I've been working with my dog in severe reactivity for quite a while with good success, but there was something missing. This was it. Our first time out incorporating this more intentionally, I watched him wanting to react but making the decision to turn and look at me instead. I have felt like I managed this well up until now, but today was the first time I watched my dog choosing to make better decisions. Thank you.

Love everything about this video. As a fear reactive dog mama I teared up watching. I work with my girl everyday as we walk daily. The struggle gets real if other dogs react…would love to see a video with other dogs going nuts & how to help my girl through those times. Thanks for all the education Tom! You are making a difference and we appreciate you!

I am binge-watching literally every single video Tom has made. I had a 52kg rescue Malamute x GSD for 10 years and he was adorable but really hard work. We got there in the end but watching these videos has taught me how much quicker he could have progressed if I'd realised that it was ME that contributed to his reactivity and how much better I could have been if I'd had Tom's educational videos back then. Sadly we lost our big boy recently at age 12 but we now have a new rescue GSD x Malinois adolescent and I am determined to be the best human/owner I can for this lovely animal who has had such a crappy start to her life. Thank you for your kindness and generosity in sharing your knowledge with us Tom - you are an awe-inspiring person and I am incredibly grateful to you.

I want to rescue a Mal! My first one was the best dog I've ever owned! She was a true sweetheart! ( Her name was Rosie, sadly, passed away way too early,, haven't had the heart to get another dog yet and it's been two years..) I've had several LGD's being on a farm, but my Rosie was the best. I could call her off of a bite in mid- chomp! I was watching the protection dog competitions and even the well-trained police dogs and elite Navy SEAL dogs- they say only 10% can be called off of a bite by vocal command only. And I didn't know that! Good gurl, Rosie - such a good gurl!!

I've been in the proactive mode for a few months now, doing everything that you've showed and using the DDD's. I socialized him early on teaching him to be neutral, went to puppy classes and basic obedience, but my 10 month old Groenendaeler (also a Belgian Shepherd) became slightly reactive during his teenage phase, he started to fixate on dogs (he doesn't bark or lunge, he seems to be very interested in other dogs), is it normal for reactivity to pop up during adolescence and does the 'healing' take longer with an adolescent dog? Should I be worried this might become an issue later on i.e. turning into aggression? He's also in his fear period, the other day a tiny poodle growled at him, my dog was focused on me but he became anxious of the poodle because he didn't understand why the other dog growled at him? @@tomdavisofficial

I can relate to this person. I’ve struggled with this with my GSD. It requires lot of bonding and training but I also keep hearing that the dog needs confidence's. Truthfully, the person needs confidence. The dog can sense that and needs to trust their human has that confidence.

My dog was a bit reactivate after being attacked 3 times on walks , i actually prefer to call it defensive, the way i handle it is I've got a pretty good idea which dogs he will react to so if i feel any sign of stress or agitation i very calmly move him back from the situation i don't move him completely i just move him back i use the words leave it and put myself in front of him , i don't make a big deal out of it i don't introduce treats or toys , i do give very positive verbal praise, it's been over 12 months since I've had any issues because he now knows i will keep him safe , the reason i don't use treats and toys is twofold, other dogs are attracted to both and they are valuable resources, i control the resources so he doesn't need to worry about them .

Thanks this is interesting. I have a pug/french bulldog cross rescue. In the house and garden, he learns things immediately. On the street, he is not interested in treats or me - totally focused on what is around. Doesn;t help, that he lost an eye as a puppy form a dog bite (don;t know if it was play gone bad, or an attack). In addition, he was a lockdown puppy so not socialised the same way and previous owners never trained on the lead. Think it is going to take some time!!! Am going to get a trainer involved when the weather settles - but all this is very helpful.. prefer this to the guy who used a prong collar and never spoke to the dog!!!

Hi, I have been working with my 18 mo. GSD being neutral when we pass houses that have dogs in their yard barking at us as we pass. She’s been doing good (better, improving!) to the point where she looks at them with her ears up (her curious look), and will walk with me (she does still veer a little in their direction a bit, but our progress is always forward and she’s not lunging or pulling me towards them), and she doesn’t bark at them as we pass - she just seems like she's alert to their presence. She has gotten to the point where she will look at them, then look at me or at something else (where I will then mark and reward her). However, yesterday as we passed a house where I know the little dog is on an electric fence (the owner told me the last time it charged at us), it came charging at us, barking and making a huge fuss, and it was much closer to the road than I thought it should be (not sure if the ‘fence’ goes that close to the shoulder or if it was disabled or not functioning. Don’t worry though, its owner came to the door, called it back with a “treat”.) Anyways, Sascha and I both thought the dog was coming for us, and she reacted (lunged, barked, hackles up - the works). My question: Was I right or wrong in correcting this in this situation? Is the reactivity corrected every time in every circumstance, or when we both seriously felt threatened, was it justified and I should have just carried on as neutrally as possible (like no corrections and no reinforcement from me)? Help...feeling confused.

I have a Doberman she is 9 months now I’ve done so much positive reinforcement and socializing with other dogs/ppl. Now that she is getting older she is starting to give signs of becoming reactive to other dogs (shackles raised while walking by) if the other dog barks aggressively she will engage and she has no interest in receiving the positive reinforcement. I want to stop it before it start so any recommendations!!!!

I watch every one of these NBD videos. Lots of good info. Then I look at my 15lb terrier mix and remember I can’t reach down that far to get a good close in heel without instantly getting Charlie horses in my back so I can’t use this this liver treat on my hand method. People say use a stick with food on the end but I’d spend more time reloading it than training. How does Tom do a video like this with a very short dog? Short dogs need training too.

Does joining your 'no bad dogs club' at the all-access level include your courses like 'reactive to neutral'? Is there a membership level that includes all of your courses and breaks down training steps in order (meaning, train this, then this, then this type thing)? We just took in a (now) 11 month old (Samoyed, he's our 3rd of this breed) and some things he's/we've got covered and others we're struggling with. He's wicked smart and a super absorbent sponge right now and we want to get things locked in asap. He was with another family for about 6 months and he was starved for attention (they didn't know how to direct/control his barking and hyper energy so they kept him locked off from the family which just intensified his behavior - we've managed that piece with simply walking him daily and just turning our backs and paying attention to something else when he crazy barks at us - he learned real quick that barking doesn't get him attention - and, he's with us a lot, we don't lock him away from us). He's got sit/down/up/off/place covered (and he's came kennel trained). We're working on stay, leave it, quiet, gentle (when taking treats). We need leash & reactive with other people help (it's an attention issue, not an aggressive issue we believe)

How can I help my small fearful dog? He's gained loads of confidence in his 18 months of life and we've progressed from him being afraid of the literal empty space around us and runnig away from everything during his walks to him really enjoying them and having time of his life sniffing away, but now that he's found some courage he's started lunging towards other dogs as soon as he sees them. Immediate sharp pull, like a flash, barks and growls like a little demon to get them out of his sight. He's small so I can't do any of this luring stuff, I would have to be bended over him and he hates it. So does my back lol.

I have a reactive GSD, I think my problem is that I can't recognize her body language well enough to determine when to reward vs correct. Because when I see her staring for too long, I'll give her a quick pop on her prong. Watching Tom here, he didn't really correct her even when Monkey was staring at the other dogs as long as he wasn't reacting. When do we know when to correct vs reward. My GSD doesn't bark at other dogs, but her energy sets off other dogs and they start barking at us. She's gotten off leash twice and attacked another dog that was either staring at us, or walking by our house. So generally I'm pretty strict around keeping her away from other dogs and now allowing her to load, but I wonder if maybe I'm being too strict.

Ok so my problem is i have a short leg cowboy corgi. It seems fairly impossible to do the contact lure while walking etc (too old to walk and bend over at the same time) Anyone have suggestions?
