I mean, our professor is also pretty much a decent social scientist and deeply into the topic including statistics and always working on another paper, but his delivery is not anyhow close to Andy's. Can I use a reversed approach...mean I preset the method that I am familiar with, and carry the RQ, RO and Hypothesis around it.

I would say in theory yes - you just putting a peg of what kind of question you are able to answer. In very banal and simple way, I would say it is like looking in fridge and then deciding what to cook vs. going to shop for ingredients and then cooking. Same activity, but different starting point where first is limited, and second is open to the outcome (I removing time needed and other possible incentives, just looking at raw ingredient). Sorry for banal comparison, just had lunch so I was inspired to write it that way.
