The Chris Poland solo in the song “tears in a vial” from Megadeth’s system has failed, is easily the best post Marty solo, they are both so unique and equal
@michaelgraham97745 жыл бұрын
I find that Marty and Chris have quite a bit in common despite people having tried to pit them against eachother. They both use very outside the box note choice and utilize very unconventional bending styles. Chris seems to favor fast picked runs when he wants to play fast while Marty uses abnormal sweeping patterns.

I shot that video in the THD booth with Chris (I think it was 2004). I put it on my "blog" and someone stole it and put it on youtube. Pretty surreal to see this video. That was a great weekend at NAMM with Chris. I met Ernie C (Chris played on the Body Count song "Midnight") I met Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Vinnie Paul and Paul Gilbert as well. I have the original on my Hi-8 (?) camera. I should grab an extended version. Great video here. Good things coming soon from Chris.

I asked him about his picking when my band backed him up for a clinic. It's a totally intuitive thing for him, he thought he was using alternate picking, and knew nothing of economy picking (when I pointed out his use of it). Would love for Troy Grady to get him under the microscope, to really figure out his picking habits. Super nice guy.

I was there when this video of Chris was shot. It was in the THD booth at NAMM... like a while ago. More that 10 years... wow. Anyway, it's astonishing to watch him up close. Your lesson is great (as are some others I've seen of yours) but what you're missing on this one and what I think is integral to Chris's style is that these licks are not really legato. He's doing a very light and incredibly efficient bit of sweep picking mixed in with the occasional hammer or pull to keep his picking right. You can see he's got it wired so that it's verrrrrry easy for him. The notes are very clear, perfectly precise and have more attack than if they were as legato as you're showing. You sound great and these are still cool licks, but his picking style is extremely interesting and worthy of analyzing!

I was lucky enough to see Damn the Machine supporting Dream Theater in 1992 over here in the UK (Nottingham Rock City) and despite a slightly dodgy PA mix, he blew my mind. One of my favorite players by far with his sheer speed, merging of tonalities and wonderfully lyrical touch. Thanks for the lesson :)

That's awesome that you got to see them/him live like that. Chris is very much a hidden talent (to most folks) as he remained active all of these years later, but a lot of people don't realize what he did after he played with Megadeth. I think having Mustaine ask him to come back and record 'The System Has Failed' album shows that he knew how great Chris was as a player, but they historically fought and argued about money and contracts/agreements, so I guess that is why he didn't fly very far playing with Mustaine & Co. I think his music and playing speak for themselves and Mustaine would be lucky to ever play with him again. Thanks for watching and ROCK ON\m/ Cheers!

This video is gold as a Chris Poland fan, thank you for taking the time to make it! I only think one note might be different. I slowed down the video, and kinda paused frame by frame and I’m pretty sure he’s hitting the 6th front on the G instead of 7th on the last bluesy lick. So it makes a minor triad. Right after the 8-5 pull offs on the B string

Great to do some tutes on what Chris does. Ive never heard of him until last week when I saw him demoing on a Yamaha SG. Even though I met Megadeth years ago. But I knew immediately he had john McLaughlin Mahavishnu Jan hammer and jeff Beck influences. He then went on to explain his bends were very influenced by all of them. Jan hammer on keyboards especially. He’s my new favorite guitarist...thnx for the tutes. He uses harmonic minor and Indian pentatonic (Mixolydian pent). The root to 9,b3,3,4 riff is very Jan hammer in mahavishnu or mid 70s style on Moog!

Precision bend sounds better. I usually refer to it as micro-bends, because some of them are very slight, but as you stated they are precise. I wish Chris would do instructional videos, like Friedman & other guitarists do. But, maybe he intentionally doesn’t so that fewer people will copy his style. By the way, you gave the best breakdown of Poland riffs that I’ve seen. Most people focus on one or two of the most common licks. You picked out some lesser known phrasings.

@LateNightLessons5 жыл бұрын
Hey! I think when Chris played that lick he was picking it more than I did, and I typically use a lot of legato and seem to sneak it in even when I don't mean to. Some players pick every note while other players slur everything with legato, but I tend to steer somewhere in the middle of those two worlds, and usually blend picked runs with legato runs. Try a little of both and see which sounds/feels more comfortable to you. Thanks for watching and rock!

Chris Poland is one of those kind of bridging guitar players in my head. He has that old school blues rock thing, but he played somewhat classical feeling stuff in metal setting. It was a beautiful mix and his tone and playing style especially underline how cool it is. Like listening to Peace Sells you can really hear a difference with other Megadeth guitarists. And a lot of metal stuff as well, but it fits so sneakily in that it took me ages to realize what was going on. It's really hard to put any labels on him or his style. You kinda just recognize him being different from all the others.
