Nice and informative content, Mary. I'd also like to add a little more information about planting seeds saved from a first harvest. Not only will they more than likely turn out to be identical to the original, but they will also have been acclimated to your soil and perform even better than the original. 🍅I also live in zone 4b, which has a very short growing season and 3 years ago, I invested (I waited until it was on sale 50% off) in a small, four shelf indoor greenhouse where I grow from seed, greens that I eat regularly.

I just wanted to add that you still have to be careful about cross pollination with open pollinated seeds. Certain plants can cross pollinate and create a hybrid in you saved seeds that's very different than you expected. For example, cucumbers and watermelons can cross and the results when you plant your saved seed the next year usually aren't very good. Pumpkins and certain squash varieties can cross...So that's something important to learn about and keep in mind when saving seeds.

That's great! Many seed companies don't provide seed saving information, and then new gardeners get discouraged when they don't get the results that they expected.

Peppers too. I live where peppers are not perennials so if you want true you overwinter and use cuttings. Takes a lot of space. You cannot do that with squashes.

So true, Julie. I had a single summer squash growing in my pumpkin patch earlier this year and I realized I didn't want "squ-mpkins" so I removed the squash plant. My wife and I had a good laugh thinking about squmpkins. 😅

In the spring, shortly before "break-up" and thawing, I put my seeds in miniature "greenhouses" and egg cartons (paperboard, used like "Jiffy Pot" brand) and I put them in my boiler room. Once they start, I put them in window sills where they can get some sun. Once it warms up enough to move to the greenhouse on the deck or the ground is thawed enough (my raised beds are already frozen for this year) to go ahead and plant. If still cold at night, I use plastic sheeting and wood or PVC to make a green house tent over each bed. At least until warmer weather and nights and plants are sturdier. THANK YOU for sharing, Mrs. Mary.

I was gifted these one year for Mother’s Day from my daughter. I live in zone 9(a,b)-10ish and these are fine. Just be careful where you plant. In my zone full sun is not great. They grow in partial shade in my zone. It’s the only way I can get them to produced. Hope this helps.

Theresa, you don’t have to have survival seeds to store. Just get whatever does grow in your area. I have seeds from all over the place including ones I’ve saved and they come back year after year. No problem. No offense to Mary, bc I think it’s good what she is promoting. But it isn’t exactly necessary. Just buy seeds from the store, fold em up and store them in the fridge in a mason jar. This is how Mel from square foot gardening did it. I don’t even do that, I store them at room temp in the house, in zip loc bags and or seed packs and store in plastic photo boxes. Most seeds are hardy. So, don’t worry. Also, you can get a very good variety of seed from dollar tree in like February/March. They last forever too. Just get good at saving seed from varieties you like and you’ll never lack.

Oh Julia!! What happened? How long did you leave them at room temp and what was the temp in your kitchen? Ferments generally like to be fermented between 68F to 72F. I often recommend that once you see bubbling in the jar, get them into the fridge. This prevents slimy from developing. They will continue to ferment but at a slower rate. For a successful ferment, you want the pH to be 4.6 or lower. Love, Mary❤️🤗❤️

Tomatoes love warmth, but mid-summer heat here is not warmth, it's blazing HOT. Sometimes if you cover them with a shade cloth canopy that can help. But watch the percentage of shade. Too much shade and they don't get enough sunlight. And yes, cross pollinating can be a problem. If you grow more than 1 variety of the same plant make sure they are on separate sides of your garden.

I live in Saint George Utah zone 8b. I have found that when I transplant tomatoes end of July to early august I get a second crop. This works especially with Roma type tomatoes because by the time they're setting fruit the temperatures are a little milder.

Oh I love this, as a vegetable grower I’m a little envious of those beautiful packs (I’m in Ireland so can’t buy them 😢) but it’s a wonder video for planning my gardens for next year 💚 thank you

Thanks :). What I ended up deciding to do when thinking on this topic last year, was to buy the book " Seed to Seed" which was the more comprehensive and costly one that Pinetree garden seeds had on offer, and buy some seeds, more on that in a sec. . The book was maybe $20 to $30, I forget. Significant to me but worth it's vrs. spending less but not having all the info I made need down the road , (and I don't like how dependant on the internet I am for things ! Want more key info on hand, on paper). Then, I thought about which garden plants I wouldn't want to be without, and which would be hard to save seed from ( or have successfully re-seed themselves, like lettuce almost always does around here ). Carrots were one. Basically any bi-ennial, and esp. carrots as they'd cross with wild plants like Queen Anne's lace. So, having been recently made aware that my Bff's cousin's company, Everwilde, sells their seeds in re-sealable mylar bags, for max preservation of seed viability, I ordered from them. Turned out they also offered many in various sizes, incl. quite "Bulk" . So, I have a BIG, un-opened package of carrot seeds ! I also bought smaller, other varieties I wanted, from various sources, to use for now. Sadly, zucchini crosses with my hull-less seeded pumpkins, so, in future I need to plant one in a different, far enough away plot, but I can save seed from my buttercup squash. I want to keep the most ripe and hard ones in store-room as long as possible, then save seed from them, but I'll save from some others too, to get some variety. For some things, it can be more ok or even desireous to just allow the crossing and keep saving from the best of that, and getting a wonderful landrace of unique tomato, pepper or whatever. But I prefer to keep some things as they are, like different flavored or heat level peppers, so, some traditional/conventional seed saving preparedness is in order, for me, too.

I looked at all three collections and saw little, to no, overlap. Since there were plants in each collection that I wanted, I decided to buy all three and was pleased to see that I received a 10% discount on the entire order, not just one collection. Thanks, Mary.

Are these seeds organic?

Hi Brian, the packaging says "Chemical Free" but I don't know if they are officially organic. They are non-hybrid, open pollinated, and non-GMO. Keep in mind that organic doesn't mean pesticide free, just grown with pesticides that are approved for the organic moniker. These seeds are at least chemical free. Love, Mary
