The Netflix version took some liberties and changed the location from China to UK, also many of the characters don't really exist in the books, they're mostly inspired by their book counterpart but definitely not the same characters. With only 8 episodes, Netflix version didn't only covered the main plot of book 1, but also the start of book 2 and 3, so a lot of plot was left out, the books have more depth when compared with the Netflix series. The Chinese version was mostly followed the 1st book, and much closer to the source material than Netflix version, almost a page-to-page adaptation. Tho it retains the depth of the source material, the pacing also suffers from it as the book was never a character driven book and focused more on the science, concept, ideology and social commentary, resulted a very slow-paced story, and when it transformed into visual form it could feel a bit dragged out, if you thought the Netflix version is slow, the Chinese version is even slower, and it has 30 episodes. But one thing the Chinese series did better than the book is the characters, they're much more 3 dimensional and fleshed out, this version of Ye Wenjie is a much more sympathetic character than in the book, and the two main leads has some of the best chemistry on screen I've ever seen, kinda like Kirk and Spock or Sherlock and Watson. They also successfully recreated the existential dread you'll get when reading the books, meanwhile the Netflix show is more human drama driven. As a fan of the books, I'm much prefer the Chinese version, however I wouldn't recommend it to everyone, the Netflix version tho much shallower than the books, is a good introduction of the IP to a new crowd, and maybe after viewing that version if they're interested they could watch the Chinese version.

Yay!! I loved the book. I think the series did okay. It hit the premise well. A lot is super hard to explain because of the physics, but they did a good job. I liked the cast too.

You have no idea the first season is mostly just set up like the first book. They did bring a few characters in early from the second and third book probably so they don't havr to keep doing flashbacks in the next season. The next part of the series and the books is bonkers and in my opinion is way better than the first book

Yet to see this (I don't have Netflix), but yeah, you are right, the original is Chinese and the source material is Chinese. Their version was pretty hot over there with my Chinese friends, and our version was slated by them.

For me, I thought episodes 1 and 2 were the most interesting. While the story itself was intriguing overall, the execution felt increasingly sloppy and lazy as the season progressed.
