Not dumbed down? There was a conversation in the first episode where two characters just keep saying dumb shit like 'science is breaking', 'people are not keen on science being broken' and 'I don't understand the science that's broken'. They must have said science and scientist 20 times in that one scene, it was laughable. Instead of the cool scene in the book with the billiards/pool explanation, we see an animation and it's described as 'fuckin Alice in wonderland'. The show is very obviously dumbed down

SO TRUE. They dumbed it down immensely to the point where I couldn't believe that these were humanity's best. I think it's a poorly written show with abysmal dialogue and is full of plot holes. It's definitely made to be palatable by dummies but "science is broken" line is such idiotic writing that it made me angry and then made me laugh cause I felt like the show is trying to insult people's intelligence. This show sucks. But I like the premise so I will definitely be reading the book

I'm glad that you mentioned the hesitation you have from not knowing if this story will get to play out in its entirety. I feel like this is more of a recent problem, despite the reality that shows get cancelled all the time. One promising series that I invested time in, and felt burned by, was Raised By Wolves. It streamed weekly on HBO/Max and is now completely gone from the platform. This trend in streaming services has me cancelling services and running back to physical media.

In Liu's book, the main characters are Chinese, but many (maybe half) of the important people are people from all over the world, including Japan, the USA, the Middle East, Africa, etc. However, in this show, all the main characters are British, and there is no Chinese (at least no Chinese citizenship, I mean the role, not the actor); even if you look like an Asian (Mr. Shi), you are born in Manchester, lol. It gives me a feeling that you are trying to persuade everyone that the British are leading the task of saving the world this time and none of the other countries is important at all. Either the producer cannot admit the contributions and ability of China and other non-western countries nowadays and in the future. Or does he think the Western audience is too dumb to understand a story that is not 99% British? As a person who has read the books 5 times, the director or the producer does not deserve such a good story. Please leave it for some more talented person in the future who can understand the world to shoot it.

This was my problem as well. Also they kept showing a character who doesn’t exist until the 3rd book. (Lady with sword) I watched the Chinese adaptation as well and also had a problem with their version and how they chose to add/remove characters. I just think the trilogy is perfect and deserves a true to adaptation with the character development Cixin Liu had in his stories.

In the book, the main character is not a young woman and does not work with a team of scientists, but a middle-aged family man and he works with a detective. So I don't know how it's identical. There are scientists, but they are part of a secret society (and rather under investigation), and there is a young woman, but she kills herself at the beginning.

I'm so excited for this but also anxious because Netflix always seems to cancel shows I love (the OA, Sense 8, Anne with an E, Santa Clarita Diet, Glow, Mindhunter, 1899) and loves to cancel them when they end in cliffhangers. It's infuriating. I guess I can take comfort in the fact that at least I have the books to read if that happens with this one.

My favourite show of all time is Dark, an incredible work of science fiction and they finished the three season arc that was always intended by the creators and it's still one of the highest rated shows on the platform. Then the creators made a similar style show called 1899 which first season was incredible and they cancelled it almost immediately despite good reviews and it being well viewed. Absolutely furious. They pump out too many shows and can't afford to continue all of them. Better to do less quantity and focus on the quality shows

It is a vicious circle. Netflix will renew only if people watch, but because people are never sure that things will be renewed they don't watch even if they are interested. *Sigh* I have become so annoyed with this model, I abadndoned the entire American TV with very few exceptions. Nowdays I watch mainly Korean and a bit Japanese series where they have only 1 season. When you start a show, you know it will get an end. Also, you will get that in few weeks, not few years (if you are lucky).

Tense, thrilling, emotional and cerebral. Great character development. Easily the best show Ive seen in a while. Alexander Woo, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss have been uber-successful in creating a visual and dramatic masterpiece by adapting a well-recognized excellent science fiction novel. You feel the visceral, ethical and intellectual struggle with the decisions and challenges these characters all have to make. The series of tragedies that leads Ye Wenjie to sell-out humanity is in particular numbingly sad-- because the viewer is made to empathize with her. "3 Body Problem" just rises above the useless rot of bad shows that have a lazy audience appeal ("The Gentleman" or anything with a "Star Wars" insignia on it) .

We have been gifted with some truly excellent sci fi this year so far....Dune 2, which was fantastic and now '3 body' finally hitting Netflix. I am relived to here they did a good job with it...I am torn in that I am halfway through the first Book of the trilogy, and having a hard time putting the book down and don't know if I should wait to watch the series before I finish the trilogy. I am very intrigued by the story, and the trailers for 3 body look fabulous. We are also supposed to get "The Electric State" at some point, which I am also very excited for. I am truly hoping that with Hollywood coming to the realization that intelligent, complex stories can make money if done right, It will herald a new cinematic age of movies that leave you spellbound...Instead of the watered down superhero crap we have been getting for the last decade or so. So very sick of the Marvel crap...Star Wars too...not sure how Disney took a franchise that could have earned them Billions and Billions and drove the show into the ground...couldn't care less about Star Wars anymore to be honest, and wouldn't give two S***'s if it was completely abandoned at this point.

Most people agree this first book in the trilogy is amazing and necessary, but the weakest compared to the next two books. The name of the series, "Remembrance of Earth's Past" tells where this is going. The ideas and scope are enormous and will probably change the way you think about our place in the universe.

Amazing series! 10/10. People have to remember that Netflix’ 3 Body Problem is a western adaptation of the book, and the creators received the author’s blessing to adapt his work and he encouraged them to make necessary narrative changes. Some of those key changes include chronological shifts, character tweaks, expansions, additions, and setting the present-day story primarily in the UK. And there’s already a Tencent adaptation with all Chinese cast available on Amazon Prime Video. I haven’t seen it yet, but I heard they censored or watered down some stuff from the book.

You did not mentioned that the 3 Body Problem has already been adapted for television in Chinese. Now I only watched the 1st Netflix episode but the Chinese series is different in lots of the scenes - and yes - it is dumbed down. Don't say its not. In the Chinese one you need to have your eyes glued to the screen not to miss any dialogue which is on many vomplex topics. In the English one we see more human daily interactions and shortcuts. Like the Universe is blinking at you scene is dumbed down a 10 to 1 in comparrison. The Chinese version character had to go get special spectral goggles from some University to observe the Universal background radiation. For now the English version is weaker. I will watch the rest, but I am keeping my hopes low. I was hoping it is more engaging then the Chinese one. I haven't read the book, so I can't comment on how close to the source material it is. I know that the public execution scene was missing because it doesn't put China in a good light.

Sci-fi show that i saw recently and thought it was excellent was the Chinese adaptation of Three-Body Problem, unlike the Netflix's approach, this one sticks extremely close to the 1st book and enhanced the characters, they also don't shy away from all those hard science concept. The thing I didn’t like about it was they tried to cover mostly of book 1 and insert parts of book 2 and 3 into 8 episodes and things were revealed too early. When you get to ep 6-7, it’s like it slowed down and a bit boring since you already know what’s the mystery. Then a start of a new arc where they tried to get your interest again but it’s already episode 8. They tried to make the finale a big deal, but it wasn’t as impactful as probably revealing the mysterious people behind the game which they already did in earlier episodes. Still im giving it a 4/5 rating. Season 2? Maybe. But definitely not season 3. Unless they slow down the story for season 2.

Please try and finish first few chapters of Book 3 before watching Netflix series because some really important characters from book 3 are in Netflix series. Reason is that all 3 books have characters who started in 2000s. These characters might not be Chinese from China but definitely have the same personality type and academic background. It's basically what an adaptation for the western version is... sadly some people are upset about that. Honestly, with Tencent doing their own faithful adaptation, it would be counterproductive for Netflix to try to one up it by sticking too close to the books with characters. It would seem like bad attempt because you can't out authentic the Chinese themselves.

The Tencent tv show is so much better yet at times tedious in it's pacing, but is the most loyal and respectful adaptation of the books. This adaptation apparently includes some elements of books 2 & 3, just to set future events up and help with their chronology. Haven't watched it yet, though. It also focuses on the characters more than the trilogy. Let me expand on that. If you haven't read the books yet, remember: this is hard sci-fi. This means characters are not the focus of the story, so don't expect heroes, villains, romance and adventure. This series is about concepts and ideas. I've seen some reviewers fail to understand that (especially women) and being a little disappointed with how certain characters turned out. In these books, characters are more representations of aspects of humanity than anything else. I highly recommend it. There's also a spin-off, basically fan-fic approved by Cixin Liu, written by Baoshu. The best way to describe is "deleted scenes". It's good too.
