There are several other reasons but you know its a comments section. I know its finicky, pedantic and mighty be an unnecessary take 🙂 but hey its fun to be finicky and pedantic. If Fonda Lee her self calls it that, than I am completely wrong. I bow at the feet for the author. love you guys

That was very interesting because I always felt like this book is very unanimously loved, I even remember on Sanderson's podcast, when they were talking about the best living authors, Dan Wells put Fonda Lee at number 1. Maybe it's one of those stories where if it fits your taste, you absolutely love it. If it doesn't, you don't really care for it. I personally have never been compelled by crime/mafia dramas and never plan on reading it, but I had this perception that is very good. So it was very interesting to hear from you guys.

So, just finished the review. Green Bone Saga is my favourite series after beating out Sanderson and Abercrombie as some of my favourites. I will preface though that The Godfather has been my favourite movies since I was a kid so I heavily lean towards this stuff. SPOILERS BELOW! I felt Lan's death worked for me, both for shock value and because Hilo isn't suited to the role of Pillar and has to move into it, it made things so interesting of will he be able to change enough to save the family and the clan, without Lan's death it would have been just a clan vs clan was with some arguments between siblings of how best to handle the war. I do however think your criticism is valid and that having Lan struggling with the SN1 from much earlier on would have been interesting, maybe even causing some arguments between him and others, including maybe Hilo and Shae arguing over stepping in vs not stepping in and them both knowing about Lan's issue. Anden could have still had the guilt just simply by him being there that night and seeing Lan use a lot of SN1 and then convince Anden he was okay to go for a walk on his own. The issues with Shae could have been solved with more flashbacks to their childhood to show Shae always feeling inferior to her brother and not having many friends. Also you could have had the start of her relationship with the Espenian guy as somewhat of a rebellion against the family, to make herself feel special etc. The many nations war comment I felt was very weird, its a war with many nations but not necessarily all the world, I also think all the other suggested names were very generic too, just like our real world war moniker for the large scale wars. The complaints about the worldbuilding in regards to the magic of Jade I disagree with, the more jade you carry the more status you have and it is directly a symbol of your power, prowess (to win the jade) and also your strength to be able to handle that much Jade. In application, if trained with your abilities can be much stronger yet at the same time you edge closer and closer to the potential of the itches, as seen with Lan, the fact he had to wear it or be seen as weak even though it literally was making him weak was super interesting to me. The complaint about themes, completely valid and more arise and become apparent over the trilogy. The complaint about prose I completely agree with yet it didn't really detract from the book for me, if done better would I like it even more? Yes, but regardless I love the story told. The complaint about how the progression aspect of the book is handled is also valid, I never thought about it during my reads of the green bone saga but now it has been mentioned I do agree although again, somehow didn't detract from the book for me, I guess I just love the setting/world and story so much it hides any issues for me, to hear this story written by Joe Abercrombie would be amazing though with each individual character having a voice that is recognizable in a sentence. I hope you guys get to finish the series and see some of the issues you have lessened as the series goes on. P.s You guys are my favourite reviewers, keep up the awesome work, stay true and honest and I love your rating system!

It's interesting what you took away from Shae's arc in this book, because it's one of the harder hitting elements for me. Her being close to her family, but not *wanting* to be close to her family was a big signifier for her toxic relationship(s) and I feel that I empathise with that hugely. Maybe this becomes more apparent as the series goes on, but it just shows how our experiences can dictate our emotional response to something.

Hoo boy… this is disappointing lol Spoilers ahoy (for this book only obviously) So I just read the whole trilogy like a month ago. Loved it, and agree with the apparent consensus that the books get better further into the trilogy But I did love Jade City. And I do agree with some of your complaints. Shae at the beginning was useless - of course she was going to rejoin the clan business. And I had serious issues with how she thought being in Janloon WITHOUT being in the clan business could ever work. Also didn’t super connect to Anden. However, those issues were trivial in the face of how much everything else ruled. Let’s go through some points: - the world felt *real* to me. Very built out and lived in. - the plot grabbed me and Lan dying 1/3 of the way in was an “oh shit” moment that, even tho I wasn’t super connected to Lan as a character, really made me wanna know what the hell else would happen, and it was just shocking in an awesome way - jade is more than a drug. Do drugs give you actual superpowers??? Of course not. It’s also super integrated into the culture and world. Also it has real world significance and history in Asia that you guys might’ve missed. Point being I don’t at all understand the worldbuilding complaints - and as for the… extremely nitpicky complaints you both had about not just show don’t tell but telling in the “wrong way” or not leaving enough mystery or whatever - I hear the complaint and I say you didn’t meet the book and writing where it is. It’s okay not to like that style, but you both talked about it like it’s almost objectively a bad style. I didn’t have your issues at all, because I was generally interested in the characters, plot, and world, so I always wanted to know more about what’s going on and what might happen. So it’s possible that your lack of connection to almost anything kind of compounded on itself to make the prose an issue? Idk if that makes sense Anyway I’m glad you’re reading on and I look forward to you both saving your own asses by loving Jade War!!!

So, this is one of my favorite trilogies. I read Jade City at the start of my post college reading years so maybe I’d be more critical on a reread, but generally this book was selling everything I wanted. Minus the whimsy of Ryu ga Gotoku, it definitely scratched the Yakuza series itch. Probably one of the most vivid settings on the level of the cosmere for me.

I feel the family drama in The Greenbone Saga is very asian coded. Maybe that's why a lot of western readers just can't relate to that. When I read the trilogy, I remember thinking "Oh this is such an asian thing. It's a good way to expose western readers to asian culture". Adding after listening to the emotional impact part - Yup. That's it! All of the issues are because it's written from an Asian perspective and cultural nuances are lost in translation.
@shughes577818 күн бұрын
Honestly, as the whitest of Irish/General European ancestry American, I very much understood the dynamics. People from families that always accepted them for whatever they did (I suppose the average podcaster 😂), don't relate the same.
@ilyashussein597218 күн бұрын
You just hand wave the criticism in this way. A lot of stories are set in vastly different settings or cultural backgrounds. It's more about the writing at points especially with how the characters are presented which is not enjoyable. They're not interesting.

@@vrindam1247I dropped the back just past the halfway mark but I'd say the main character is really frustrating especially in her decision making throughout the book and i think two ramble goes into the exposition dumping that goes on around how this family structure came about is really not interesting. The flashbacks especially.

I just read the book and found it middling as well. I agree with you guys that a lot of things, the characters in particular felt overexplained. You get told who they are by other characters and they pretty much live up to that expectation. The character I enjoyed the most was actually Bero despite him being a pretty bad guy, I found something engaging about the combination of his drive and stupidity. Ayt Mada was definitely interesting as well but we didn't get to see that much of her. The chapters I enjoyed the most were the short ones that told us about the background mythology of the Kekonese I thought that was really well done, some of the best I've read. However I found the setting a bit lacklustre considering the book is almost entirely set in Janloon the city didn't seem that memorable to me. Something about Fonda Lee's writing style just didn't seem very evocative to me. Last element that didn't work for me was the "crime drama aspect", I see the clans compared to mafia families a lot but the big difference is the clans are legitimate institutions, they don't have to do anything clandestine, there's never any fear of them getting caught by the authorities because for all intents and purposive they are the authorities. I agree the plot was very competent thought, I enjoyed the mid book twist.
@bill885617 күн бұрын
Wow. This is one of my very few hard disagrees with you guys (probably just this book and Empire of Silence which I think is far better than you guys gave it credit for). I get some of your points, however, and appreciate your honesty. The second 2 books in this series are definitely better, but Jade City is easily a 4/5 book. Maybe even a little higher, like a 4.2 or 4.3. Jade War and Jade Legacy being absolute banger 5/5 books. This trilogy, as a whole, beats Mistborn, in my opinion. I strongly suggest finishing it.

Ouuuf! I kinda agree with you guys but the 2/5 is kind of a harsh rating. I think 3 might be more fitting. My argument is, if Jade City is 2.0 what would fourth wing or some of terry goodkind books rating be. in my book it would be a flat 0. Still agree with most of your points tho (still listening)
@2ToRamble15 күн бұрын
For me (austin) fourth wing is 1.75. 2 on our scale means “flawed” and 1 (our lowest score) means “awful”. We have a video (episode 126) breaking down exactly how we rate books and how the rating system works. But essentially: If I gave Jade City a 3/5, every book review we ever do would be a 2 point scale ranging from 3-5 (much like many movie reviewers give 7s to movies they were like “eh” on). Realistically, we want our scores to reflect our feelings as accurstley as possible. 3 is the middle of our scale and means “neutral” and we cant say we were neutral on this book. If we gave books we didnt like 3 stars, we would realistically be using a 2 star scale and give 99% of books 3-5 stars. 2 star being “flawed” can fit a lot of books and reflects our opinions more accurately to each other. Theres a lot more details I can give, maybe we are due for another rating system deep dive!

I listened to the Audible book, so I don’t know all the spelling for all the characters, but Seth and Wit are my highlights for the book, while Kaladin and Shallon kinda stepped down for me because of the nature of their characters. I get why they are how they are, but it just moved them from my spot as favorite characters. My biggest disappointment was hearing that the next book was coming in 2033. Sure we’ll get plenty of written works from Sanderson, but that’s a long time to get more Stormlight.

Finally found people I agree with on this book. This book encapsulates the idea of "Mid" to me. I even tried going further to book 2 but just couldn't do it. Though I must confess, for book 2 I had to switch to its audiobook due to reasons and I was coming off from the masterclass Steven Pacey's First Law narration so I really couldn't connect with the jade war narrator.

Everyone always makes me feel weird because I don't like it. That being said, I loved Mistborn Era 2 way more than Era 1 .. and I did NOT like this series at all ... Sorry

I also didnt like this book. It started off good for me, but then the way the worldbuilding was delivered really dragged down the story in the second half. I didn't connect with the characters too much either.

Oooooh, the Many Nations? So many fantasy authors who want their world to sound "gritty" use basic, bland wording like that. Ever since the Witcher called its landmass "the Continent" and ASoIaF has "West continent, East continent, Southern continent and Planet named Planet" ppl have been sticking with it. And I just HATE that. It sooooo lazy, doesn't really work, often takes your reader out of the world AND is just incongruous with the love of worldbuilding I otherwise see in these series. Like, seriously, if the people in your world have unique names for their people, cities, magic, and everything else, they probably fucking named the place they live as well. And, if the issue is that they only think about their local area and have no concept of the Continent or Country as a whole then JUST LEAVE IT UNNAMED! PLEASE!

Man you'd hate that we have a North and South America
@TrentRyanKatzenberger18 күн бұрын
@jakecarlstad6192 lol, no, no. That's the sort of thing we should have more of in Fantasy. Yes, naming them both America is kind of boring, however, they were named America after Amerigo Vespucci for a variety of reasons. Id love it if instead of The Continent it was named Central Billville or something like that, cuz Bill founded it, lol

Jade Legacy is by far the worst book in the Trilogy in my opinion. She moves away from the characters and focuses on Jade politics. Do not waste your time IF you were reading to get more clan battles and family drama because you won't get it.

I absolutely loved books 1 and 2 (especially 2) and then liked book 3 significantly less due to pretty much the reasons you mentioned, @JustAnotherReader6. Yes, I know that many people consider it the best installment of the trilogy and I can see why. It unfortunately wasn't the case for me. I'd say on booktube, there are actually quite a few people that liked Jade Legacy the least.

@noname3609 I am glad the triology ending worked for you, but to me the time jumps and the politics killed any character development. Another unpopular opinion, I really disliked Empire of Silence BUT will continue based on the recent Howling Dark review they just had.

My review for jade city: 5/5 loved the characters, loved the mafia style stuff, loved THAT scene with Lan. Rest of the series: Jade war: boring until the last 1/3 of the book 3/5 Jade Legacy: plot device didnt work for me, and i called the ending halfway through the book. Fonda Lee didnt have what it took to keep up with the masterpiece that is the first book. But its still a trilogy id reccomend. Im genuinely in the minority that just didnt think the other two were that good

I DNF'ed this book way before the 200-page mark-- it sounds like it's just "The Blind Banker: season 1, episode 2 of "Sherlock," with a little bit of urban fantasy thrown in -- but, to be fair, "The Many Nations War," sounds like phrasing that was deliberately made clunky so that it would sound like it was an old concept being translated from another language. The only thing that I'm mildly curious about-- because Jade seems a little bit like The Skill, from the Farseer series-- is who is using the synthetic form of Jade to give the old patriarch "Dementia," and why? What does he know? Was he the one who originally created the synthetic compound, or just the one keeping it on the shelf, out of the public sphere, until now?
