A hopeful tale in a hopeless place - what a fantastic description. I saw this today, a dementia-friendly showing at a local art house theatre .... Was a subtitled version and the lights were not fully dimmed, and towards the end, I felt like I hadn't connected with the film (a hopeless place perhaps), but then in the last scene, I found myself tearing up, so it was obviously a hopeful tale.

Yay!! I loved the book. I think the series did okay. It hit the premise well. A lot is super hard to explain because of the physics, but they did a good job. I liked the cast too.

You have no idea the first season is mostly just set up like the first book. They did bring a few characters in early from the second and third book probably so they don't havr to keep doing flashbacks in the next season. The next part of the series and the books is bonkers and in my opinion is way better than the first book

Yet to see this (I don't have Netflix), but yeah, you are right, the original is Chinese and the source material is Chinese. Their version was pretty hot over there with my Chinese friends, and our version was slated by them.

I read the Wiki synopsis, which of course gave away the entire plot. It sounds a bit too girly. The device of using an older version of a character counselling a younger self is weirdly reminiscent of the Alec Baldwin / Jesse Eisenberg relationship in To Rome With Love, although their connection is more mysterious.

You can pick apart any movie when you judge it the way YOU, think it should flow. I loved it ; the time went quickly. Overall, it was about addiction, beauty in this case. that's why the repeated sticking of the needle grossness; (it could be one of many substances). With the many reviews & comments I read , nobody mentioned the "Substance" material itself; As I do all my own autowork,, the color/hue of the "substance "is exactley that of PRESTONE ANTIFREEZE.. There again , no visual is wasted in this film. The visuals/story/performances being intesified by the soundtrack & conflict of the self-hate/love is what gives this film its emotional punch, even with the over-the-top-in-your face style of the film. BUT THAT'S THE POINT OF THE FILM. No subtlety, sledge hammer bluntness - you won't miss the messaging. 10/10

On the idea that the character acted too irrationally with the rules, as I was watching, especially after the first 30 min, I really thought the main theme was about drug addiction. From that perspective it makes total sense that she would act irrationally and sabotage her older self so badly. The idea of "balance" kept coming up and it reminded me of the balancing act of maintaining a drug addiction along with normal life, which can also feel like you're two separate people, although just like the movie, the balance is practically impossible to maintain and the damage still affects the sober "self" because you are one. I mostly hear people discussing self-image / aging / hollywood / etc which are definitely also major themes, but if you think of Sue's young and exciting life as an addictive drug, the irrationality of it all makes a lot more sense I think, because people really do give in to the thing that will make them feel better in the moment and end up paying the price, it’s an inherently irrational thing.

After watching a review with someone so easily dismissing this movie. What a breath of fresh air! This is how reviews are supposed to be! Because while it might not be for everybody. Pretending this movie doesn't have any substance beyond religious and political viewpoints is actually crazy. You could take things away from this movie that have nothing to do with hot topics. It is just a very deep.. complex film that is wrapped into a very fascinating story that was hard for me NOT to be engaged. Filled with self reflection and very deep thought.

Obviously a measure of "hotness" is subjective, though I do agree she looks better than many younger women. But no. I was into it for the first half but then the storytelling went off the rails - too much for me to appreciate the product as a whole.

The more I think about it, and after watching your review, the more I appreciate the range of themes introduced ... and then I feel a little more underwhelmed by it's ending. Something more definitive would have worked better for me. I thought the two young boys were very good here, and loved the sound too. Really worked in my viewing. Prob won't revisit this one tho

Yeah to long, didn't like the "comedy" could have been great if it had kept a serious tone throughout. It felt like the third act was an apology for the serious overtones and hideous fight between her old and younger selves. But it was inventive and certainly will get a sequel if not a whole,"Substance" universe constructed around it. Oh that black dragon robe was fabulous.

The Substance was pretty good, but contains a lot of self-absorbed female centric musings, bordering on feminist butthurt whining. People want to see the young and attractive, it's biology. The 'man bad' caricatures were mildly exasperating. Older and unattractive men with brains and money are going to be pulling the strings. If you have ever been in business where sales or convincing somebody is part of the process, you will eventually feel like everybody is using everybody. If you are lucky enough to own a business where you can choose your customers or you can afford to take it or leave it attitude, then your life is going to be better. You can make your own documentary with an iPhone 4 and win the Oscar if your idea is good enough, as we saw in the movie Searching for Sugar Man. But since 99% of everything that has ever been created or invented has been done by a man, guess who's going to have the inspiration and capability to do something novel.

When white racism is justified, it kinda deflates the whole “ anti racism “ activism for me. It’s conditioning and an immediate support system for the lazy. Lawsuits are the PC’s great super power so fear is imposed, just like not criticizing radical religious sects that butcher innocent people because their God demands it. It’s becoming increasingly troubling what is happening in society as a whole because of it.
