In my math class if you didn't answer you got a zero if you answered it wrong you got negative one if you answered right you got a plus one. That stops people from just guessing.... You're better off not answering than answering it wrong

The countless arguments on Social Media over these types of question. So many people sitting thatPEDMAS/BIDAS/BODMAS is ‘the new way’ and that they were “taught differently in my day”. 1. It’s not ‘new’ and 2, if you were taught to go L-R then your maths teacher was not a maths teacher.

After a ‘long time’ I wanted to say thank you for these great challenges that appear here regularly. For example, I solved this one myself in less than 30 seconds. Well, I always like to use them for our 7 kids aged between 5 and 16 (okay, not so much for our 5-year-old daughter, she gets easier ones😉) as what I call the daily 5-minute ‘hello,-wake-up-brain’ challenges at the breakfast table. And 'daily' means daily ! I'm always rewarded with multiple annoyed sighs😬, but it pays off in the school results. And this is not just in maths. So...thanks a lot for all your work ! 👍💚 Salutations des Caraïbes françaises.🙂

Solve everything inside the square bracket first gives -10. Now -10/-2 is 5. (Minus / minus is +)

b. 5 in about six seconds in my head. I loathe using the obelus (÷), but in this case, both sides are completely bracketed, making the obelus a true fraction bar. The numerator and denominator are totally unambiguous.

Зачем эти квадратные скобки? Я вообще сначала подумал, что это модуль (абсолютное значение), поэтому получал -5, а не 5. И был в шоке от того, что автор на полном серьезе говорит про ответ 5. А оказывается, это то же самое, что круглые скобки. Зачем тогда писать квадратные?

B) 5 I did it in my head by following the rules. Brackets first. Multiplication then addition subtraction. (3-11) + 2(5-6) = -8 + 2(-1)= -8 + -2 = -10 -10 /(8-10) = -10 / -2 = +5

Well, no one is forcing you to watch. It’s very informative and covers a lot of misconceptions - invaluable for those who want a fuller understanding. One persons ‘unnecessary’ is another persons ‘fascinating’ I guess.

@@MrSummitville Just calling it what it is. Some people appreciate the time he takes and all the diversions. Others don't. Either way, I don't believe it's done primarily with the benefit of students in mind. I am certain he could make shorter videos if he wanted to without losing teaching content.
