Here in Denmark, almost every dog owner uses harness! I've never used it. Now I have a small dog, and I get bad meanings about how bad it is for the dogs neck, if I use a leash on its collar. What is your opinion about that for small dog?? (2-4 kg)

After training my dog with just reward and never any consequences for bad behaviour I obtained zero results in solving his reactivity issues. I discovered your videos, and it has changed my dog 100%. The trainers I had advocated only positive reinforcement , so much wasted time and frustration since the classes dragged on with no improvement. Thank you so much, every video you post gives me more understanding and tools to help me help my dog.

you need a good mixture of both positive and negative reinforcement to effectively train a dog. when most hear negative reinforcement or punishment they think of something abusive when all it means is the dog is receiving an equal yet opposite reaction to whatever they did. not many people see that when they do things like pull their dog away from something they want they are using negative reinforcement but in a positive way since it doesnt involve things like hitting your dog or doing something to scare the dog.

Thank you for this video ❤ I have a 3yr GSD that’s dog reactive and overall anxious. I’ve been watching all of your videos for years and it’s made a HUGE difference!!! Understanding my dog’s psychology and realizing that I’m the problem due to lack of leadership and weak obedience made me focus on training. I live in the city surrounded by dogs and I used to only walk her at 5am to avoid dogs. But now I’m more comfortable with taking her out in the afternoon (prime time for dogs) now she’s happier and less stressed. When I’m calm, my dog is calm. Thank you sooooo much for all that you do Tom ❤❤ you saved my dog.

I'd always thought of myself as a pretty instinctual and calm dog handler but this year I found myself in unknown territory when I adopted a freaking awesome dog that turned out to be kind of reactive to dogs and also to old people. It was really quite scary looking and I was absolutely not prepared for the reactions I encountered . So I went down the rabbithole of youtube training algorythm. Spent god knows how many hours with Tom, Joel, Robert and Gavin... Worked like crazy on my observation and timing, obedience and trust, and more importantly, stalked dog frequented areas and paths almost to the point of being weird. I live in the country so there are no dogs around. I literally would drive 30 min to the city daily, seek out the heaviest traffic dog trails, roads and neighbourhoods. Lurked in the parking lots of busy dog parks, walked along outside the perimeter fences. I wanted to expose her to as many dogs as possible in as controlled a situation as possible so as to be prepared for any scenario. I would make conversation with elderly people and build greetings, anything I could think of to stretch her boundaries and make her safe for everybody. It was truly awesome. We worked our butts off for months and I discovered so much! And it all started with Upstate Canine Training Academy. Thank you Tom!

Omg...the old people thing is so wild. Like, I knew my pup would have some trouble learning to be sociable around kids, but she's terrified of older folks, especially those with canes and walkers. She was so reactive towards one of my neighbors who walked by carrying his cane, she pulled me to the ground 😮😢. I had to work on conditioning her to walking sticks and crutches also.

I have been paying attention alot to force free recently because I think dog trainning should be as force free as possible. After you watch enough its easy to get into their line of thinking, especially when you see trainers who use corrections that are way too strong or done at a bad time. This video there kinda brought me back to earth and reminded me that corrections are not evil. It reminded of a biting teddy i worked with once and the second I gave it a correction it looked at me in shock but then there was an immediate decrease in her defensive aggression. Thank you

It was extremely well made, logical, and not polarizing or preachy. You have helped me so much - the trainer who has advice I can use for all of my very different dogs. One size/approach/tool does not fit all! Kudos to the skill and craftsmanship you bring. Ego is a HUGE part of it - my own included. I have 50 years working with dogs and because of the types of dogs I’ve had I didn’t know what I didn’t know until I met my GSD cross rescue last year. After 4 months of trying to control my Padderdale Terrier (big prey drive), THIS video is my game changer. I've been binge watching all sorts of dog training and trying some of each. The fad now is to 'make them feel good' and 'shaping behavior'. I'm sure it works for some dogs. She came with a harness (we call it 'the vest') because she would slip out of a flat collar in less than 5 seconds. I've had dogs, but always easy to train. Your suggestions of equipment says 'no harness'. Ditched it immediately and went back to a choke chain I used on other dogs - before it was 'uncool'. She actually prefers this and we are both having more fun and doing more training sessions. She already knows the basics, but now is listening to me. What a relief. My prong collar is coming tomorrow. Thanks!!!

The last part about egos in dog training industry really hit home for me. I have a very dog reactive GSD x Malinois. Having trained with 2 different trainers with completely different techniques (old school corrections based, purely reward based), neither of them referred me to a colleague/other trainer when I didn't see long lasting results. I spent 4 months working with the first trainer and 6 months with the second one, with little to no results. The first trainer kept making it out like we were getting somewhere (which we weren't) but at the same time telling me my dog was one of the most difficult dogs he's ever worked with (which isn't true). When we hit a wall with the second trainer, she told me my dog's reactivity was probably medical and to put her on anti anxiety meds. Neither of them acknowledged that maybe they just didn't have the skill set to help my dog. I'm currently back to square one and trying to find a trainer that is competent enough.

@altgrete I've got a reactive rescue and the only advice I can give through experience is to start from scratch. Observe your dogs behaviour and find out why he or she is reacting to their environment and then start to rebuild your relationship with your dog. I figured out my dog gets overwhelmed when things are busy (much like me in crowded places) so I've started taking him to a secure dog field. I'm hoping to get him to a stage where he can be introduced to my daughter's dog and then slowly introduce him to the rest of the outside world. I know this probably comes a little late. I hope you've managed to find a solution 😊

The best advice I can give to anyone thinking about training their dog is to learn about stress signs in dogs. It will help you immensely if you want to train humanely. Avoid stress as much as possible and you will slowly rewire your dog's brain to be less stressed. It has worked for my dog and so many others.
@JeremyMcMillan9 ай бұрын
All the "leadership, structure, boundaries, and discipline" is imperative for the human/owner/trainer, but what the dog has when those are provided is "feeling secure." This speaks to the benevolent but misplaced compassion people have when they project humanness on their dogs. It's "code switching" skill that develops the relationship. The more it works, the more the dog will lean into it.

I have seen the demeanour of a dog that is secure (robotic). As opposed to a dog that has been taught to make the correct choices without force. It’s night and day difference.

Trying to fix my fosters reactivity caused by the last owner. Thankfully, I have a great trainer and am working her daily. When I first saw her, she was at the end of her leash, barking, snapping, ready to kill me. An hour later, we were out on a calm walk. We went back to square 1 training and its been months of back and forth, and finally I think we are truly ready to venture out on mini training walks again with a muzzle (I have a self propelled treadmill for her and we play outside, so she's getting tons of physical and mental stimulation). She's improving little by little. I watch these videos to better myself and learn to train dogs. My foster has opened up a can of delicious worms of my interest in training reactive and aggressive working breeds. As exhausting as it can be, I absolutely am loving it. Seeing my foster improve so much is highly rewarding and I want to help other dogs like her improve too, so they don't end up in a kennel or worse, euthanised.

I have a reactive dog on a harness and it works. Slip lead, martingale, head Halter all caused more stress and more reactions. She walks perfectly on a harness and her reactivity improved a ton by using a harness. I noticed an immediate difference once the harness was put on. She was able to smell things, she was able to do different things that these other tools prevented. She is happy and thriving on her harness. My dog is more confident then she has ever been.

The owners body language is so important! I have a reactive dog that used to lounge at strangers. The i watched my mom walk him, and saw the very short leash, aswell as her "bending over" to "be ready" for the lounge. My dog noticed and imedietly went on reactive mode, getting ready to jump. I noticed i did the exact same thing as my mom. Next walk, leash longer (but still safe) walking upright, looking straight past the person coming towards us. My dog did absolutely nothing! He was still unsure of course, but that was where our change began. Now he can be offleash, with people, bikes etc. Walking around no problem!

The vibrate on the e collar has been the only thing to help my GSD with reactivity. The Herm Sprenger is great for sub threshold interactions and training but on my specific dog it can potentially cause redirection. He can now watch deer and dogs without flipping out but I still don't particularly like the way he looks at them. I'll take the win where I can get them though. He now has the choice to behave or go into a tantrum and he's making the right choices.

I've only had my dog for about 3 weeks, was a seized shelter dog, abandament issues. Gets along GREAT with other dogs at the dog park, he is well trained, knows sit, Lie down, paw, and learning heal. He gets super excited to see another dog, then he gets frustrated and lunges at anything around him. I am trying to learn how to turn this around and these are great tips. I know our relationship is not strong, he's new to the home, new to the family, new to the area. Its all new to him. I am not sure how long it takes to really build a relationship with a new dog, this is our first dog. But it is super good to know that a harness is not good, that is what I have been using, afraid he will break free from his collar. I am waiting on a prong collar to arrive, and I do have already an alternative collar. I will make the switch and see how it helps.

Our Labrador was a super reactive dog. Partly because of all of my family being overwhelmed with him (he's an ADHD type 😅) and partly because our older dog was super sensitive and easily startled so Konrad tried to defend him from almost everything we came across. I knew from horse training how crucial it is to keep calm in all situations that can potentially get out of control, but I'm also a 58kg woman trying to hold a 30kg furious dog. I can't hold my dog and keep a calm body language at once. So I resorted to tying the leash onto a tree whenever another dog crossed our way and let the tree handle the outbreak. A tree doesn't show any reaction and I could stay beside it, calmly watching. It took about two weeks for Konrad stopping jumping into the leash. From that point on I could handle situations without relying on trees or inanimate objects for help. And just being able to calmly focus on the situation at hand massively improved Konrads behavior. He's twelve now and for two years he's the only dog in our household and he never fully stopped being reactive. But now he can be handled by pretty much everyone. Sometimes he storms forward, barking and growling, but then stops, turns and looks at me. And then we can go on. Not necessarily as calm as I want, but given that he twisted my ankle twice and almost broke my arm, I'm content with how it is now. We came a long way and I can confidently say that other dogs aren't a problem anymore. Now we work on ignoring cats 😅 Tldr: Body language and you yourself don't getting agitated is probably the most crucial thing. And if you can't keep calm for whatever reason get help from someone who can. Even if it's a tree or a lamp post.

THANK YOU. Tom, your understanding of dogs mental state is spot on. Your training technique/philosophy works. I have noticed a difference in our communication skills. Again, many thanks to you and your team...

Thank you for the video! My puppy only saw someone’s back yard for the first 3 months of his life. We got him with ticks and parasites so so he was quarantined (he was in a puppy corral in our living room or crate at night). Still able to interact with our other puppy and 2 adult dogs. After that time we took him on walks and one evening we passed a house that had a dog bark at us and we stopped. Glad to find that it was behind a gate but that was what changed him. He is super gentle and sweet but he is afraid of people and dogs And is reactive. At .5 months we did 6 weeks of positive training and it did not work. E-collar has helped clean up his heel but reactivity is still there. At 60+ pounds my teenagers can no longer walk him and he is still reactive. We are going to try the prong collar method. He is the sweetest dog at home and he is so gentle that we can not give up on him. I appreciate your dedication to helping puppy/dog owners help understand there are different ways to help their puppy’/dogs ❤

True words at the end! There is so much ego in some "trainers" that my reactive dog hat a big wound on his nose cause the (female) trainer tried for 10! Minutes to get him lay down and stepped on his leash holding him with his head down the (too big) hard wired muzzle on the floor. It was a mess. From that point on he was afraid to wear the muzzle. Before that I've teached him tenderly to wear it without any problem.

Tom, I love this video. Such powerful information. Now if people will listen and watch what you are showing. So they can build or heal their relationship with their dog. It is sad that some do not or have a difficult time with timing. Timing of correction and praise are critical and absolutely needed in training. Keep up your wonderful work. I share your videos and site to my clients. Hearing and watching me is not enough. It's very hard to record our sessions, but watching your videos really makes it clear. Have a wonderful day 🐾🐶🦮🐕

My 90lb dog is a rescue. I trained my Rotty. I know how prong collars work. I can not even put one on this dog. Immediately, he is upset and growling. The only thing he is calm with is a harness. I have worked with him for 5 years. We are now only reactive to head-on experiences. I have him ..hault..sit..watch me..treat. it is working. A regular collar is also a no-go. I appreciate you, and I believe you to be correct. However, maybe not overnight success, but maybe there are exceptions?

I have a dog reactive APBT, so thankyou for this video, from watching this video I have realized it’s partially my fault for making her that way. I will be definitively changing my way of training her

Love your videos. We are trying so hard to help our reactive dog. He barks at everything, inside and outside the house. He just barks and once he starts we cant stop him.

Thank you for mentioning harnesses. Ive attempted more than once to talk about prong vs harness to my dog walking clients (they have a very reactive chocolate lab they rescued -and part of their adoption contract stipulated they are NOT allowed to use the prong collar). This lab has no pause button on his reaction upon seeing dogs walk towards him and will bark and do pirouettes in the air. Its quite sad actually because i know the solution is available, but because of the contract he (and the owners) are not getting the training and support they sorely need. Thank you for all education you give your audience. Its worked well on my own dogs (and me)❤

hey! I have a 4 year old vizsla mix. and we live in an apartmen. we take her out everyday for 2 hours(other than her toilet breaks), off leash run and play time included. so she gets her exercise. she is great with dogs and she loves cats too. she is gentle with kids. and she is extremely sweet with us. very well behaved, extremely cuddly, eager to learn. she loves to eat and play which makes it is easier to train her. she is okay with being left alone as well, at least for a few hours. she just sleeps and waits until we come back home and go to the park together. BUT, we have on major issue. she is extremely protective of the apartment. she doesnt like strangers who come near our door or towards us on the street. she would lunge and bark like crazy. as soon as she sniffs them she goes back to her sweet normal self. and on the street it is easier for us to correct her since she is on a leash. but at home she would run to the door like crazy and bark whenever someone passes by our door. we are able to control this when we are home. we send her to her place. she still barks but atleast not right at the door. but when we are not at home she would bark at anything that moves outside our door, guarding constantly. (we know this because she also barks at us when we are on the stairs getting closer to our door). I have no idea how to correct this since we are not next to her. does anyone have a similar problem? and what do you do to overcome this issue?

by the way i just need to add that she is kind of an anxious dog. she is very scared of loud noises. so she is quite allert when it comes to noises. cannot be next to a construction site, gets extremely scared of gun shots or any sound that resembles a gun shot, fireworks are her nightmare. I thought maybe her reaction can be related to her anxiety about sounds. and I tried desensitizing her by playing firework videos and sounds. but of course she always knows that it is not real.

Thanks for the practical lessons and sensible explanations. I've tried out your methods for walking my dog on a loose leash, successfully. It took time... but it's a good bonding experience and keeps my hyperactive Kelpie occupied.

My dog has epilepsy and is less reactive now but always towards the neighbors' dogs in the building . We are at war and her epilepsy began just before the war at age two. She is on medication but is still very protective of me. She behaves well.at the bomb shelter though and accepts other dogs and people there.

Ive watched many videos and the main thing I noticed was that the trainer wasn't really expounding upon the subtleties that you mentioned. I found it very frustrating because I knew what they were focusing on wasnt really the whole of what was producing the result. I feel it is a major barrier to the owners understanding when its not explained to them how much easier life is for everybody when you get the details right. Its why a skilled trainer can handle a dog and he behaves well but when handed off to someone who believes theyre doing the same thing the dog behaves badly. Look closely! The trainer has learned what to watch for in the dogs behavior and how best to communicate with him that is why they can react at the key moment when a dog is shifting. Timing is a big deal, but if you dont understand what to look for your message is convoluted if it gets through at all. I always felt the trainer was keeping their true hand hidden in this way. Anyway, youre the first one Ive come across to even discuss these things in a coherent way rather than just saying there! and talking about the obvious fact the behavior changed (which is probably what they think youre referring to most of the time if youre not asking for feedback). The owner is likely not seeing what the trainer sees when they say there! You also break down the important seconds before a reaction, the dogs body language, and how different reactions affect them mentally which is great.

Dude 😂 you’ve changed mine and my pup’s life. Zeus is a 9mo good boy. He graduated from puppy school at 8mo and I noticed he suddenly became reactive to other dogs. Wants to greet, and will bark and lunge 😵💫 He’s becoming so much better

My mini schnauzer and I have been attacked by another dog last year. He has never been aggressive and loves people and other dogs and now he is becoming aggressive when other dogs get near us and I’m so nervous now. He is 13.5. He is so sweet but now it’s so hard and I’m so worried he is going to get attacked bc he is stressed.
