I thought 3-3/3-5 as a bit of a gimmick too. One year we had an air raid team that was lighting everyone up (including us) we came up with an idea to try a 3-2-6 2 high Safety and dared them to run the second time we played them in playoffs....and we upset them holding them to 14 pts! A couple years later we lost our size and had smaller athletic kids and I tried a 3-5 double blitz scheme against a similar but more balanced team. It didn't work that well since the other team was just that much better, but an idea was born and we needed a change to fit our personnel. So I built an entirely new 3-5 scheme and it was a game changer for us. Its such a versatile defense. If you have size you can just play it normal and not blitz or if smaller you can be more aggressive. So you never have to change scheme based on personnel. I highly recommend if you don't have a lot of size normally and need a change. I proved it wasn't a gimmick. It truly isn't.

I originally thought it was all blitzes and movement. Then we tried to play it as a base structure with traditional run fits and Split Field coverages and absolutely loved it

@@CoachMac yea, even with our smaller guys I started playing it straight some and it was still successful. It can definitely work however u run it and is a legit HS defense. I will never run another defense after building this one.

We played a 3-3 front in highschool, but our d coordinator was a mad scientist. He moved our all state defensive end to middle linebacker and told him to just do what he wanted. He proceeded to lead the team with 144 tackles and 15 sacks in 11 games (got bounced by a nationally ranked Clay-Chalkville. Not fun). We ran the defense from the safety down. Every year since 2004, we've had a safety upwards of 120 tackles. Oddly enough, we didn't play for pressure. We would rush 3 most of the time and dare the offense to come after us. It's upsetting, as an offensive guy, how much that worked.

I'm curious what your thoughts on the 3-2-6 defense are Also do you think if defenses keep getting smaller and faster if power offense will start to come back?
@CoachMac4 жыл бұрын
You may see that trend, but it’s all about getting athletes on the field. Easier to recruit the hallways if you are more wide open

Great video coach. As we talked in some live, I play the 425 split field, and i'm thinking about sprinkle a bit of the 335. My main doubt is about the base D run fits. You have and old video saing you fit off of blocks (ex: if the tackle blocks out the E takes the C gap and the backer the B). Do you think to start a 33 that is the "best" option, or should i stabilish "in Base D - tackles always go C gap, or always go B gap" no mather what the blocking scheme is. And if so, which of the 2 (Ends on B or C, as a base) do you think is more viable? Thanks for the videos, keep up the great work.

I like the way we fit it, but your idea of base is not bad
