So well explained that even a total non expert like me can understand. Found that saying: The hooves are the four additional hearts of a horse.

That saying came from the idea that hooves pump blood with every step, but I believe it has been shown that they don't pump any blood at all and just move it around a little bit within the foot and lower leg at most.

That second photo looks like a totally different hoof. This really demonstrates the importance of regular trimming. That horse must feel so much more comfortable now.

The gelding we started to care for roundabout two years ago had cracks on both front hooves more than 1cm wide up to the middle, maybe almost 2cm at the bottom, the crack thinning to a line but reaching the coronet band. With help of your hoofcare course i 've been trimming them myself now for a year, the hooves have grown down nicely and the walls are almost straight, the crack has healed but there still is a visible line like a thread going from the bottom upwards where the crack was before. For some time the line only reached halfway up (after the crack had grown down), but over the dry summer this thin line reached the top again. I think the line represents the huge damage the hooves had inside, probably just needs more time, would you agree? I'm usually trimming a little once a week to keep the walls from flaring again, i hope another year and the line will be gone too :) Thanks for explaining!
