While most riders save up or finance for an expensive new bike, most don't realize there is a certain joy and beauty of getting on a vintage old ride like this. Even more peace of mind knowing you won't be spending the next 4 years paying for it either. I don't have one, but I do like looking at these old classics and maybe one day I'll get to ride one and see.

Just bought a 84 1200 Goldwing this past summer from a friend that had the motor suspension stator tires fluid timing belts done with less than 80,000 on it. Only reason he sold it cause he already had two other bikes and the wing was to big for him and wanted me to ride with him. Best $1500 I ever spent on a bike. And this thing is chromed out to the max.

Someone had to carry the huge tent. I'm getting ready for a trip across northern Argentina. My nephew's bike is apart for valves and a new piston & rings. Plenty of time to fix it. His brother and mother might come along in a car. The other bike isn't as trustworthy. I keep my '87 Wing in NY for transport in the US. Rode from NY to Montana in 2022. Not many problems. Fuel pump quit in the middle of Wyoming. Found an automotive pump at Auto Pro. Put it on in the parking lot. Love the old wings.

Great video. I owned a 90 GL1500 for 14 years, and 187,000km. Never let me down. Many smiles per gallon, including 2 trips to San Francisco (from Victoria BC) Like you I also did suspension upgrades front and back, and I highly recommend that if you find ball bearings in the steering head when you disassemble your front end that you change them to tapered roller bearings. All these upgrades transformed my bike.

Great trip. Made me homesick for Canada. Last time I was there I stayed in Calgary. I got to go to a rugby tournament in Edmonton, went fishing in the Rocky Mountains, played cricket on rattan wickets, and discovered how hard it is to pronounce the name of a certain ale made by Big Rock Breweries after you've partook.. partake... er.. had a few. Absolutely stunning scenery and people. I fell in love with Vancouver Island the first time I visited. Would love to do a trip down the Continent, taking in all the sights. I'm adding it to my bucket list. I'm waiting for my 1992 Goldwing SE Trike to arrive from the other end of NZ. It should be here by the end of the week. I've been swotting up on maintenance in the meantime. Great to see that Canucks have Wooses and Numpties too, eh!

I cringe every time I see someone my age getting on and off a bike with a difficult technique. The taller fella had his feet planted on the ground and had to reach way up with his leg and go over the backrest to swing his leg over and get off. Does he get off a horse that way or does he use the stirrups? I am shorter than both of you with much shorter legs but yet I can get on and off with much less effort and much quicker because of technique. Getting on a big bike has a certain technique that makes it easier. To get off easier: Use the the foot pegs and just stand up and swing your right foot under your butt while you pivot and step-down towards the side of the bike with the kickstand because that is where the weight is shifting. To get on it is the opposite. Approach from the other side of the bike and swing your left leg over like your doing a front left kick in karate and slide into the seat. Your weight is shifting momentum towards the stable kickstand NOT away from the kickstand which actually forces your legs to "Catch the bike". The bike is leaning AWAY from you which allows you to get closer to the bike and lift your leg. Another plus is your weight plus the bike's weight is all going towards the same direction which is towards the kickstand which is taking all the weight and is more stable. You fellas have big bikes now. You have to think like a bike bike and work within your limits to improve your coordination with the bike. Very nice bikes! I have seen women ride bikes with their husbands. Being shorter they try to keep up with their husbands and get on the bike from the kickstand side. They have to stand way back because the bike is leaning TOwARDS them and that actually makes it harder to get on the bike. I just stand back and watch while their unhelpful husband doesn't even tell them that if they got on from the other side you won't have to stand so far back. It kills me that many people just haven't figured that out but doing it this way makes it much easier.

Nice Vid. As an east coaster I'm envious, always wanted to ride those BC roads. The 1500 is the best bike I've ever ridden. Has a Harley, FJR. Honda was the best no issues. I found the headlite wasn't very good for night driving but that's about my only gripe about it. Had one for about ten years. Did most of the east coast, Maine, Mt Washington, Gaspe. Cape Breton many times over. Wiped out three years back on another bike had to give it up. Enjoyed your video. Thanks.

Okay , how do you handle and we’re you worried about black ice slick roads ? I’m worried about that as I’m about to attempt a 900 mile ride from Ohio to Florida in December.

I am only able to ride from April till about the beginning of November due to snow, ice and below 0 Temps. I don't ride in the winter so I don't worry about slick roads. Ride safe.

I paid $500 for the bike and matching Escapade Cargo trailer. Both had been in storage for 20 years. On the Goldwing I put on New tires, wheel bearings, brake pads, Timing belts, Rebuilt the Carburator, New Battery, New air filter, New fuel filter, New spark plugs, All new Fluids, Changed the engine coolant, Rebuilt the rear master brake cylinder, went thru all the electronics, Compression test on the motor, Got the air ride suspension working, Put on a Fork Brace, New side marker lights, and bought various Cosmetic pieces ( Front brake covers, embelems, right rear pocket lid ect..) And put about 70 hours of cleaning into the bike and trailer. On the Trailer I put on New tires, repacked the wheel bearings and got a New chrome trim kit All in, including buying the bike and trailer I spent $4,800

@@highmilagerider1154 Thats amazing. Worth every penny I found a $500 Goldwing GL 1100 Interstate from 1980 and all told I have: tires, battery, 2 front brake cylinder rebuilds, tax, tags, transfer, polish, Seafoam, 3rd brake light (safety first). Have not added it up yet however I feel I am not over extended. :)

One thing that’s simply non-existent on the gold wing, is the multiple variations with the “comfort triangle”… this is where the Harley has the wing beat in spades. That gold wing has the same seat in came with new, the same handlebars when new, the same foot pegs when new from factory… if that all works for you, great! But if not? And that’s where the Harley wins hands down. Multiple handlebar, seat, floorboard configurations to suit literally anybody out there needing the ultimate in comfort. Albeit, all those choices have a somewhat nasty effect on your next years wages….. thus the reason my wife and I went for the Road King😊….. chrome on a goldwing ? Oops, forgot the luggage rack🤣 Yeah, maybe I can’t get 1,000,000 miles on my Harley Davidson but while I’m riding the music of those pipes can’t be duplicated by any goldwing .

Glad you love your Road King, it is a great bike. You'll have to let me know how its doing when you hit 250,000km and how it runs 😃. I choose to keep this Gold wing all original. Have no fear though...there are multiple saddles you can switch to if you want ( Corbin, Saddlemen, Ultimate saddle, Russel Day long and many others). There are also multiple handle bars to pick from as well as bar risers if you like, as well as multiple foot pegs, HWY pegs and all the Chrome you could ever want. It is the most customizable motorcycle in the world. The Gold wing is also the best manufactured motorcycle ever made. Oh and that 32year old saddle I have, looks and feels like its brand new after 250,000km. 250,000km isn't even broken in for a Goldwing and there are many with 1,000,000km. My 1991 Goldwing has better brakes, better suspension, better wind protection, better handling, better motor, better passenger comfort and better reliability then any cruiser. And after 32 years it can still cruise all day long at 185KPH and not break a sweat. Goldwing sales started in 1974 and their still making them, The first Road King was sold in 1994 and in 2023 they are now gone. Unfortunately HD got rid of them because of slumping sales numbers and lack of profitability. If you love Harley, that's awesome. That's why their is a motorcycle made for everyone. I hope you guy's make many happy memories on the Road King and ride safe.

@@highmilagerider1154 At 61 years old, fortunately I’m not looking to be that high mileage rider anymore. And I didn’t buy my bike until I was well past a lot of things… my dad had the same outlook on Goldwings as you do, (he thought I was nuts for wanting an HD… but fortunately for him, he passed away and didn’t get to see me buy one🤣)… he was an over the road trucker and ended up selling that Goldwing due to the fact that he was just tired of highway when he finally got home.. didn’t want to ride it anymore…. Me? I wanted nostalgia, and old-school…. Sound. Yup, they quit making them in 2023… makes mine kinda special I guess. Different strokes for different folks.
