**You can do better**
TL/DR: The only thing going for these reacher grabbers is the low price for the pair. The awkward extension mechanism and broken magnet feature are enough for me to recommend you go elsewhere.
Pros:
o Cost
o Adequate length
Cons:
o Magnetic tips don't actually work
o Locking mechanism difficult to deal with
There are a ton of reacher grabber tools you can choose from, so I'm not going to go into a lot of detail about how they work and what they do.
Instead, I'm going to concentrate on the problems that tell me you should stay away from these grabbers.
First, they say there are inlaid magnets at both ends of the jaws.
This is not true, there is a magnet at one end and one end only. So if the magnet worked, you would always have to flip flop the gripper around to get the right side, trying one and then the other, because they look identical.
However, the magnet is so weak as to be laughable - it won't even pick up a paper clip! The only reason I believe that it is there is that I have some super-strong rare earth magnets, and I was able to get them to barely react on one tip and one tip only.
Second, the mechanism for unfolding and latching the gripper is not as good as you would like. The clip that holds the two pieces together when folded can easily come off either side, so when you open it, it's easy to knock the clip off. On competing grabbers, the clip is embedded in a groove on one side that keeps it in place. It also slides around, so when you are closing back up, you will have to manually align the clip - unless it fell off and you lost it.
Finally, the locking mechanism is somewhat difficult to work with. You pull the two ends apart against a tensioning cord inside the tubes, then align the grooves on both sides, and slip them into place. This isn't the hardest thing in the world, but for someone with impaired dexterity or eyesight it is going to be problematic. A bit of twisting and aligning that is really not necessary.
Competing reacher grabbers use a hinge and lock that make the whole process of opening and closing much easier.
I will admit that these are very inexpensive, however, a reacher grabber tool might be something you use for twenty years. Don't cheat yourself by getting on that doesn't cut it.
