How would you know if your mule was deaf?

If it doesn’t listen to your commands and you suspect it then creep up behind it and loudly clap your hands or suchlike. If there’s no reaction then it’s quite likely deaf. That does risk a kick in the head if you’re wrong, though.

@@johnp515 Isn't a mule likely to kick you in the head anyway? My grandfather trained to be a mule farrier in 1918 (how else would the Great War be won?) and had a poor view of all equids thereafter. Especially mules. My other grandfather was the opposite, farming with big horses long after all his neighbours had bought tractors.
