I just stumbled upon your channel and after a few years watching simracing content I can't believe I have missed out on this. Physics and racing go hand with hand and there's no better argument to back up your points.

Can you comment on turning in an Oval race? I have trouble when I need to brake on a corner to much

Hey thanks for the question. I think I need a bit more info on what the problem is. I also get the feeling that this won't be a one-line question and answer, so I think it would be a great idea to post that on my discord's "Ask a Question" section and I we can have a discussion about it. (discord.com/channels/1005521710067503134/1122308306069901444).

I think generally speaking, late apexes are useful in slow corners, especially slow corners before a long straight because you can get on throttle sooner and carry that extra speed all the way through the long straight. In a fast corner, a late apex might not be the best because you don't have as much potential to accelerate. Same with corners that come before a corner. I think in those cases, it's important to keep the momentum and place your car at the outside before the last corner before a straight to maximize exit speed and carry that speed through the straight.
@LastTenth
@LastTenth Жыл бұрын
It's because in a slow corner, lower gears are used which greatly decreases the grip-to-power ratio. Regardless, to maximize grip utilization, the min speed needs to occur at min radius (in a vanilla corner), which will determine when the driver needs to get on the throttle.

Amazing explanations, but somehow I cannot translate all this knowledge into practical actions I can take. It seems like "I need to do everything right, and then I will be faster"
@LastTenth
@LastTenth 9 ай бұрын
You don't have to do everything right before you get faster. Each little bit that you do right will help you improve your time. You just got to to break it down in to bite sized techniques and exercises and work on them one at a time. I've coached many drivers that way.

Nik! It is wonderful to see ideas we talk about in our coaching becoming new content for your channel. I've been thinking about a=(v^2)/r a lot this past week. This kind of critical thinking about my driving line is so much more helpful than turn here, apex here. Being able to tie together my engineering studies and the feeling of driving a car to the limit is something very special to me. The improving results I am experiencing are sure a nice bonus too.

Glad it helped! You picked it up very quickly! What I like the best about it is that anybody can understand it, and it paves the way to take the guess work out of changing the line.

@@LastTenthwatching your videos made me have a more critical approach to my racing practice and now I have a fundamental question. When trying to approach a corner in a faster way is it better to brake later or brake earlier but not as hard? Whichever the case I assume it'll depend on how tight/fast the corner is...but what does physics say about the rule of thumb to know what's best?
@LastTenth
@LastTenth Жыл бұрын
@@rialfe7514 By default, the braking should be the latest point that gets you to the speed you need at turn in. I know that's vague, but when optimizing a corner, it's done backwards, so we should know what entry speed we want already. If we want to deviate earlier/later from that, we need good reason too. In a hotlap situation, there's no reason to brake later (off the top of my head). There are some situations where we'd want to brake earlier. For example, if the amount of deceleration is very small, and if we brake as late as possible with a lot of brake force, it will cause us to jab at the brake pedal, which is obviously not good for turn in. So in those situations we'll need to trade a bit of braking for balance. If we're not in a hot lap, then there could be many reasons such as attacking/defending, following, tire preservation, fuel saving, etc.

here's a weird thought. to win in racing, you have to race the least, kinda like in golf
@LastTenth
@LastTenth Жыл бұрын
It's kinda true. We have to prudently pick which times we race people. I always tell drivers I work with, the wheel-to-wheel racing part is only a very, very small fraction of their race. They are better of focusing on other low hanging fruit.

What are the techniques used to know if the car is at the grip limit? Mentioned around 9:06 AH, looks like it's covered in the FUJI video
@LastTenth
@LastTenth 2 ай бұрын
I teach my students a technique I call grip test.The jist of it is to apply a stimulus to the car and see how it responds. Based on the response, you will know if you are under or above the car's grip 'limit'. Being such a fundamental skill, it's one of the things we work on quite early on. I'll try to make a video on it in the future. It makes more sense when explained with some theory and practice.

But when racing there’s always other cars around so you rarely get to use the perfect line
@LastTenth
@LastTenth 2 ай бұрын
I've been in single class 60 minute races with 30-40 car grids where I podiumed without racing anyone (compromise my line) the entire race, outside of the race start. In single class races, I would say racing happens a very small fraction of the time. Regardless, the point isn't so much about running the "perfect line", it's more about applying these principles to minimize lap times

Track limit on my track is the white line.
@LastTenth
@LastTenth 4 ай бұрын
I don't know which track that is, but unless it's some written track rule, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that's unlikely.
@CurboroughSprinter
@CurboroughSprinter 4 ай бұрын
@@LastTenth yeah it’s in the regs. Unless we misunderstand each other, I think you’ll find it’s also the rule in F1. If all four wheels are over the white line the lap time is deleted.
@LastTenth
@LastTenth 4 ай бұрын
@@CurboroughSprinter Then based on what you're saying (I presume "over" meaning 'beyond', not 'on top'), the track limit is the outside edge of the white line, not the white line itself. That's why I said in the video a white line is, at best, imprecise.
@CurboroughSprinter
@CurboroughSprinter 4 ай бұрын
@@LastTenthwell I’d say a white line is more precise than the edge of the asphalt, which may wiggle about depending on how well they made the track. The point is, at 2:14 and 2:19 the car goes all four wheels over the white line so exceeds track limits and the lap would be deleted in real life in most UK racing.
@LastTenth
@LastTenth 4 ай бұрын
@@CurboroughSprinter If the edge of the asphalt is the track limit, then a white line is irrelevant no matter how straight it is. This is why I said, in your case, the track limit is the outside edge of the white line, not the white line itself.
