Correct. The safeties that have been put into place by Audi on the stock ECU are not enough to save the engine when things go wrong on a tuned engine. This is why we inject additional custom code onto the stock ECU for more safeties. We prefer this approach as we are looking for long term reliable solutions opposed to dulling the knock sensors to make power which is common practice on this platform.

My basic rules to help protect my flex-fuel tuned RS3 from mechanical failures. 1. Add RON booster or E85 to each tank to prevent knock/detonation. 2. Have a tune which isn't pushing the car to its limits and has safeties. 3. Regularly datalog the car where possible/practical to do so. 4. Perform regular services, look for signs of failure and fix before it breaks. 5. Have some mechanical sympathy, don't beat up on it if not datalogged.

@InfinitPerformance
@InfinitPerformance Жыл бұрын
The knock control system on the MK2 TTRS is not as weak, nor does the stock turbo make enough power that it overcomes the allowable peak cylinder pressure limits on that engine. What I would do though is have the injectors serviced, they are extremely common for injectors being stuck open/closed which causes the cylinder to go lean!

The cepa engine is a stronger engine. The daza not so good.
@InfinitPerformance
@InfinitPerformance Жыл бұрын
The CEPA/CZGB engines are using an iron block, the material of the block is nothing to do with the strength of the engine, unless you are at a power level where you are cracking the cylinder walls (1200-1500hp) it is not the reason behind majority of the engine failures on this platform. The aluminium block engines are actually better for high horsepower applications as they have 6 bolt mains for crank support, which the iron block engine does not. The turbochargers are different and the facelift turbochargers are capable of a lot more power and spool way faster than the older engine/turbos ever could. This is one of the reason why we are seeing a lot more failures. With the old engine, you could get away with a lot as it didn’t make enough power on stock turbos in the first place and the spool was slower. So everyone could get away with poor tuning as the setup was a lot more forgiving. With the facelift engines, margin for error is extremely low which is why safeguards had to be put in place to monitor the engine management system constantly and notify the driver.

@@davidrojas9633 we have had safety algorithms in place for 3 years now and we have not had a single engine failure since. When an injector, coil pack or spark plug is getting weak it notifies the driver by flashing the EML as the engine starts making heavy knock corrections. It also simultaneously switches you back to a safe map to protect the engine and will not let you switch out until you have the issue addressed. Stage 1 map on these should be fine ( hate calling them stage but it's what most know) The main issue is intake temps more than anything so popping on a upgraded FMIC is a good shout also though stage 1 doesn't really require hardware mods. Also a TCU tune is a good idea so it's more inline with the uprated torque the engine is producing. But I think beyond that is when you could be pushing the engine and hardware more towards it's limits. I've seen people bolt on turbos and be fine running 600+BHP. So it also comes down to mechanical sympathy. Don't floor the car while it's still not warmed up fully and do regular oil changes and servicing. Audi seem to recommend oil changes every couple years but I rather do once within a year atleast. Depends on the miles done as if i did 7k miles then oil change.

I have a 2019 RS3 with 50k miles I just bought. I have been wanting this car for a very very long time. I just purchased the car 3 days ago and had it checked out by a performance shop that checked everything including compression which was good. All they said was there was a very little bit of oil on the spark plugs and a small oil leak in the back but nothing major. So I bought it. It is an IMS710hs RS3 with a UNI ECU /TCU non built motor tune currently on E85. It runs great! loud and fun, I don't push it too hard. I did however just watch your video. Especially just now purchasing this and I am not made of money. I wanted to ask how I can keep this car running and safe? What do I need to do for someone not just made of money? I want to have this car running strong for a long time. How can I protect the engine. I am in Miami, so I can't obviously come to you guys. Thanks so much for your time

Very ballsy. Any e85 tuned rs3 even on stock turbo are damn near the limits on stock motor. Everytime you do a pull roll into it and don’t go WOT until 3500-4000 rpm’s but I definitely recommend building that motor up with that bigger turbo.

The fact is you have to be a very talented driver or have alot of motorsport mileage under your belt to drive one of these stock vehicles to its maximum potential, never mind a 500hp one. 99% of drivers do not fit into the "talented" category, so therefore are wasting there time & money in modifying there car. leave it stock, you will go faster for longer, that i guarantee.

Thanks for the great info. You have a new subscriber 👍 Worked on a few RS3’s myself and always tell customers not to go for the cheapest tunes they can find. Can’t understand how you can spend so much money on a car and skimp in the tune / supporting mods. Ones I worked on had: •Unitronic stage 1 / 2 ECU map - 93 octane. Was on the 95 octane map if they were running ethanol (Paired with a P3 gauge to monitor) •Unitronic TCU map •Unitronic carbon intake and elbow •Unitronic Intercooler • Downpipe with decat Paired with Motul 8100 X-Clean+ oil and OEM filter Not saying Unitronic is the best / only go with them etc. Just delt with them and they have “safe tunes” Not dyno happy tuners chasing numbers with huge torque spikes. Hell, my girlfriend has a RSQ3 and that’s staying stock while it still has warranty 😂

Thank you for the kind words! As I said, maintenance is key. If you are choosing to tune your engine you are responsible to stay ontop of it. If you don’t have our safeties, over service your car. Datalog it regularly. Service intervals should be halved. If you are running E85, I would advise injector servicing every 20k miles. E85 is tough on injectors.
