I have just brought my first three maples thanks to you're channel. It gave me the confidence to give it a go. My partner passed away one and a half years ago and we have four children under 10 and gardening has been the outlet I have used to cope with my loss. Thank you again for all you do with this channel and take care my friend.

Something to also keep in mind. As the the container begins to fill up with roots. You will have less and less room for water. They will probably need to be watered a little more often than you think. The container will become full of more roots than potting soil. When that happens it can't hold on to as much water than normal.

Great video. One thing I think is important to understand is that pots will get hot if sun is on them. Also, when in pots and on cement or gravel, they can bake. I make my own pot shades, and I never put pots on cement, gravel, or hardscapes unless it is 100% shaded. I would advise anyone putting these trees in pots to spend time throughout their day, every day, feeling the outside of each and every pot. Also, I use a slow release fertilizer but I put it in empty tea bags so I have 100% control of when they get it and when they don't. When I take the tea bags out in early summer, there is no residual fertilizer left for them to feed on. Also, slow release fertilizers tend to take 3-4 weeks to kick in at the beginning of Spring so I use a liquid fertilizer to get them started after winter.

Thanks for your video and infos! My maple issues are currently still cold temps and too wet soil. I know the drainage in my pots is good but I think I should not repot in fall anymore. My repotted trees still do not push out much. Maybe also the rhododendron soil I used is too acidic. But I also don't dare to change the soil again now.
@MapleNutz
@MapleNutz Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing you experience. Repotting during Winter is best in my opinion. If you get tons of snow you need to watch for snow mold, it’s very common on lawns but I’m sure it would be a problem with small trees as well. Trees on pot doesn’t grow as much as trees in the soil but that due to microbiology. You can’t mimic the same microbiology in the soil on a pot, it will never be the same.

My goodness! That is a spectacular collection. Did you collect all of them in one year? It seems this sunlight situation came on suddenly, so I assume this is the first year with them. I just started getting interested in maples due to my new found love for bonsai. My most special tree is the one I received from my father the year he passed, so, It's a physical reminder of him. It was the last thing he gave to me when I moved to my current house. The tree was only a volunteer plant that he ripped out of his neighbors gravel driveway. I smile every time I think of how it came to me... ripped out from by the roots and gifted in a plastic grocery bag. But it's the most beautiful tree today.

Yes, that is correct, however I have white rocks which reflects more heat, concrete which also doesn’t hurt and my windows which reflects the sunlight. The reflection of the sun by a window is hotter than the actual sun. (120-140 degrees F).

Pots/containers dry out quicker because of wind evaporation. I watch mine carefully and it takes several hours to do the rounds to water my collection. As for fertiliser, I use 40ml of Tomorite (Tomato feed) or 40ml of Liquid Seaweed in a 9.5ltr watering can. I seem to be doing ok, so far….

You are very correct, when you are over watering they start turning black at the base of the tree but unfortunately once you start seeing the black, it’s already lat for that tree. Before it starts turning black the leafs will dry out and most people will apply more water to them.

In regards to your grow medium, how do you get your ph dialed in?
@MapleNutz
@MapleNutz Жыл бұрын
Don’t worry too much about getting the ph right. Japanese Maples strive in acidic soil and the soil mix I use is very organic. Which will be towards the acidic side. If you still worry about the PH, make sure your PH lvl is at 5.0-5.5 and if for some reason your ph lvl is above 7.0 you might need to apply a bit of sulfur for lawns and keep en eye on it or replace the soil with a mix of pine bark mulch, peat moss and perlite and you will be fine with both methods. I hope you understand and if not please join the fb group (Maple Nutz) and get in touch with me and I’ll be happy to help you my Maple Nutz friend.
