That bit of advice about removing the latent heat from the coolers before adding ice for the trip is just another example of why I am subscribed to your channel Aaron…your attention to detail is impeccable! I can’t wait for the videos of this adventure that will follow…

If allowed to make the analogy, when I was younger I had the opportunity to come across some books written by Mr. Jim Corbett. It was about his experiences as a hunter of man-eating big cats in India and for some strange reason Aaron story narrating reminds me a lot of those books, maybe same personality? Who knows.

I've been to Key West ( Waterman ) l o l , 3 times in my life ! I always wanted to go to the Dry Tortuga's, but never made it there ! That last Hurricane destroyed my sister's condo off of Fort Meyer's ! I caught many a Jack Crevalle's, but never a yellow one ? I would have liked to tasted one before I returned to Illinois ! I like the Gulf waters more than the Atlantic side ! Incredible colors in the waters ! I would have liked to see a CLEAN & COOK on that A.P. ! As a marine Technician, you were correct on the fuel heating up creating a possible Vapor Lock situation ! I was surprised that you used black totes down in Florida where temps exceed 90 degree's !

@keywestwaterman your fuel theory is 100% correct. In aviation, we have vents on our gas tanks in the wings and we typically fill the tanks all the way up the night before. So the gas will cool down and then when the sun comes up the following day on summer days, it is not uncommon to walk outside and just watch gas pouring out of your wing onto the ground.
@KeyWestWaterman
@KeyWestWaterman Жыл бұрын
wild! I've seen the vents do the same on the boat
@bradleysnyder6540
@bradleysnyder6540 7 ай бұрын
I too am a pilot and we plan for this. But if you fill you tanks with cool fuel in the morning and your tanks warm up, like you mentioned, they will vent the excess fuel overboard, you can never get that fuel back and you paid for that wasted fuel, and it’s not good for the water. If your tanks below the waterline on your white boat do not heat up enough that it causes your boat to vent… keep doing what you are doing!

We build fuel tanks for the marine and automotive industry. We have to design the tanks to where the fuel nozzles shut off at 95% to allow for fuel expansion. Our plant is in Florida and you are correct on fuel. You definitely get more when the temperature is cooler.

So there are actually some good reports supporting your theory on fueling times. Also, never run the pump handle wide open. They say that in the heat of the the faster you run the pump, the more it releases the vapor trapped in the tanks. So you are definitely on the right track.

Very good Aaron on the coolers , they do exactly what you said. On the fuel note I did read a few years ago that it is smarter to fuel up in the mornings being that it's cooler. But another note should be that when people in general put the nozzle in the gas tank they usually press the handle for the fuel to come out quicker. That is what burns the fuel down. If you press it si the fuel comes out at a slower pace it also lets you get more fuel for your buck. It's like the harder you step on the gas, the faster that gas gets consumed. Great video brother. I'm gonna check out today's after I'm done with this bad boy.

Great video Aaron! I’m not a petroleum engineer, but as an accountant, I’ve done audits on gas stations and when we counted the gas, we always measured quantity and temperature. That temperature was used to convert the litres to 15 C (roughly 60 F), which is the norm in the gas industry. Supposedly, the gas pump would convert the gas going through it to 15 C when we pump it. In essence, we should always get the same amount per litre/gallon at any point of the day. Obviously, gas pumps go through regular testing here in Canada on predetermined dates, so I’m sure no big oil people would ever tamper with that. Loved the video. Thanks for sharing!!!

As an engineer I can say yes you'll get more fuel into a given space of it's cooler. Racing teams use this concept to pack more fuel before the start of a race {see motogp}. However you'd need to know if the pumps compensate for such a thing, meaning how they measure the volume of fluid getting delivered. So, you'll get more fuel into your fuel tank when it's cooler but I imagine you still pay the same total cost per gallon. Because, loss prevention...
@KeyWestWaterman
@KeyWestWaterman Жыл бұрын
Makes sense! Appreciate the info
@alanmartinez45
@alanmartinez45 Жыл бұрын
The way most pumps compensate for this is double walled underground tanks that barely change in temperature so it doesn't matter, in cases where you may be pumping thousands of gallons like in airplanes or really big boats it does, and the measurements are made by weight and not volume so there is no compensation to do exactly to avoid this, at your normal leisure boat pump the machine measures by volume, so if the gas is heavier you get more, but even then the pump doesn't loose because it compensates with the people who won't or can't fill up in the am(time is limited)...

I’d be bringing a small packable hammock. Especially after hearing you mention those “palm rats”. Also because I find them to be more comfortable.

Lots of rats down there. In the mornings they would run off with anything that they could. Whisks, spoons, coffee cups, spice shakers, etc. Thought I was losing my mind at first.

I loved the Dry Tortugas when I was there a little over 30 years ago. My highschool in Sarasota took us to Ft Myers and we took a boat out there for 4 nights I think. We fished one day and fished and dove from the boat another day. It really was awesome. I caught the biggest fish AND the most of out 25 kids but only wanted the prize for my big mutton snapper. Nobody was surprised, I fished a lot back then. And I just moved to VA Beach so I can do it again. The NC foothills sucked for a Florida man.

Good idea with pre-cooling the coolers, it makes a difference, as does cooling all your drinks in the fridge before putting them in the coolers. Ever tried dry ice to keep your supplemental ice frozen, or to freeze your food and help keep it longer? We use it on our camping trips to extend and preserve food and ice longer, but there’s a process to it for sure.

def helps too! and we haven't gone that far or needed it. this trip we came back with just enough ice. and thats about as long as I think I'd ever camp out there. I bet dry ice helps a ton

Beautiful weather! Looks like a blast! Last time I was there on the ferry over, I saw some decent looking fish in the blue water area but I couldn't tell what they were. Gonna try trolling when I take my boat over next time.

So what I found on the fuel expansion is: 20°C(ca. 40°F) leads to a 2% expansion of gas. So you are right although the difference is very small. And Idk if gas stations do account and correct for that.

Awesome trip! My family and I made that run last July. It was awesome! We try and hit as many national parks as we can. Finally checked that one off the list. It took several trips to the keys to finally get the weather window. Didn't want to do the cattle ferry.
