I love the performance of my 18' 5.0 f150(10 speed) with 3.55's with stock tire size (32"). If I were to put 33'' tires on I would need to regear to 3.73 to retain stock performance. If I put on 35"s on I would need to regear to 4.10 to retain the performance of my stock f150 with 3.55's. 37'' would need 4.56 gears. Of course, you can regear the axle gears for bigger wheels/tires all-day but will never regain fuel milage of stock, and you can certainly run 3.55 with 35''s just fine. But I have blown up a transmission in my older f150 doing just that towing a trailer cross country

I have 3.31s in the 5.0 and the towing capacity is 8400 lbs max according to the manual... I have a lot of aftermarket upgrades on it (intake, headers, exhaust, wheels and tires (32ishs) Detroit locker, 4 inch spindles, upper control arms, Bilstein 5100s, super chips programmer) and it tows light stuff like it isn't even there. That said when towing the big trailer (16x8x7) home we just got it did fine empty however I'm regearing it to 3.73 because that puts my towing capacity up to 10k because that trailer is big and heavy and when it's full I don't want to take the chance with the 3.31s

In 2018 I ordered an F-150 Platinum 4x2, 5.0, 10-speed automatic, 3.55 Locking Rear End. I was going for a max payload Platinum (1,750 lbs) for towing a 6,300 lb Airstream. @randallgodfrey3852
@randallgodfrey3852 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheBigFunOne 2wd vehicles have higher tow ratings and are more economical for towing. The over the road trucks are 2wd vehicles. I also live in Florida where there isn't much need for 4wd. I did get the locking rear axle, which I had on my previous 2wd truck, and that always worked when I encountered a slippery road and helped me pull the trailer out. 14 years without getting stuck so far. There are features that only come with the premium models that we wanted, and the wife says if she is going to ride in a truck, it has to be a nice one. Thanks for asking.

MrInzombia not likely. A 4x2 EcoBoost can tow more and has a higher payload than a 4x4. I think the V8 has a higher payload rating than the EcoBoost. I was going for max payload. Also, the reliability of the V8 is higher than the EcoBoost.

@Sagittarius-88 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely some things to consider when choosing the gear ratio, and this will certainly come down to the individual driving habits and needs of the operator. I chose the 3.73 ratio for my 2020 F150 5.0 as I knew going in I was going to be running taller tires. Running taller tires is going to impact your 'effective gear ratio', but that's a whole 'nother subject. Do I get fantastic gas mileage? Not particularly. Do I care? Nope. What I do know is I rather enjoy the acceleration off the line factor. Added the locking differential to the package too as that could very well come in handy while driving on the beach. I think the 3.55 gears are a good compromise between gas mileage and acceleration for people that aren't towing/hauling heavy loads or running taller tires. If you're using your F150 as a towing/hauling workhorse, or running taller tires, I'd have to say 3.73 is the better suited ratio.

I think the 4:30 gears are a great option if you don't drive high mileage when not towing. I drive short distances in town, then tow 50-100+ miles 5-10 times per year. Diesel would be overkill. A 150 could even do it, but I don' t like the downhills with move than 5500 in the 150's.

Quick answer: 3.73 (or whatever the highest number becomes) is the only option you should ever even consider, higher acceleration and more pulling vs fuel economy.... who buys a truck for fuel economy? Also, it blows my mind how many people already own F150s and don't know this in the comments.... who the hell buys an expensive vehicle without studying every stat it has? I didn't know anything about gear ratios before I started truck shopping. it amazes me how many people don't know the stats of their vehicles after spending all that money.

Really great video. I don't know how many times I have come back to watch it. I get the physics behind gears and ratios, but applying the concept to a real-world application (like my truck differential) ... uh... _system not responding_. At first, I was That Guy your were talking about at the end of your vid, "...confused the crap outta ya..." BUT as I started to explore more, really "think" it though, and watch this video a hundred times - YEAH! I really appreciate your straight talk and examples of when/why you would want a different set up. Especially talking about your own truck! I have a 2018 F-150 V-8, 10-speed. Going to lift it soon. I am also thinking about eventually installing manual lockers - doing that research is when the lightbulb started coming on. I was bothered by all of the information floating around about the bigger/heavier wheels bogging down the truck, wrecking performance, the 3.31's would make it suck, blah, blah, blah. This video was VERY HELPFUL! I think I could apply your information to the off-road performance aspect, but I would love to see a similar video that talks about gear ratios on lifted trucks with 35's in off-road settings (not from a heavy towing or acceleration/racing perspective). Great educational video for those city truck drivers. 3.31 for long distance and freeway driver. 3.55 for freeway driver / weekend towers. 3.73 for towing toys and weekday workers always pulling a trailer. Lower the number better on mpg, higher the number better pulling power with bad mpg. Pick your poison.

I went from a 2012 3.5 Eco with the 3.73 rear end to a 2019 3.5 Eco with a 3.55 rear end and 10 speed. I have to say that I miss the 3.73 rear end but on the plus side I averaged 16.9 MPG towing my 2500lb boat/motor/trailer on a 2000 mile fishing trip. Not bad for a gas truck.

I've noticed a decrease in my truck's MPG after regearing. Previously, with the stock 3.55 gears and 38s tires, I was achieving 13-14 MPG. However, after installing the 4.88 gears, my mileage has dropped to 10-11 MPG. I had expected the regearing to improve my fuel efficiency, so I'm surprised and disappointed by this outcome. Only good thing is that now i am shifting better and using all 10 gears of my transmission

You where offon the description of what gearing does. 3.73 for example is a reduction after the transmission so you get one revolution of the tire per 3.73 turns ofthe transmission output shaft. The 10 speed makes 3.73 almost as long geared as the 6 speed and 3.31 on the highway and 3.31almost as low as 3.73 in first. I tow heavy with my 19 f150 I ended up with an HDPP 5.0 it tows my 11 to 12k travel trailer very well. Better than my diesel excursion.

I've got the 10 speed with the 3.73 diff and the 2.7L. I still get great mileage on the highway. The 10 speed is clearly programmed to get max fuel economy when you're driving moderately with a light load in normal and eco modes. It will skip gears to go directly to the higher ones once you're moving and doesn't downshift unless necessary. Of course if you put it in sport mode, different story altogether.

What do you get on the highway for fuel mileage? I’m mean, I’d rather the 3.73 for the extra towing but the trailer I have is about 6500 lbs so 3.55 works too. Just those multiply times a year is it worth it for the little less fuel mileage the 80% of the driving of the truck

Mitchell , helpful but I assume most dont know just want what go fast and like you do not care about mileage. I have xl xlt 4 doors for work trucks and personal. We run 373's and 355 as we can purchase them. As we keep very close tabs on mileage all 5.0 18's and 19's the difference in mpg is only .5 mpg (avg) between rear ends. Mpg varies between 22 and mid 17's across multi use/payload. Thanks for the content we watch your vids in the shop an usually create good discussion.

I realize this is a year old, but IMO, there isn’t a noticeable fuel economy difference between a 3.55 and a 3.73 with a 10 speed. In a vacuum maybe there is but the frontal area of going 75 mph and pushing against the wind drag is where your fuel usage come from,not the 40 rpm difference between the 3.55 and 3.73
@BC08
@BC08 2 жыл бұрын
Correct, MPG will be within a few tenths. 3.73 may invite one to apply more throttle since it’ll feel “ballsier”
@jamesdooley73

You really only talked about the importance of swapping the gears as it relates to towing. But another and probably more important piece of it is that when you go up in tire size, and don’t change the gears, it wears out your transmission, axle bearings and pinion. I put 37’s on my 1997 F150 4x4 and it wore the transmission out in about 10,000 miles. The transmission guy told me the whole transmission was shot, they had to do a complete rebuild on the transmission, right after the transmission all the axle bearings an the pinion went out. I ended up putting 4.88’s on it and it’s like a different truck, it hauls a$$ even with the big tires and gets almost twice the mpg than the stock gears. 33’s and maybe 35’s are probably ok to run with stock gear ratio, but any bigger and you have to change the gears.

With 35 inch tires on a 3.5eco, will a 3.73 act more like a 3.55? My understanding is the larger the tire the larger number gear ratio you want to counter balance that...
@jeffhirata
@jeffhirata 4 жыл бұрын
You are right. The larger the tire, the more your ratio will decrease in number (from 3.73 toward 3.55). The actual final ratio would require some math. So if you want to put in large tires, a higher gear number (like 3.73) will help you keep acceleration more similar to a 3.55. If you put large tires in a 3.55, your final ratio will go towards the 3.21. Putting on larger tires will lose you acceleration in general.

It's a no brainer. Higher gear ratio means more revolutions of the driveshaft, which causes more friction, but also means more acceleration, more torque, and that friction causes worse gas mileage as you go higher. If the gear ratio is too low, it can make it difficult to move heavier tow/payloads.
@megastarsport
@megastarsport 4 жыл бұрын
So numerically, how much more torque and efficiency difference are we talking about on the 3.73? If I jump on it in a 3.55 and a 3.73 that are otherwise identical, will I really feel the difference?
@TCcustoms_

If you drive them everyday, you can feel the difference when you step all the way on it. It’s not as big of a difference as most people make it out to be.

Man, i am not sure if you are a sales person at the dealership that you are standing in front of in this video, but i will tell you that if you are, you are an asset to that dealership. Most sales people are completely unfamiliar with this information. Gear ratios are a big deal when towing. Also, most customers come in to buy a truck with the incorrect idea of how much payload a truck has. You can have 2 f150's side by side, with 2 very different payload capacities. I bet you are familiar with that as well, and dent mislead your customers.

The ratio is not effected by tire size. The distance you travel is effected. Horsepower and torque to the wheels is effected. Tire size is irrelevant. One axle revolution equals 3.55 turns of the drive shaft.
