Lilly Pads can be tough to fish. When bass fishing your baits get hung up a lot and the fish can get off the hook easily. Here are three baits and three ways to fish lily pads that change the way you feel about lily pads.

Growing up in Florida, I always used a 10" or better curl tail worm, or "swimming worm". Something like a Charlies, Culprit, Zoom, etc. Rig it Texas style, no weight. You're going to cast as far out into the pad field as possible and work it straight back at a steady speed like a snake. Keep the rod tip high so the nose of the worm slips over pads, and move the tip to guide the line around the "V's". When you get to a hole, you dead stick it and let it fall. It slow falls, tail spinning. If the Bass doesn't blow up on it as it swims over the pads, it either will when it falls or smash it as it starts to get away when you start reeling again. Also works great on hydrilla mats or duck weed. Get that curl tail spinning like a soft plastic buzzbait.

Appreciate all your knowledge Gene! Fishing as with any art form is a never ending learning curve and I've noticed that even if you know things and apply that knowledge to your art, going over your knowledge base brings you back to a centered focus. You help me keep that in the forefront of my mind. Thank you sir!

Thank you Flukemaster: you are the first one to even touch on the hooks getting hung up on the pad stems. I fish "frogs only" all summer. My area has two different types of pads as the growing season progresses ,flat on top water and later the big ones ,seed pods and stems 2'out of the water. These pads measure over 3' across and get thick as thieves. I use 30-40# Powerpro braid and strength is not an issue , I use two different set ups most of the time 7.5 heavy/ fast and 7.8 extra heavy/ fast, both with 8-3:1 reels. There are multiple issues I encounter . 1 I have set the hook too soon, this leaves the hook exposed near the mouth which is a stem catcher. ( I fish out of a Bonafide 127) 2. This one seems to really perplex me some times , I get a really good deep hook set and the hooks come out thru the roof of the mouth and same stem issues. 3. I get a 4-5# bass hit and they wrap me up before I finish my hook set or shortly after because the pads are so thick and the distance between myself and the fish can be rather long at times . Even with a really deep hook set this can in thick pads be challenging. I think these issues are worth talking about as I've not seen them covered before. Everyone seems to be so worried about size, color ,cadence, bending hooks up and out, boiling frogs ,#s of braid to use . In my experience once your hooked to a 3/4" green lilly pad stem 65# braid is not pulling it out. And once wrapped around a couple of these fiberous stems under water it's a wrap. Perhaps you have some advice for these issues for extra heavy pads? I've already made peace with the issue that it's going to happen and paddling up to hung up fish sometimes works and a lot of the time it's a difficult paddle with one and a half hands free and a lot of times it's only result is to free the frog from the stem. But I catch a lot of bass fishing this cover just have to be content with the issues at hand. I welcome any miracle technique to help 🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🇺🇲🇺🇲

I’ve been fishing a senko on a flouro leader this past week. There’s a pond by my house and the lily pads have started breaking up. Basically a weightless senko with the leader. Cast on to a pad near a hole reel into the hole and let the senko do its thing. Been killing em. The braid slices through the stems.
