I was happy with the price of the 3955 16 core cpu. My first gen 8 core 1900X was $550 list. $1150 list for twice cores, twice the cpu lanes and twice the memory channels is terrific. If your coming from a 16 core Ryzen cpu, that's $350 extra for 5X the cpu lanes and 4X the memory channels. :)

Hi@@maxhughes5687, Excellent point and Perspective. The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X 32-Core, 64-Thread was $1925 when we Built the TRX40. And now the Threadripper Pro 3975WX for WRX80 is only $750 more. Good to compare! Notice the article updated to reflect only 3 CPUs from original of 4 CPUs. Thanks for that perspective.

Yeah I build the thing back in December, but I just now got around to uploading the videos.... pulled a back muscle, so I was able to get some time to upload the videos.... I had to literally customize the NZXT Case as the E-ATX Motherboard simply wouldn't fit properly without doing so.... Couldn't mount the PSU as I would have preferred either.... I don't know if I can get 8 sticks of RAM with this cooler though... I might would need to find some smaller RAM sticks if I were to add anymore RAM.... The Board was just too long, so I had to remove the PSU shroud, or cover to allow for it to mount up.... as well as slid the PSU closer to the glass.... so I could use the bottom of the Motherboard...lol... So, if anyone asks.... The TRX40 Designare Motherboard won't fit, in this case, without some modifications.... with the modifications, everything seem to fit fine otherwise...

In my opinion, in such motherboards should be better use a custom water-cooling loop for the two RTX 3090 (see for example the corsair water block). Not only for heat reason (it is better cool down 640W+ with proper radiators than with fans inside the case), but also because using the water block the two GPUs needs only 1 slot in terms of space and so, you do not waste 4 PCI-E 4x16 (64 lanes) just for the cooler of the GPUs. I understand that custom loop sounds like "gaming" but in this case allow you to maximize the potential of these motherboards. By the way, great video as always!
@BuildOrBuy

Hi IcaniCorrono, For access to those Slots, Absolutely Agree. And those Video cards which require a Water Loop may be easier to obtain. Thank You for pointing that out! How many power connectors does the 3090 require. The mob is 3 8 pin plus two six pin to the mobo for PCIe lane power draw. that's 5 of the 8 connectors on my 1200Watt P/S. Two for one GPU leaves only one unused on the P/S. TWO 3090's IDK?

What cases do you think would be good for these motherboards ? I would assume the Thermaltake W100, and W200 cases would be large enough, but I wonder what else would work...? If I were to go for a Threadripper Pro build, I would probably have to go to the 16, or 24 Core CPU, as the budget would be a bit higher.... I do like the idea of having 8 Channels of memory.... I have been noticing that when I am in Premiere Pro, that when my project videos are opening up in the project panel it seems to take longer to load, as well as when opening up the Media Encoder.... I think it may have to do with Adobe software though.... I have had to reboot my system several times because it simply freezes, so much that the mouse icon won't even move.... Media Encoder oftentimes seems to be slow in operating as well, as I will sometimes get the popup window, that the program is not responding... I think it is with the software though.... I have been busy with work, and getting other things taken care of, that I haven't had time to really dive deep into it.... but the 7000mb read, and write speeds should be nearly double the speed as when I was importing files into my projects for editing....with the Samsung Evo 970 Plus drives..... I haven't noticed any high temps, or anything... with the SN850,or Samsung 980Pro drives.... I think I would like for Adobe to work with linux.... Sometimes I think it has to do with Windows.... Now the Xbox bar screen recorder doesn't want to work.... It use to, but somewhere I think microsoft changed some system requirements, that make it geared towards game drivers, and the RTX 3070 Studio driver won't allow for it to...., I tried installing the Game driver to see if that would allow for it to work, but it didn't..... I then later had to reinstall the Studio Driver to work with Premiere...., I have also noticed that Windows seems to now want you to purchase things that you once got for free.... such as opening Apple I phone HEIC. photo files.... Whether that was Apple, or Microsoft, I don't know....I noticed that they seem to want you to buy a file opener for every different codec.... I'm like, " I didn't have to do this before ".... So, I am wondering if it is Just windows... because all of my PC monitoring devices, shows the hardware is working properly.... Also I am trying to get Rendergarden properly installed, and to utilize it with After Effects, but haven't been successful.... Might need some advice, and guidance on how to get that up, and functioning within after effects.... later on....

Hi Shannon, Just now seeing Your message. Never had an email. Good question. Depends. Options. I think that's something we need to discuss further and explore our options. Physically, there's only so far we can go in a Case. Then we have to balance that with Realistic expectations. Then step back a bit and Prioritize the Goals to reach a solution. After working through Slot and Lane assignments on the TRX40, that has me thinking just like You about the WRX80 Build. Considerations & Possibilities. I'm going to work on a Video about that and share my thoughts in an upcoming video. Very good points. Now the next point, Adobe. Agreed. That needs an Upgrade for certain. Very Annoying. And of the charts we've seen from AMD for Resellers, the number 1 app that benefits the most from a WRX80 Build is Adobe, Specifically After Effects. Go figure. There's a bug with Windows Xbox bar screen recorder. Try using Bandicam. Costs but it works and is bullet proof! So is their cutter, Bandicut. For quick and dirty video cuts. Amazing tools. Yes, You only want to use the Studio Driver! Stability! Fix one thing, break something else! Thank You Microsoft! How's everything running now? Sorry we did not see Your message sooner!

@BuildOrBuy Жыл бұрын
Hi Litteldog 540, Welcome! Great Question! Which WRX80? You should be able to install 4 of those. This will be a CPU Based RAID if that's the Plan. You might want to go with a GPU Based RAID. We have a Video on that. I'll get You a link! On Smartphone right now! That's a Self Bifurcated card. Details on those are more about Marketing than Details We need for evaluation of their Technology. Not fond of the SoftRAID they want to Upsell. Everything else looks solid on the Hardware. Also don't know about using as a Bootable Device if that matters. For a Self Bifurcated card to be Bootable would require an Onboard Bios that would Append the Motherboard Bios like a Highpoint card. This kind of reminds Us of the Liqid Honey Badger. www.liqid.com/products/liqid-elements/element-lqd4500-pcie-aic-ssd But that's more for Server due to Cooling Requirements than a WRX80 Workstation. You're on the right path! How are You using them? Rendering?

Good summary! These mobo's are probably going to be a little pricey. Its great that the Asus board has 7 PCI slots but if we add two graphics cards it will take up 4 of these slots leaving only 3. Also, will all of the PCI slots be active if three M.2 are installed? On previous boards the PCI 6 slot would be turned off when M.2 was installed was active...
@BuildOrBuy

Hi Victor Medina, Thank You for Your Comments! Agreed! Workstation Motherboards! If We add 3 RTX3090s, 3 Slot cards, that leaves only 1 Slot unless We can get 2 RTX 3090s, 2 Slot cards. No shared PCIe Resources! 128 PCIe Lanes. Changing 1 thing, changes everything! We have to consider all options to get the complete objective implemented. I think it's interesting we're not seeing 4 NVMe M.2 Drives on the Motherboard which means whether 2 or 3, they are through the CPU and not through the Chipset. We need more information! Stay tuned!

Seven gpus with EK water blocks would work because you're still single slot width on all seven. RTX 3090 (I think) has DDR6X ram on the back of the pcb. We may get Water blocks that cover the front and back, but I doubt they will be a single slot solution. Gill's RTX 3080 is a better bang for the buck. True PRO cards have a lower clock and a blower cooler to keep them cool and single slot width.

Hi@@maxhughes5687, Thank You! Interesting Questions to contemplate. Seems every answer spawns another question. And that too is a good thing! There are always tradeoffs to manage. How we answer at one point in time can change based on what we know is available at same given point in time. And as we continue to progress, changing one thing can change everything! Good to consider our options and do those 'what ifs' before spending a dime! We've learned a lot on the TRX40 that will help Us moving forward on the WRX80! Now if the supply chain can get fixed, all the better! Our options diminish with limited availability.

@@BuildOrBuy I love Your enthusiasm. This brings back a lot of good memories when as a young boy I told everyone that history is being made when the world switched from IDE ATA 66 to 100 that has given the best performance boost at that time. It was even better than switching from IDE ATA 100 to 133 or to PATA drives that were also both great performance boosters. I've been saying for decades that PCs should have better hard drives cause they are the slowest data senders in the entire PC build. Of course no one understood that simple fact from that day even till now that the speed of a system is determined by the slowest element. Everyone was thinking that only faster CPU will make their PCs faster and they wouldn't listen to me. You are the first person in decades that I met who understands that. We think so much alike. It's such a relief cause I felt so alone in my opinion about the importance of hard drive speed.

Hi@@donjon7554, These are exciting times to be Building a Computer! Remember the Promise PCI PATA cards? Three iterations ATA33, ATA66 then ATA100. All Parallel ATA before SATA. Then SATA I, II and III. And now NVMe! Wow! We did not touch SATA until SATA II. And as long as we had PCI, those Promise PCI PATA cards, were golden beyond their years. Worth every penny! Sill have those! Cutting Edge Dinosaurs now. Yes, a chain is only as strong as the weakest link! Funny, we still have Spinning HDDs and will continue to do so as sizes increase for archive. And now even PCIe 4.0 is not fast enough. Look at the NVLink. NVMe benefits the most from PCIe 4.0 and not Video cards singularly. Dual Video cards can benefit from Linking whether AMD Infinity Fabric or NVIDIA NVLink. Which brings Us to the WRX80, with 128 PCIe Lanes. This is like looking back at IRQs when that was the big deal! Phenomenal!

Ohh by the way. Asus has had a card for a while that allocates all available PCI express 4.0 lanes that are left unused or of minimum use and allocates it to itself by giving m.2 slots on this card the best possible bandwidth. It's for HEDT and for AMD x570 a much needed solution. Check it out if that's true. The cards overview page with text and photos says that it is smart enough to do that. I don't remember it exact model name but just check in search on Asus site for Hyper m.2 gen 4 card or something like that. Asus sells it without the need of buying a motherboard. I'm sorry that I can't remember it's correct model name but I've got some serious problems that I have to attend to. You will All understand when I explain myself to All of You wonderful Subscribers and to You my KZbin Champion.

Hi Don Jon, I think You are a bit confused. ASUS has 3 M.2 NVMe cards. 2 for PCIe 3.0 and 1 for PCIe 4.0. All are made for HEDTs. All require Motherboard Bifurcation to reallocate PCIe Lanes since each NVMe Drive requires 4 PCIe Lanes. Hence a x16 Slot electrically is required, not just x16 mechanically. Hope You're OK. You may need to rest a bit again. Take care of your self! Appreciate Your Comments!

ASUS or GIGABYTE WRX80?
@BuildOrBuy

Hi BABAK KOSARI, Welcome! Interesting Question! We can make a case for and against either one. For example, Workstation class Motherboards, ASUS. Included M.2 NVMe x16 Quad AIC, ASUS. Easily accessable Fans, ASUS. Want or need Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 with 5 Pin Header? Gigabyte! Price? Gigabyte! Which way are You leaning? Most Users stick with the brand they are familiar with! Great Question! Thanks for Asking! Stay tuned!

@@BuildOrBuy Thank you for your response. As far as Thunderbolt is concerned, I am coming from an entirely Mac Os environment so I do have quite a bit of thunderbolt devices. I still use the mac but I have been frustrated with the ecosystem when it comes to power in davinci resove, hence my Threadripper Pro beast setup. The need for thunderbolt is for most part convenience to be able to connect but is not a necessity since I have much faster IO with my Auros m.2 raid and 10Gb network. My question is on quality of the boards and longevity with the said companies. I have not had much experience with either company. The Gigabyte seems great but it lacks wifi and bluetooth and will use up a pci for that purpose. I have a TRX 3090, blackmagic decklink card, wifi card, m.2 raid card and Titan Ridge card which leaves me with two open slots that I cannot add another RTX GPU.

Hi@@babakkosari3749, We're working on next Video and will include Your Question in that! In the mean time, We have used all of the Motherboards made over the years. We have the longest history with Gigabyte. Our 1st ATX Motherboard was Gigabyte. We expect with what You have, You'll be ready to Upgrade in 10 years. The Motherboard will be changed out simply due to the technology. Historically, AMD - Gigabyte. Intel - ASUS. As for WFi, does not belong on a HEDT nor a Workstation for Content Creation. Why? DPC Latency. That would be the 1st thing to turn off. If You were using a Pro Audio interface, DPC Latency would be a problem to overcome. Why? Polling of Devices. Windows is not a real time O/S. Another Video! As for the GPU, that's going to be what this next Video is about, Workstation Video options and considerations. Stay tuned! Now... Your RTX 3090, how many Slots wide? 2 Slots or less? Which Decklink card? A 4 Lane card?

@@BuildOrBuy Thank you for that information. My RTX 3090 is a three slot GPU so I have it on the first PCIe lane in a Fractal Design XL 7 case, all the way on the bottom. My DecLink is a mini monitor 4K, in the x8 slot (slot2). Then I have the Titan Ridge card in slot 3. Slots 4,5 and 6 are taken by the RTX 3080 and finally slot 7 is occupied by the Auros raid card. Setting up Titan Ridge was a challenge to say the least but it is now working flawlessly.

@@BuildOrBuy I did try the Maple Ridge card and there is an interesting message on the "About" section of the Thunderbolt Control Center that says "PCIe tunneling needs to be enabled for certain devices to connect." Supposedly configurable in the BIOS. I have not been able to get any further info on this and how to enable or disable it in the Gigabyte WRX80 MB. Any thoughts?

Hi Free Money, ASUS looks like the clear winner! Now I'd like to know about what Gigabyte found out! My guess would be the Bios based on what we're finding on the TRX40 with Slot and Lane assignments. That's been a convoluted process as outlined in this last and next video coming out tomorrow! Bleeding edge technology! We need to wait and watch before we jump!
