The shortened grip frame actually happened in 1966, with the second series. They made it so all 3 basic models - DS, Cobra, and Agent were made with the same length of frame, and DS/Cobra simply used oversized grips that wrapper around the bottom to keep the original grip length, but also allow using shorter grips if you so chose, to have a more concealable gun.

they remade the snake guns with some questionable aesthetic designs probably to differentiate but man I hope they remake the detective specials.

They already have. The new 38 Colt Cobra. The old Colt Cobra and Detective Special were identical except the Cobra had an alloy frame. So the new Cobra is really closer to being a copy of the Detective Special than the old Cobra.

Those grips are fake pearl. But they are good enough fakes to make you look closely to tell the difference.

The 3rd model short frame was made to utilize that hand filling grip that also moves the hand lower on the frame and prevents the thumb latch from constantly whacking into the shooter's thumb during fast shooting. HTH.

I was always more of a smith and wesson revolver fan. But I would love to have those too. The python was always especially good but the trigger was never as good as a smith and wesson. Colt made that small frame 357 magnum short barreled revolver called the lawman that I always kind of wanted. What was that other snubbie colt made? Commando or cobra. I cant remember. I wish that i owned them all

Colt made a lot of different snub revolvers over the years. Lawman, Cobra, Agent, Banker`s Special, Detective Special, Commando, Courier, Python, Diamondback. I think there were snub versions of the New Pocket 32, 32 New Police, and the short frame Police Positive. Maybe even a snub version of the Official Police. I have one of the Lawman Mk III revolvers, but it is the 4 inch version instead of the 2 inch.
