Higher #s are for acceleration, lower #s are for top end or cruising. 4:10 & up is for drag racing. Many try to set the cars up so they hit max HP RPM at the finish line in last gear. I knew many guys that were running 5:13 & 5:38s. I ran 4:10 so I could also drive on the street, but I had 24” tall wrinkle wall drag slicks for the track while the guys with the 5:13 & 5:38 gears were all strip and running 31” & 32” tall slicks. They were max RPM at the finish line while I was only halfway thru last gear at the line. We also kept the throttle to the floor when shifting, which meant you shifted as quick as you possibly could. And with a good shifter setup correctly missed gears were rare.

Stop with the bs blanket statements. That very much depends on the car, the engine, the Trans and the entire setup. Just because you have 410 don't mean it's just for drag racing and 410 isn't the same across the board that's why these stupid blanket statements don't work. So much more to it than that.
@midnight3473 ай бұрын
I see what you're saying but 410 with a tr6060 or t56 is totally different than 410 with a 6r80 or even the aggressive geared mt82 (11-17) the transmissions are geared so aggressive you don't have to gear the rear end aggressive. So 410 on those is alot even na it's prob too much unless you run a huge tire. Different setups and power curves and weights etc need different things. So the this gear is good for this this gear is good for that statements are blanket statements that don't work always.
@midnight3473 ай бұрын
The best thing to do is understand how gearing works and decide gearing based on your setup not based off blanket statements made on the internet.
@fjohnson97493 ай бұрын
Everything said here is correct. I also raced motorcycles and changed gearing by changing out the front sprocket which was much easier to do but not quite as precise. The transmission gearing in bikes could not be changed as there were none available. Not sure about today as I raced in the ‘70s. But absolutely gearing can be changed anywhere. There were guys running Powerglides (2 speed) and running high gear rear ends as that was needed for that tranny. We also did not have transmissions that had overdrive gearing as the final gear or 2.

A good example of combination being good. The truck guys especially always going 4.10 amd higher when in reality they may be hurting themselves... they will get drug on the big end...

4.10's in a truck is way different because of tire size. 4.10's with 33 inch tires (common stock truck size on 2023) is roughly equivalent to 3.55's with a 28 inch tire like a mustang g would typically run if they're running bias plies
@midnight3473 ай бұрын
Not necessarily 410 for them prob isn't even as aggressive as 373 is on this mustang. The overall setup and trans and power curve has ALOT to do with what you need. You can't compare different gearing among completely different engine and transmission combos let alone different tire heights...
@midnight3473 ай бұрын
@Prestiged_peck this the broad blanket statements drive me absolutely nuts. Just learn how gearing works based on the overall combo and tire size and choose based on what you need not internet blanket statements that don't work 99% of the time. People are so oblivious to how gearing works and they act like 373 is the same on every vehicle every engine, trans, tire height etc when it's not even close. They think they understand it when in reality they're not even close.

Longer gears are better for rolls, so white car has better gearing for digs
@Greatest_Scott11 ай бұрын
Not necessarily. The white car was faster, but shifted slower. He hit his top speed much quicker though and would have been in the front sooner if he was shifting like a race car driver.

I currently have 327 gears on my 06 4.6 2v town car. I was debating on going to 373 gears or 410 gears. Or just stay with my 327 gears

@@hotrodlincoln7186 gears make it super fast The main deciding factor should be how high of a cruising RPM you're comfortable with and how high of a top speed you need.
@Greatest_Scott10 ай бұрын
@@hotrodlincoln7186 on my Mustang I went from 4.10 to 3.73 because otherwise my top speed was at 135-140mph and the 6th speed cruising RPM was like 3000rpm which had a good amount of drone. 3.73 is like 2300 and no drone unless going 100mph

It makes a difference man the guy with the 373 clearly can't drive for shit. He can't pull because every shift he kills his momentum because he sucks at shifting its pretty obvious to see. Everyone has their own expert opinions though lol
@midnight3473 ай бұрын
If you suck at shifting shorter gearing is just gonna hurt you. You can see it in this video. He's not in gear long enough to pull and when he shifts he loses momentum because he can't drive.
